I spent 12 years as a Shunter at Penzance, and can say I have dealt with every Class 50 Loco. I’ve enjoyed my life.

I’ve shunted with a lot of these Locos at Pz when the pilot was in for service. They would regularly travel 1000 miles in 24 hours. Penzance to Paddington, Padd to Swansea, Swansea to Oxford, then to Birmingham, to Padd and back to Pz.

Now i have to admit i am a dyed in the wool steam man but i just loved the 50s have seen them all many times over and would have loved to be in a position to have bought one and if i had AJAX would have still been here today.

If this ain't the sound of music i don't know what is . These lovely engines had the sound and looks of perfection . Thank you excellent video .

The Class 50s ran in pairs on the northern end of the WCML from Crewe. Post electrificaton transferred to the Western lines. Quick acceleration, but aesthetically lacking something at the front, unlike DP2, their prototype.

When first introduced in 1968 it was to finally replace the remaining steam traction on the west coast route north of Crewe and accelerate the speeds north to Glasgow from lower powered diesels,they always worked in pairs for the power needed for that steep route.There was controversy at the time as to why Brush 4s were not used instead as they were proven locos already,personally I got to like them and on the west coast run they could be fast and being double headed sounded good especially on overnight runs.

Happy days on the Southern. :) Oh for a time machine and a few thousand pounds. I'd take a hotel room in Salisbury and spend my days riding behind and photographing these beauties.

Only on weekdays. They didn't appear on Saturdays as we got a slew of Cromptons instead.

Nicknamed the 'Hoover'. We used to get very excited if we saw one of these in York back in the 70's when I was spotting.

I remember them at Manchester too. The last time I saw one of those plates was at Old Oak Common approx 1977. I think it was on 50036. I am sure some of those found themselves in the hands of collectors. I can't say for sure though. Thanks.

I can't remember these in East Anglia (Only 37s maybe the odd 47) but you can't beat the "rasp" of the 50s. Why are they nicknamed "Hoovers"?

What has happened to English Electric, Brush Traction, BRCW, Metro Vic? they made some fabulous Locomotives. I bet somewhere in their epitaph the words margaret, thatcher, ernest, marple and/or conservatives will be found. What this shower have done to our manufacturing base is criminal. What are we doing buying trains from (of all countries) Spain and Italy? Bitter? too bloody right I am.
@wakehurst27 жыл бұрын
gw4pjq I can understand your stance - and I appreciate its 5 years since you made this statement - but the simple truth is we as a country lost this engineering/manufacturing game during the '80's. In terms of locomotive manufacturing the reliability of BR motive power was shocking. At times low 60%. Sadly even the then new 56's proved unreliable - not just the first 30 from Romania but the BREL built batch too. They were uneconomical almost out of the box. It took Foster Yeoman to haul BR into the modern world with its order of 4 - just 4 - Class 59's from the US. This was the start of the revolution that effectively killed our manufacturing. Was it political? Possibly. The main problem for all manufacturing companies in that era was the power of the unions. Our cost base went up and quality went down. Simple.
