Class A Motorhome Ford V10 Oil and Filter Change. Keeping up with Maggie the RV needs, this video is how we change the oil and filter in her. The F53 chassis with the Ford V-10 make an oil change a possibly messy job, due to the location of the drain plug and filter.
We do the oil change different from most people , we use cardboard soda cartons.

Fumoto oil drain plug/valve and some tubing will make oil drain much easier and cleaner. Also, slip a gallon size ziplock bag over the filter before unscrewing to catch all the oil.
@GetGonewithUS
@GetGonewithUS 3 жыл бұрын
I'm old school with liking the drain plug, but trying to get places to change the oil now that we are full timing is a pain, so we may change it out to the Fumoto. Second time we heard about the zip loc bag for the filter, I like that one too. 😀

Doing my first oil change on our 2016 F53 was a mess. But no longer. X2 on the Fumoto drain valve and a length of plastic tubing to drain the oil into a recycle container. And x2 on the ziplock bag for the oil filter. My better half helps me put the new oil back in. She helps by holding a funnel with a length of plastic tubing inserted in the filler tube. I pour the oil into the funnel, while she holds the funnel and makes sure the plastic tubing stays in the filler tube.

Very good. Many people change their own oil but get lost when something unexpected happens. Just like the seal sticking yo the engine. We rescued a family on the side of the road that had just changed their oil and had been for years but lost pressure and couldn't figure out the leak or where it was coming from. I knew instantly what had happened and they were on the road in less than a half hour. It can happen to old and young, noob and full timers. Bet alot of people benefit from your video.

Great video. I agree it is a pain to drain the oil from the pan and the filter without getting it all over the axle. I use a cheap about 12” tall orange traffic cone from Walmart. Turned upside down it works great as a funnel to get the oil around the axle and into the bucket.

Great video thanks, personally I just place a large pan under the axle and let the oil cascade over the axle. I just wipe down the axle afterward....keeps it from rusting too:) To add the oil I use a medium size funnel attached to a few feet of hose then clip the funnel on my wiper blade arm and the other end in the intake pipe, then it is easy just to add the oil....just one more way:)

Wow Lou, you saw right through my reasoning for doing an oil change using a 30 pack! 😂🙃😜 There are not many ways to not hit the axle and have oil every place in the F53. Cheryl will tell you, that would drive me nuts! The V-10 we had in the Class C was a breeze to change. You stay safe too!

I have the same problem and I installed an EZ Oil Drain valve in place of the drain plug. You can add a length of hose so you can drain directly into a jug. Still have the problem with the filter though but there is as much oil that drains out of that.
@GetGonewithUS
@GetGonewithUS 5 жыл бұрын
Yup, that's the other reason we do it the way we do. Drain the oil , then slide the cardboard under the oil filter. After it is replaced, fold up the cardboard and throw it away. We are still looking for easier alternative ways. 😃
@edjarold7017
@edjarold7017 4 жыл бұрын
Use a zip lock freezer bag for the filter. Loosen it first, then slide the bag over it and have the open top flare out. Keep unscrewing filter(gripping it with the bag obviously) and the oil will run into the bag. Nice and clean! No runs, no drips, no errors!

RV Street did a video showing how they change their V10 and they have a special plug for their pan and you never have to take the plug out again. You can buy it on Amazon for about $30...I’m going to get one for ours! No mess whatsoever. You should check it out.
@GetGonewithUS
@GetGonewithUS 4 жыл бұрын
If it is the plug that has an open/close level, we stay away from those. We heard stories of debris on the road getting kicked up and hitting the lever and opening it. Not sure how true or easily that can happen, but it's not worth the risk to us. In theory though it sounds like a great idea. 😃

We’ve got about two years and several thousand miles after installing a Fumoto drain valve on our 2016 F53. Never a single problem and oil changes are a breeze. The drain valve has a plastic cover over the drain mechanism. Additionally you’ve got to simultaneously push on, and move, the drain mechanism to activate the drain function. With the Fumoto valve so high up above the front axle, it would require a truly unique piece of road debris to knock off the plastic cover, and simultaneously depress, then move, the drain mechanism. We considered putting a Fumoto drain valve on my wife’s Kia, however the low ground clearance made that impractical.

@@josedelacruz1501 Hi Jose. The mesh cover was supposed to be removed by Jayco when they built the RV. It's comes that way from Ford to keep pests out of the air cleaner while the chassis is sitting around on the lot waiting to have the RV portion to be built on it. Jayco had a service recall come out about it, telling owners to remove it as it was reducing air flow. It has been removed.

Not sure what an "aluminum cutter cut off" is, but I will assume you mean gutter? If so, a normal house gutter might not catch all of the oil when you first remove the drain plug and end up making a mess. I avoid that by using cardboard. You can get creative and make a contraption that would work better, the cardboard is easier for me and I don't need to store it. 😀

Mine is 5/8" and when I got the socket and and attachment I put is in my special oil change box so I don't have to search for it anymore. That alone cuts my oil changing in half. However, organization has never been my power move.

Lou thanks for video. How many miles on your V10? What kind of average fuel mileage? Has V10 been dependable? Thanks!

Lou I am assuming there is no problem pulling your vehicle? How does the RV act in mountains? I am looking for a recommendation for a 25 ft class A.

@@cahoonm We pull a 2 door Jeep Wrangler 4 down and I have put the rear camera on at times just to make sure it is still there. LOL As for mountains, don't expect the same results as a diesel, the pedal will probably be to the floor going up. There is the Tow/Haul feature that helps a lot, also in 2016, they made the tranny a 6 speed, big difference in our option. We can't give you any recommendations for a 25', we never even looked at any that size. The big thing we tell people is to make sure you like the floor plan of any rig you look at. You will be spending a lot of time in it, so be sure which ever one you choose will fit your lifestyle, then go out and have fun.

Curious if you did the mileage reset or the next oil change due? I have a Tiffin F53 chassis and cant get the reset to work per the F53 chassis manual / instructions. Nit a big deal as I can record the mileage, but it is frustrating when Ford says "do this" and it doesn't work.

To be honest, I don't believe there is one, on our 2016. I looked when we did the first oil change and never found one. There has been 4 oil changes done and I have never seen a light come on. The owners manual says how to reset it, but I have never seen it. I write down the mileage and the date and change it every 5000 miles. Do you have the oil reset light?

@@GetGonewithUS I'm beginning to think it is a misprint in the owners manual and am not going to worry about it any more. Thx for the quick answer and safe travels.

We have an oil reset function on our 2012 Chevrolet Express 3500 van. It’s part of the engine monitor system. But we haven’t found a similar oil reset function on our 2016 F53.

How often do you change the oil? Mileage or time?

Up until we hit the road full time in July, we were only averaging 3000-4000 mile a years, so it was by time. Now it will be more frequent as we are putting on more miles.

Yes it's a very poor design on fords part. I just take my Tiffin to a ford dealer, hopefully Ford will address these problems when they bring out there new V8 that's going to replace the V10

I didn't know they were replacing the the V-10. I also hope they fix the oil and filter location. 😃
