I’ve not worked personally with Ian Brown but he was working in the same studio complex as i was with a producer 5 years ago. He was the most genuine, decent, respectful, friendly dude to walk through the door. He was even bantering with my toddler son in reception about football. Absolute legend. Steve Jones has improved over the years but oh… what a cock he was.

Met him once after a gig he was playing with UNKLE. Knew the Promoter so we'd kinda taken over his personal VIP area. It was meant for him to chill out in. But he was cool about it. Anyway, Ian Brown, THE Ian Brown, starts strolling up the steps to his VIP & I'm standing at the top of the steps. And instead of saying "loved the gig" or "you were great" I was in such awe that I just blanked. Like absolutely NOTHING appeared in my mouth or head. I just stood their staring at him like a mannequin, with my mouth open in a slack jawed kinda way, & my hand sticking out. But fair enough, he just smiled, said thank you, & shook my hand. So obviously I wasn't the first person to go into complete brain meltdown when meeting him. If anything, his polite laugh made me think it happens more often than you'd think. Sadly I was in my mid thirties when this happened. So I didn't even have the excuse of being young & dumb. But I'd been a fan 20+ years so that's my excuse. He didn't hang around long, but he made sure to say hello to everyone. And no, I didn't attempt a second conversation. Couldn't take the embarrassment of another brain freeze. It was all cool, and a great night. James Lavelle from UNKLE is an absolute legend. Soundest guy ever. We ended up out on a bender with the Promoter, Club Bookers, UNKLE, suppprt DJ, etc for 3 days straight afterwards. It was extremely messy but everyone held their own. What I'd give to be young again.

It wasn't merely interrupting. The middle class no talent idiot asked them if they were writing the same songs when they tried to write new ones. If he had the opinion that some of their songs were the same as new ones he should have asked them about what songs specifically. He then rushed them to answer because he had a question set up and he wanted it answered the way he wanted it answered, which is bad interviewing again. The question claimed they were rivals of other bands and asked them about fighting styles ffs. The posh interviewer was nervous around them and shouldn't have been interviewing them. He didn't even ask about the dance Brown brought up which was answering his stupid question.

Ian was actually spitting facts about the history of music, art, dance, martial arts and the connections. These are messages of inspiration and knowledge, which i would think music fans would want to hear but the mainstream media only want to know repetitive, easy and short statements that mean nothing to anyone listening. It goes hand in hand with the dumbing down of news and education to keep us locked out of facts and locked in to their point of view. Ian is not the only Mancunian that you will hear talking deep and intellectual and want every conversation to be an exchange in knowledge. In our age he is a singer and musician, in the ancient past he would be much more than that, i could easily imagine him as a spiritual leader and philosopher.

The initial problem is that Steve is clearly a little nervous to be around Ian. He's doing his best but he's a little self conscious and awkward. At this point, Ian is genuinely trying his best to be cool. The first sign of trouble is the fork lift truck moment. Steve is still trying to be polite at that point but it's all a bit odd and Ian picks up on it. It sounds a bit like Steve is really saying: "You can't make music with trucks so stop talking pretentious bollocks". I don't think Steve is trying to say that, but he might have been thinking something like it, and can't really disguise his reaction. Then things ramp up when Ian talks about wonder of all creation. Steve DEFINITELY thinks this is pretentious and he just responds with a sarcastic hmm. At that point, it's no longer just nervousness on Steve's behalf. Now, it's progressing into something else. Things get even more shitty when Steve starts talking about "rival bands". He does that for a reason, knowing that Ian doesn't see music that way and knowing Ian will take exception to it (which he does). He's provoking him at this point. This leads into the capoeira stuff, which is the point of no return. Part of the problem is cultural. Ian is a weed smoker from England who's into his rasta philosophy and pan-African culture in general. Steve is a lager drinker from Wales who's into rugby and pop music. In Wales, if you start talking that way Ian did, about capoeira or anything else, someone's going to take the piss out of you. Steve perceived Ian as pretentious and maybe even a little naive. Ian perceived Steve as cynical and too conventional in his attitudes. Plus, Ian has his own insecurities. On some level he knew that he was being a little silly and that Steve had exposed that part of his character. This might be where the resort to physical intimidation (threatening to attack Steve) came from. It might also have been that Ian was slightly intimidated by the bigger bloke. Ultimately, both men were to blame. But given a choice, I still prefer Ian's idealism to Steve's cynicism.

Yeah I've met some Taffies that have a smarmy and snide vibe like Jones. Actually a tiny minority of them. Likewise u have some Mancs who love to badmouth others masquerading as "humour" but have a huge tantrum if u mirror them. Can't say any of em come over well. Brown comes over as a complete dxck. Shame cos he is really talented.

The moment after Boon says "I'm honoured to meet you" when the right reaction from the presenter would've been "Thanks" or something to that effect, but instead he goes angling for compliments and they realise he's a bit of vain pillock. Both of them were in the wrong here. Brown has given loads of awkward "interviews", and is famous for coming across in them as an overly defensive, uncommunicative twat. The Raw and Uncut "interview" from 1989 with him and John Squire is notorious. Steve Jones was known for being smug, snidey and not an especially good interviewer. First Brown got on the defensive when there wasn't any reason to, and then Jones pushed it in a bid to wind him up. If I'd been Jones, I'd have just ignored the 'you interrupted me' bit, which was just Brown being an assshole, and carried on as before with the questions. Basically asking Brown to dance on a table for him wasn't going to help.

This is hilarious. Steve Jones is such a great comparison to the legendary Ian Brown. Quote from Steve's wiki page: "In 2016, Jones began presenting My Kitchen Rules: UK, a daytime cooking game show for Channel 4.............." Contrastingly, Ian Brown continues to inspire and challenge an entire generation of people, spiritually and politically over a span of 3 to 4 decades. Hmmm.... who would you like to spend 6 hours stuck in an elevator with? I only wish Ian had jumped on the table and round-house kicked him to the jaw. "Game over." "I'm going to run away and do a cooking show on Channel 4.........."

Monday, November 2, 1998 Published at 13:58 GMT UK Ex-Stone Roses star goes back to jail A judge has sent rock star Ian Brown back to jail and warned that every unruly air passenger will be locked up - regardless of who they are. Judge Simon Fawcus threw out the ex-Stone Roses frontman's appeal against his four-month prison term imposed by magistrates last month for threatening behaviour. He said Brown, 35, who had threatened to chop of an air hostess's hands during a British Airways flight, was guilty of "disgraceful and loutish behaviour".
