Anand once explained in an interview that the reason for his deep thinking was infact that Smirin had chosen this very unusual line, and since Smirin needed a win Anand was worried that this could have been some sort of home preparation. So he tried to remeber if there was any new theory about some Kind of opening traps in this system and in addition tried to chose they best line to play to avoid getting into this uncomfortable territory. So basically in those 2 minutes Anand was just struggling to find the right toy he wanted to play with

He was trying to remember if he left the stove on. This led to a train of thought of whether his house was on fire, and if it was how many valuables would be lost. He in turn thought of the things in his house which he valued the most. Finally,he realized that life is ultimately meaningless, therefore nothing is of value. Then he decided he should probably just get the match done.

Couple of common theories: 1. He saw a mate in 48 and waited for 100seconds so that his opponent gets some time to think and resign. 2. He was trying to predict world war 3 in that time. 3. He wanted to avoid the number casualties on the chess board. 4. Some say he was thinking if it would be better use Houdini, Stockfish or Rybka fitted in his mind for the rest of the game. 5. Some say he even predicted death in that time.

Anand was asked about this in the interview after. Smirin did not play the opening Anand was expecting. In a finale like this, White must win and so will play something dangerous to avoid Black forcing a simple draw. When Anand saw that Smirin was deviating from his usual opening, he says that he stopped to think what players and tournaments Smirin had been in recently. He was trying to figure out if there was some new trap or opening that had been developed recently using that move. Once he had an idea what Smirin was going for (which could have been ten moves out), he decided what opening he would play to avoid that line. The plan worked. Anand was able to prevent Smirin from getting any momentum in his attack. He sacrificed a piece to try to get a clear path for his center pawns (to try to queen one of them), but Anand was able to trade away enough pieces that Smirin couldn't keep the position active enough to win.

Your theory at the end reminded me of something I recently did in a tournament. We each had an hour for our moves, after which we would continue the game with a 5 minute clock. At the beginning of the game, I stared at the board for about a minute before moving Nf3 (I was white). It developed into a Queen's gambit declined, which I won. :)

Anand in his book ‘Mind Master’ pg.61 mentions that “Smirin had captured a pawn out of sequence, which had thrown me off.” And that “...My decision to pause and consider had paid off - I’d gone from spending 1.43 minutes on one move to using up only two minutes on the last 46 moves and rode right into a win. It’s a lesson that almost runs as a leitmotif through my career. It’s not the worst idea to take a two-minute pause and get clarity. At the board, I use the time as I see fit.”

The real game was played much faster. I mean faster than he was pushing buttons in this analysis. That shows anand's ability to Spontaneously make proper decisions as he was down on time at the end.

can u please make us see the anand vs karpov 1998 match where anand discovered two way check against the two passed pawns . That game was something . Anand really made this game from near to loss to a victory.

Anand did lose a game as Black in the Petroff in 6 moves against Zapata in Biel 1988 so it's possible he had memories of that loss and wanted to be careful about another early loss in the Petroff. Just a thought.

I think I watched this once... I remember coming away with the impression that he just didn't realize it was his turn. Though it seems unlikely on the GM level, it's certainly within the realm of possibility.

3:33 - instead of dxe5, what about Qe6+? After Kh8, Qxe5, clearing the middle and keeping the pawn structure. If Nxe3*, fxe3 and white has 3 connected passed pawns in the center for the bishop, though they may be hard to defend down the piece (though he's down the piece anyway at that point). * Black still has attacks to be considered here too, including Bxg2 instead of Nxe3.
