The Cardiff Canton just passed us while we were walking the dog on the beach, Nth Wales. Could tell it wasn't the usual engine passing just from the sound. I'm not a train buff, but even I enjoyed seeing it pass 😊

Its the firing order that make these sound like they do.V12,s or V16,s firing two pots at a time running down the crank.Glorious noise and pigs to start for the same reason.

@@davidvines8141 The idea of two pots firing at the same time increased torque on the crank .A generating set needs alot of torque to produce high voltage.These engines (English Electric) only ran upto 1800 rpm but produced huge torque.A generating set gets much harder to turn as it produces more volts and so forth.The Deltics and their Napier two strokes used two engines to generate that level of torque.The class 37,s were brutal pulling machines.

I believe US diesels have a drain cock on each cylinder so that the accumulated moisture can be blown out of the cylinders before starting the engine . This does not appear to have caught on un the UK.

It may be that we don't have the extremes of heat the US has and the complexity of another of point failure, for an infrequent use item was not worth the risk? I don't recall seeing anything on the Swiss designed Sulzer units either - I could be wrong. That said the US was well on with Boiler Water chemistry for steam trains for years prior to the UK getting involved with it, and the UK had to use a US designed bogie for it's MK1 coaching design.

@paulcatley2224

spectacular and fun to watch but as a diesel mechanic this shows a badly maintained/set up engine, it should fire straight up on all 12 cylinders. they used to leave locos ticking over all night just incase they took too long to start when needed in the morning, wudda been easier and more economical to just fix the issues in the first place, typical br (and british logic on the whole)
