Hi, Matt. I went to barber school in the late 70's and at that time most people, except for mostly older men, had longer hair styles. Almost everyone had hair lengths anywhere from below the top of their ears to different areas down their back. As a result of that we had very little experience in barber school doing short haircuts. We really weren't taught much at all about clipper over comb cutting and when we did do short haircuts they were usually blocked in the nape area and not tapered. I probably only did 2 or 3 haircuts that were actually tapered in the nape and not blocked the whole nine months that I was in school. I only barbered for around 7 years after barber school but I have always renewed my barber license every year just in case I ever decided to get back into it. I am really thinking about barbering again maybe two to three days a week. I have been watching tons of KZbin videos to learn about clipper over comb for regular classic tapered haircuts and how to do all of the fade haircuts that are popular now. I really like the way you explained the weight line moving up the head. I have never had it explained that way. That's a genius way to explain it. It makes so much sense when explained that way. I have probably watched every video that Ivan Zoot ( aka the clipper guy ) has on KZbin and have never heard him explain it that way. He used to be the head educator for Andis and the guy knows his stuff when it comes to clipper over comb. He's a licensed barber and cosmetologist. I can tell from watching your videos that you also know your stuff when it comes to cutting hair. I do see one thing that you and him do different. Ivan says to avoid putting lines in your haircut that you should never hold the comb horizontal when cutting clipper over comb but that you should always hold the comb at downward angle. Saying all of that, I have a question for you about this video. When your doing the clipper over comb cutting are you pulling the hair straight out from the head from the way it grows, and then tilting the teeth of the comb back towards you, or are you not pulling it straight out from the way it grows, but instead pulling it out at an angle up above or down below the way that it grows out from the head? Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and for taking your time explaining everything in this video. Take care and God Bless.

He’s tilting the top teeth of the comb back towards himself. When he’s clipping the side the back of the comb rest on the heads cheekbone but the teeth is about a 30 to 45 degree towards himself. Hope that helps. Same in the back.

@@jillh763thanks for your reply. I understand tilting the top of the teeth back at about a 30 to 45 degree angle, because by doing that the hair goes from shorter at the bottom of the comb to longer at the top of the comb on each cut up the head giving it the taper effect. The hair gradually goes from shorter to longer as you go up the head at the same angle that you are holding the comb. My question is when you get the hair in the comb and bring the comb out from the head and hold the comb at a 45 degree angle you can then lift the comb up vertically or down vertically or you can keep the hair pulled straight out from the head the way it grows? In other words, when you get under the hair with the comb and pull the comb out from the head and stop with the comb held at 45 degrees or so and then you freeze your hand from moving, should the hair be coming straight out from the head the way the head is shaped? I think the answer would be to pull the hair straight out from the head from the way the head is shaped, but I'm just asking to make sure.

Hey Matt. Been watching your videos for years! I originally trained as a hairdresser but moved to barbering and 10 years in now. Always great content. I still find myself watching some of your techniques for when I cut my wife's hair. ❤
