When you think that both Sarah Sutton(Nyssa) and Matthew Waterhouse(Adric) were only 2 years old when Doctor Who first aired and are now the companions just shows how much Classic Doctor Who you have watched

100% agree with what you said about Nyssa and Tegan. I love to see strong female characters leading the way, and these two are no exception! I'll never be able to pick a single favorite companion, but Nyssa and Tegan are both pretty high up on my list.

Castrovalva is named after a print by MC Escher, which depicts a citadel at the top of a cliff, much like we see in this episode. One of producer John Nathan Turner's bosses at the BBC had another Escher print hanging on the wall of his office, one of the kinds that played tricks with perspective, the thing Escher is perhaps most famous for. John Nathan Turner disliked looking at it, because of it's distorted perspective. Christopher Bidmead wrote this story and named it after an Escher work as a gentle dig at Nathan Turner.

There’s a little village in Italy named Castrovalva. It also sits atop a hill. I wonder if Escher was there and got some inspiration.

'Castrovalva' marks a number of firsts for the show. It's the 1st story for the 5th Doctor; although it was recorded 4th, partly to help Peter Davison get a grip on the part, but mainly because his original debut story, 'Project Zeta-Sigma' (from the authors of 'Meglos') proved unworkable. It's the first time the character was credited as 'The Doctor' rather than 'Doctor Who' (partly due to John Nathan-Turner's desire to court the fan-base - hence the flashbacks and references to things like 'Reverse the polarity of the neutron flow'). And it's also the first story to be broadcast on weekdays. Parts 1 and 2 would run consecutively, on Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th January 1982. This weakened the part one cliff-hanger somewhat and led at least one newspaper columnist to decry the move; stating that the BBC obviously didn't understand the whole 'Saturday-ness' of the operation. Peter Davison would later defend the move, noting that while the public were comforted by the idea that Dr Who was on a Saturday... they were no longer sitting down to watch it then. Of course, the Beeb had ulterior motives. They were actually trying out different timeslots ahead of their first modern soap opera... the series that would ultimately become 'EastEnders'...

As regeneration stories go, I like Castrovalva. MC, if you wish to visit there, the location isn't too far away from you. It's Harrison's rocks, at Groombridge, in Kent.

Everyone is aware of the tangled series of events that led the young David McDonald (the future David Tennant) to meet and marry the daughter of an early 1980's sci-fi actor. Sandra Dickinson had appeared the year before Season 19, as 'Trillian' in the TV adaptation of Douglas Adams' acclaimed (and seemingly omnipresent) radio comedy 'The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy'. But this version included a certain character that she immediately knew her husband, Peter Davison, was right for. (I will avoid, just in case you're interested in seeing it some day, revealing the identity of the character). In fact, Davison and Dickinson had first appeared together in ITV's 'answer to Dr Who', The Tomorrow People (his first screen role). And he would grown inwardly if he knew this was being made public again...

Davison and Dickinson were musically talented too. They composed and sang the theme to Button Moon in 1980. Again with the sci-fi motif...

For me, The 5th Doctor's era is just behind The 3rd Doctor's in terms of my favourite. I can't remember disliking a story. Also, the companions are all very strong in their own right. I'm so excited for you to get into the nitty gritty of it all. Up to this point, our opinions on Classic Who have been VERY similar, so I wonder if that'll stay the same or if you'll deviate and think differently from this story onwards.

I love this story! It’s such an odd story in the best way, continuing the vibe of Season 18 but also creating a new vibe too. Tegan and Nyssa are delightful and I love seeing them be functionally the main characters of the episode. As you mentioned last episode, it’s continuing directly on from Logopolis (probably mostly due to being by the same writer, Season 18 script editor Christopher H. Bidmead), which gave us some great comedic moments in Part One. For me this is even better than Logopolis, and I feel like we really get to showcase our two new companions well, as well as exploring more of the TARDIS and the beautiful green location filming.

Interesting that you are already drawing comparisons between the fifth and eleventh Doctors, as Peter Davison basically pioneered the “old man in a young man’s body” approach to playing the Doctor that Matt Smith would later adopt - Smith would also be the one who eventually took away Peter’s record of being the youngest ever Doctor after nearly three decades. I agree that Tegan and Nyssa really get to shine in this story, and they make a great team. Indeed, the companion actors were a lot happier this season than in the previous one, as they all found Peter much easier to work with than Tom, and much more of a team player. You may have noticed that the interest in the inner workings of the TARDIS shown in Logopolis is taken further here, as the two stories were both written by Chris Bidmead, by now the show’s former script editor. Castrovalva was not even supposed to be the fifth Doctor’s debut story, but the adventure originally intended to fulfil that role (written by the authors of Meglos) fell through and Castrovalva ended up being commissioned quite late in the day. It was a good thing, though, both because this is a good story in its own right and because it allowed Bidmead to pick up where he had left off with Logopolis, ensuring continuity during the switch from one Doctor to another.

Castrovalva's a city but the name of the planet is unknown. Whenever I watch The Christmas Invasion I get vibes from this story because the Fifth and Tenth Doctor are both having regeneration troubles and pretty much out through most of the story. Tegan and Nyssa were indeed brave and very handy as most female companions in the past were sadly treated as damsel in distress except Leela, Tegan and Nyssa.

Romana was, for 90-95% of the time, arguably not a damsel in distress. Jo, Liz Shaw and Sarah Jane were also fairly plucky!

Great link with the Christmas invasion and Castrovalva. Like you I prefer regeneration stories where we see The Doctor more involved in the story whilst still having to recover from regeneration which is why I prefer regen stories like robot, woman who fell to earth and Eleventh Hour

I'm not sure which is the harder to say; Castrovalva or Logopolis? Yes, this is the first time there have been 2 female companions at the same time since Barbara/Vicki way back in Season 2. I like Nyssa a lot but, I have to confess, I find Tegan a bit tiresome sometimes.

I'm not a big fan of the stories where a post-regeneration Doctor is incapacitated. I prefer Power of the Daleks or Robot, where the new Doctor jumps into the action really quickly.

Talk of the continent is a little painful at the moment, as I have acquired a German girlfriend who is trying to sell the family homestead and is requiring constant support. The upside is that she'll be in a position to support me in return. Love is grand, but it does knock any hope of being a millionaire on the head!
