I think the skylight was installed with the opening facing upwards so it can be opened while driving. Otherwise the opening would be facing downwards so the skylight can be opened while it is raining outside and it would keep it from coming inside the campervan.
@RVgeeks4 жыл бұрын
Good thought, Jay! That does seem possible, although the struts that hold the skylight up might not be up to the task of holding that large surface area open against much wind!
@jayl60294 жыл бұрын
@@RVgeeks you are right it is not made to be opened while driving. I have been told the skylight is positioned in such a way as to not get torn off while driving at higher speeds if air were to get under.

We got the Alpine 4 too last year for 2 weeks via a free upgrade as the Alpine 2 (Wilderness had changed their names btw) we booked was crashed by the previous customer. It was our first motorhome/rv holiday and it was so luxurious and easy to drive. I doubt we will have the same level of enjoyment if we were to rent from somewhere else besides Wilderness. We loved that trip so much we booked again with Wilderness, this time the Cruise 2, for 3 weeks this coming October. Looking at the current situation though, we are deeply disappointed that the trip will probably not happen for awhile. :( Love the way you guys did the presentation video! We tried something similar but being inexperienced, all the little bits of video ended up a disaster. Thank you for refreshing our memories! Wilderness should endorse this as one their official walk-through videos! Stay safe too and will be looking forward to your other videos, new subscriber here!

Thanks so much for the nice comment, Julien! We totally agree about Wilderness. So sorry that the current situation is getting in the way of your return visit. Incidentally, we were on our trip in NZ when the pandemic hit, got locked down, and had our flight cancelled. We did get back to North America okay, and there are lots worse places to be stuck than NZ!
@joethecomputerguy14 жыл бұрын
This pandemic mess and the choice of RV campgrounds to close down has made me rethink FT RVing. I just bought a home in Florida for my winters. I'll be selling my 2016 Bounder (with lithium and solar) and starting a search for a B+ with a drop down bed or Murphy bed. I'll be PT and exploring the US when I am not in Florida. Sure wish the quality was similar here in North America as you just displayed in NZ. Stay safe and healthy!
@RVgeeks4 жыл бұрын
Congrats on the new house, Joe! This is indeed a challenging time. We don't understand why the US didn't designate RV parks as essential, like they did in NZ. We found the RVs in Italy, England, and NZ to have many thoughtful design features that US manufacturers would do well to copy (we were in a small campervan in Oz, so nothing there we'd specifically want to emulate). Stay safe out there, Joe!

I love the blinds you're talking about. They would not only keep everything private, but also relatively cool in the summer. They should make them for car use. Here in the Northwest USA during the summer months, the temperature reaches in the 80s. With the windows up, the inside of a car can reach the triple digit temps. With something like this around the windows, I would imagine it would be around 70 degrees, with the AC unit going. 🙂
@RVgeeks4 жыл бұрын
Those window shades are indeed awesome. The ones in the side windows are even highly reflective on the outside. Not sure why the windshield isn't the same way, but either way, they really help keep the rig cool, especially when you combine it with lots of windows that open very wide.

One thing that caught my attention was storage of wine glasses and mugs. The shelf seemed to sag under the weight of upright stemware. Am I wrong? This looked like the only thing that needs improvement on an otherwise awesome RV. Glad you made it back safe.
@RVgeeks4 жыл бұрын
Hi John! If that shelf seemed in the video to be sagging under too much weight, we definitely didn’t notice it. The design of that glassware shelf, where each glass and cup was individually fit into its own holder, was so far and away better than the RV we had in England, where all of the dishware rattled like crazy as we drove!

A thoughtful design . . . functional throughout with restrained elegance. RV design in the states sometimes resembles hotel casinos . . . garish. Wondering about that grey tank pipe - seemed vulnerable below the chassis. Also, did not see any special area to safely secure/hide dark chocolate almonds . . . or does New Zealand offer something better?
@RVgeeks4 жыл бұрын
Hi Scott! That gray tank outlet can indeed get dinged up a bit. One of them had a pretty good chip out of it. As far as chocolate, we fell in love with Whitaker's, especially the Peanut Block. To die for! Hiding is was futile, since you could juts sniff it out. LOL

A question on propane. My class C has a factory quick connect for a grill on it. Of course it is after the regulator. I know that you can buy a connection that goes between your onboard tank and regulator to hook up a portable tank if your onboard tank goes empty. My question is could you use the grill quick connect with a portable tank if your onboard tank goes empty? I know I would need a regulator on it, but would it mess my onboard regulator up having more pressure on the output side of it than on the intake side?
@RVgeeks4 жыл бұрын
Wow! Interesting question! Theoretically? We THINK It should work. But we don't know for sure that it won't cause a problem with the onboard regulator if you did it regularly over time. And we're not 100% sure that the external attachment point doesn't have a backflow preventer in it for that very reason. If you DO try it... you'd definitely want to regulate the external tank down to the same output pressure from your onboard regulator (11" Water Column)... and we'd turn off the valve on the onboard tank, just to ensure that it didn't get filled up if the onboard regulator didn't stop the backflow of propane.

@RVgeeks4 жыл бұрын
Good spotting, Scott! No AC. It's available from Bürstner as an option, but with the windows opening so wide (and the typical climate in NZ), we didn't need it at all. Even though it was Autumn while we were there, it apparently doesn't generally get hot enough in NZ for anything more than the windows and roof vents to be needed.

Great job guys, 2 questions: Are the batteries lithium ion? Would the bikes fit in the garage?
@RVgeeks4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The batteries were AGM. We're pretty sure the bikes would fit, but we didn't actually try. Since they were mounted on the back, we just left them there, leaving room for other stuff in the garage. We drove on some SUPER dusty roads, of course coating the bikes with dust. So the garage might have been a better choice! LOL
@drinkinslim4 жыл бұрын
Although you can get lithium ion batteries, most RVs use lithium iron phosphate (for a number reasons that I won't go into here). It will be interesting to see if NZ travel vans upgrade to lithium over time but, because they're rental vans, use of AGMs no doubt keep the *initial* costs down. Just my 2c. :)

Awesome review guys! I am sitting here in Auckland planning a couple of years in Europe and the US travelling by camper... one of my concerns was buying in europe then selling then buying again in the US but it sounds like I should just take my European RV to the US and sell there when I have finished with it? Any issue using the cassette toilet in the US? I guess the only other issue might be power conversion?
@RVgeeks4 жыл бұрын
Hey Philip! Sounds like you have an amazing couple of years planned! We'd think that transporting, and importing, a non US-spec vehicle to the US would be a somewhat daunting task. The US has some pretty stringent requirements that may make it cost- and effort-prohibitive, including the cost of transporting it across the Pond. We'd guess that selling in Europe and buying a used rig in the States might be simpler, especially if you're looking for a less-expensive rig, as they should be readily available all over rvtrader.com. A cassette should be no problem, although less convenient (people here do have them, usually in smaller rigs), but the power issue might be a real challenge. Another issue that might make it harder to sell a European RV here is the lack of ability to connect directly to city water. People here are used to being able to hook directly up to pressurize their water system and not run off the fresh tank or water pump when they're in a full hook-up RV park. Best of luck. What an adventure!
@ThePhilcam4 жыл бұрын
@@RVgeeks thanks for your feedback! There is a company called Seabridge that will ship RVs from Belgium to Halifax or New York and have found several blogs where they come highly recommended. the cost appears to be about $3k and it takes about a week. Registration seems to be a non event as long as you stay less than a year (could be a sticking point)... having been watching the prices on second hand units in Europe I can see it can take months to sell so have been a bit concerned about selling and buying BUT i do take you point. I guess we should just hope that the US manufacturers one day start to take on some european ideas and style, lol! Safe travels!

I apologize if you have already been asked, but, what was the rental rate? Per day, week, month? Great video! Thanks!
@RVgeeks4 жыл бұрын
No worries... our 5-week rental was roughly NZ$10,000 (US$6,000 with the exchange rate at the time), but it varies by model (the bigger the RV, the more it costs... and ours was one of the larger in their lineup), time of year (busier seasons are more expensive) and options (bikes, liability waivers, unlimited internet, etc are all extras). We'd recommend checking their website (here's a shortlink: hubs.ly/H0nfTBc0) to get a more accurate estimate for yourself.

What do you suspect are the primary reasons we don't see some of these innovations in the states? It's frustrating! Is it that the American consumer doesn't expect more? Many, many thoughtful design features. Almost like the designers were users! :)

I love the glossy white back plate and numerous chrome buttons for inside switches and monitoring gauges. So much nicer than all the black plastic face plates that are ubiquitous in North America.
