The 2020 Tata Steel Masters is a 14-player single round-robin taking place from 11-26 January. World Champion Magnus Carlsen again heads the field, which includes Top 10 stars Caruana, Giri and So as well as 5-time World Champion Anand. A lot of the focus will be on young stars - Duda, Artemiev, Xiong and above all 16-year-old Alireza Firouzja, who makes his super-tournament debut. As well as the traditional venue in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, one round will be played in the PSV football stadium in Eindhoven (16 January).
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. If there is a tie for first place the top two after tiebreaks then play a 2-game blitz (5+3) playoff and, if still tied, an Armageddon game. The monetary prizes will be shared evenly. Holy crap. Carlsen, Caruana, and then Anand. That's an insane back-to-back-to-back matchup for the 16-year-old. I'm so impressed with Firouzja. Any way these games turned out, he held his own and proved that he deserved to be in the field. He has an amazing future ahead.

Perhaps when Alireza is at his best state of mind, he can be quite a challenge. However nothing is enough against these legends, vishy proves his might yet again and Alireza tried his best. Great game!!!

@@pattabiramans Alireza is still 18 years old and still has several years to go and so is not yet at his best. However, the Iranian super GM is already over 2700 ELO which was a dream ELO for Anand and similar GMs (except for Kasparov, Carlsen, Karpov, Tal and Fischer) when he was 18 years old. Anand did not enter his prime until he was around 25; by the time Alireza is 20 he’ll be over 2800 beating all of these defunct GMs like a breeeze.

@@kevinwellwrought2024 You must consider that when Anand started there were not so much resources available in terms of coaching, engines and other assistance available as of today. In that respect you can't compare them.

@@pattabiramans That is wrong, Anand had full access to computer engine, Informant, chessbase data and many other computer programmes. Anand is still India’s best chess player but given the fact that India’s population is over 1.2 billion it is a disgrace to produce only one chess champ. Iran with only 80 million people is doing much better and even Norway with such a low population had produced Magnus.

@@kevinwellwrought2024 You live with your prejudice and bias, that won't change the fact. India has 64 GMs as of date and it's ranked 4th in Chess Federation list. Now this is not an opinion, it's just the fact.

@alcogm its ok to be frustrated but to be honest in 20 years of chess I have never seen a chess player whine in front of everyone like that. Him being 16 years old is a bad argument. I have seen thousands of young boys like him compete over the past 2 decades and everybody takes their loss with respect.

I think saying new game as a move 11 it's not enough..maybe the position after move 45 has been occurred before..I'm not saying check all the positions but it will be very interesting if you check some special positions where players are in a critical decision

I keep hearing the phrase "time control" does it mean that you will not lose automatically if you're timer runs out after you make a certain amount of moves..in this case 40 moves...to speed up the games and so people will be encouraged to play chess instead of playing in ways so your opponent runs out of time...essentially playing beat the clock and not chess...any help would be appreciated...
