The Daleks had been absent from the series for five years at this point. Terry Nation had withdrawn them from Doctor Who with the intention of launching them in their own series. But to his surprise and the surprise of early critics of Doctor Who, while the Doctor could survive and even thrive without the Daleks, the Daleks without the Doctor simply didn't work. Producer Barry Letts liked to begin each new season with a gimmick or 'hook', The first story of Season Seven saw the debut of the Third Doctor, the first story of Season Eight introduced the Master, for Season Nine he decided to bring back the Daleks. He actually got in a bit of trouble for this, because he didn't realize Terry Nation owned the rights to the Daleks and they hadn't obtained his permission to use the Daleks beforehand. Fortunately Nation was very amiable about the whole thing. The version you're watching is a special edition where some of the original effects have been updated using modern technology. It had been so long since they had last done the Daleks so they got the voices a bit wrong in this story, so all the Dalek's dialogue has been redubbed to make them sound right. The original effects of the laser guns was a bit pathetic so that's been redone, the CGI establishing shot of the building where the Daleks are headquartered was inserted etc. Really priceless reaction. Glad you didn't look at the titles 😀

There were no repeats in the 1970s so it would have been pretty huge having The Daleks appear after 5 years and Also the first time in colour
@robalexander80654 жыл бұрын
There were repeats in the early 70s, though not of Dalek serials. That said, aside from An Unearthly Child, which was repeated the following week back in 1963, the first ever serial to be repeated was Evil of the Daleks in 1968, which was meant to be an example of the dangers Zoe could expect to face by joining the TARDIS. Ironically, Zoe never actually met the Daleks herself.

This is such a strong story. After such a long absence, it's good to see the return of our favourite angry space pepperpots. The updated VFX I don't have any strong opinion about, but the special edition is absolutely the better version just for Nick Briggs's Dalek voices. The original ones were... let's just say the actor had clearly never heard a Dalek before. And I honestly think Briggs does the best Dalek voices.

I just bought - finally now it's available here in Oz - the Season 9 Collection, and the first story I watched was Day of the Daleks. It's taken me on a bit of a trip for a number of reasons. Day was one of my first ever Doctor Who VHS titles, back in around 1987/88. Whilst I did know Pertwee's Doctor from re-runs, actually having an episode to watch on demand was amazing, and - particularly when it was such a good story as this one. So - watching this again now... has really just made me re-appreciate Pertwee's Doctor. If I was ranking the Docs, generally 1, 3 and 6 are in the bottom 3. And yet - you have brilliance like this! The BluRay, btw, is amazing... such great image quality, could see the actor's pores.

The Daleks hadn’t been seen for 5 years at this point so it’s a really big deal that they are back. Interestingly this wasn’t originally going to have the Daleks in it but they where added at the last minute ad the production team wanted their to be a returning villain for the season opener. Though they did this without Terry nation’s approval which he got angry with but they sorted it out in the end. As most have pointed out this version has new effects I personally love the new effects and I don’t say that often this is a rare story where it just enhances everything especially the dales voices which in the original where terrible!

You reaction to the first appearance of the Ogrons - and then later the Daleks - is epic! There's a lot going on in this episode and the Wikipedia entry points to some issues with the production - apparently the Daleks were actually inserted into the story from an idea for a season end, which some reviewers didn't like at the time; interesting, because when I read the book as a kid I thought it was a great story, and a natural fit for the Daleks. I didn't realise on reading it that this was the first appearance of the Ogrons.

The Dalek return ensured the show the coveted Radio Time front cover - but I wonder what people thought of it? They had been supposedly killed off for good in the 1960s (with Terry Nation famously getting close to producing his own colour Dalek serial for the American market). My older brother would have been 10 when this came out, so he would be in a position to remember 'Evil of the Daleks' - but half a lifetime ago. A situation that I also experienced later on in the show's run...

A great reaction to the opening of my favourite Season 9 story. I think it's a bit of a shame BritBox didn't make the original version available, so you could see what the first viewers of this saw in 1972. The Dalek voices in this version are better, but I don't like the new effects, which just look totally fake to me. Anyway, long-time viewers back then must have been thrilled to have the Daleks back, and in colour for the first time. The irony is that they did not feature at all in the original draft of this story, which was the work of Louis Marks, making his first contribution to the series since Planet of Giants seven years earlier. Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks asked him to substitute the alien master race he had originally devised for the story with the Daleks instead, and Terry Nation gave his approval after reading the script, which is a strong one. Interesting you liked Jo's Country & Western look here, as if I remember correctly from the DVD commentary Katy Manning was not so keen! The guerilla soldier with the moustache at the end of the episode was played by Jimmy Winston, a one-time pop star who had played keyboards with The Small Faces in the 1960s before they decided to replace him. Incidentally, this episode was first broadcast on 1 January 1972, making it the second Who episode to receive its original broadcast on New Year's Day - The Daleks' Master Plan part 8 had been the first in 1966.

Good grief, the Special Edition CGI feels really disrespectful to the original story. If they had just fixed the Dalek voices, it wouldn’t bother me, because they were pretty annoying, but putting in these totally extraneous CGI shots seems to imply that the serial wasn’t good enough before the CGI, which misses the point entirely. (Plus it sets people up for disappointment when they watch unaltered versions of Classic episodes.) Classic Doctor Who isn’t still a great show today for its brilliant, up-to-date special effects-it’s still a great show today because it knew how to tell a good story. Not every story did this well, but that’s the point-that’s how every Doctor Who story stands or falls, as a story, and that’s a criterion that will never go out of date regardless of the effects. (Also, the CGI itself just doesn’t fit into the 70s at all. Personally, I think it’s visually lot more jarring and out of place than anything George Lucas has added to Star Wars.)

I'm not a fan of these 'Special Edition' versions, to be honest. You are no longer reacting to the show as broadcast at the time, but some weird mish-mash of old and modern, so you slightly miss out on the historical context of watching the show in order, and seeing how the style develops over the years. That said, this is far from the worst offender (some of the earlier ones have some really jarring CGI that has ironically now dated just as badly as the original 70's FX).

Five years without Daleks and they're finally back...
