I remember flying on the DC-9 in the 1980s and 1990s. Some people may say that they had safety problems. I loved flying on them! My father has been flying for business for 30 years and numerous times on these types of aircraft with no problems. Great video!!

These were the aircraft of my childhood where the noise of jets was music to this kids ear. Id see them all the time coming in and out of Buffalo. You could hear the rumbling coming from the airport a sound you don’t hear nowadays 😢 Fond memories of watching them take off in all their glory, it was the best of times !

Thank You Very Much Ryan Bo. The observation of the Aeromexico´s DC-9´s, and Mexicana´s 727´s, is what motivated me for trying being an airline pilot. Looking at them again, brings back the marvelous feelings about aviation of my youth. Thank You. Very Much.

Excellent video. Lots of memories. There's even one of my old DC-9-33F from Airborne Express. Out of 70 DC9s they had, I doubt one exists. There was even a World Airways DC8-63 at a gate getting fueled up. The DC9 was the poor's start up airline acft of choice. There were plentiful at the time, and those JTD9 engines were like 350 chevys, and air-cooled VW engines, all over the place, plenty of parts all over, and supported worldwide. Thanks for posting.

@ RyanBomar, thanks for video! I spent a good part of my Douglas career on the DC-9 / MD-80 program. I still think the Douglas twin jets are some of the best looking commercial aircraft ever. A great aircraft, and a great place to work. Thanks again.

I flew (as a pilot) DC9-32's for USAIR and loved them. They were called: The last pilot's airliner. They were also called: the rocket. Later on I flew the 737 and I thought it was junk compared to the douglas. Douglas built em strong.

@ATCkeepsUsafe : But how do you know for sure that he is lying? Because he made a spelling error? And you're an A.T.C.? Air Traffic Controller! And even if he is lying, he's only saying that he likes Douglas better than Boeing. So who cares? They're both American companies getting wiped out by the European A300 series. That's the real issue in my eyes. Peace out.

Back in my days of wrenching USN A-7's the C-9 was our mode of transportation getting to training evolutions. Ive got ALOT of C-9 time. We had more pilots than aircraft in our squadron so our pilots frequently flew with us maintenance guys. Ive seen instant 15,000ft lose of altitude caused by wind shear that had people pinned to the overhead. Seen manuovers that had our pilots visibly sweating bullets. The DC-9 is a damned fine airplane, incredibly well built!!!!!

As much as I’ve flown Hughes AirWest, Republic, Air Cal, PSA, Midwest Express, American and Alaska’s DC-9s and variants it was far from a favorite. I know the aircraft was hugely popular with its pilots to me the 9 didn’t handle CAT well since I lived in the West many of my flights were over mountain ranges mixed in with sizzling deserts. The 737 classics had the same issues but the 300 was a huge improvement. My favorite single aisle was the 727-200, I loved all the widebodies, the TriStar and 747 in particular. If you had a window seat way in the back (row 48 area) you could see the big bird flex nose to tail, side to side. But if your flight is under 2 hours and it’s a meal flight forget eating. I’ve taken the late afternoon United 747 LAX-DEN flight a dozen times, not once did they FAs reach row 48 with food before they had to prepare to land. No big deal I choose the rear, but United’s coconut cake was the stuff dreams are made of it was excellent. Oh yea, in the 80-90’s airlines flew widebodies often on shorter flights not the sardine cans also called 320’s, DC-9’s and 737’s of today. It blows my mind that we PAs are OK with 4-5 hour flights in packed 737’s or 320’s with a 28”-29” seat pitch.

Hartsfield-Jackson usually has a large number of MD-80, 83, and 88s before Delta retired the entire fleet of those jets, but I wish they hadn’t. Also, American replaced their MD fleet at their main hub at DFW as well. But they also should’ve stayed airworthy for a few more years along with Delta jets from Atlanta

Congratulations Ryan for a great footage and compilation of the DC-9 program. We at TWA had an extensive diversified fleet of that equipment as we also inherit many from our merger with OZARK Airlines. I understand peoples fascination with the bird as a great workhorse and its profit margin delivery for carriers but for crew still remains my least favorite. Its narrow body, inadequate overhead bins, during full meal service (LOL..thing of the past) a living nightmare for crew & passengers!

One problem: the processing of this vid resulted in an aspect ratio error, as circles are now vertically squashed ellipses. Misconfiguration in the workflow, I think, given the sources had to be 4:3 and the presentation here is also 4:3. This means we're losing picture off the left and right sides!
