Does anyone else just love the fact that the Daleks have the TARDIS as model target. Like one of them came up with that idea and everyone excitedly said it was a good idea.

If the strange incidental music in this adventure reminds you of an early story in the Pertwee era, that's because this story was scored by Carey Blyton who composed the incidental music for "The Silurians" way back in season Seven!

Daleks with machine guns! That's gotta be worth the price of admission alone. The shot of the burning Dalek is iconic, I remember it being used on the rear cover of a Dalek annual, I had. Pity the camera track they laid in the sand pit, to allow them to move, comes into shot a couple of times..

And an artist's take on that shot was used for the cover art of the Target novelization of this story back in the 80's too!

Such a long week with out any Marie-Claire reaction. The creepy creature in the tunnel with Sarah Jane is played by Arnold Yarrow, who turned 100 on April 17th this year.

Arnold Yarrow is now the oldest living actor to appear in Doctor Who since Earl Cameron died a couple of days ago at age 102. After Arnold, it’s our dear Ian William Russell who’s still going at age 95.

This is my favorite ever Dalek design/color scheme! (Although the Supreme Council Dalek from Planet of the Daleks comes close.) The concept of "Daleks without the power to kill" is one of the most brilliant things I've seen on the show, and I'd love to see it done again and used even more. Imagine a powerless Dalek that is forced to work with the Doctor - it could even become a sort of companion (unwillingly, of course)!

Nasty old Dan Galloway was played by an actor called Duncan Lamont, and in the years since I first saw 'Death to the Daleks' I've come to really like him in a variety of things. He played a crucial role in the original Quatermass TV series, and in the third Quatermass film - and the Jon Pertwee era of Doctor Who drew a lot of inspiration from Quatermass, so it's appropriate for him to crop up here...

I love the bit near the start of this episode when the Daleks are discussing their secret plans together in very loud voices... all of 3 metres away from where the Doctor and the humans are waiting. How did they not hear all of that? Seriously though, I love the idea of having helpless Daleks without weapons and I wish more had been done with the concept. :)

For the filming in the sand pits for this episode the Daleks were travelling along rails set into the sand which were intended to be out of camera range, but a little bit of one rail was visible as you noticed. There actually was a funny accident during the filming of this sequence the Daleks had to be pushed to get started rolling along the rails and Jon Pertwee volunteered to give the one nearest him a shove to get going, but he pushed it a bit too hard and the operator and Dalek went "Whooooooaaahhh! Aaaaah!" zooming along the rails until it collided with the one in front causing a huge Dalek style road accident. No actors were injured but the Dalek cases had to be patched up hurriedly before more filming could be done.

Terry Nation loved the reversion to primitive idea, re Survivors - try that next!
@alexfletcher5192
@alexfletcher5192 4 жыл бұрын
The Daleks being useless? What a concept! In fact it underlines a central dichotomy at the heart of Terry Nation's Dalek Empire, whereby he could send-up his own intellectual property - but nobody else could! A year after this, Spike Milligan made infamous use of one of the Dalek props in his 'Q6' series (kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIDUmYWulJZkiMk) and Nation's agent, Roger Hancock, swung into action. At this, Milligan issued a letter to Nation, reminding him of the time a young Welsh comic and gag-writer had turned up on the doorstep of Associated London Scripts (the 'scriptwriter's collective' formed by Spike and fellow comic Eric Sykes in the 1950s; giving work to comedy writers like Johnny Speight, Galton & Simpson, and even Who alumni like Dennis Spooner and David Whittaker) asking for work. The objection was soon retracted! But as far as taking the piss out of the Daleks is concerned, Nation was actually the worst offender. His Daleks stammer, interrogate dummies, and even create unconvincing duplicates of Doctor Who. Given that this is a race who, in three successive stories, moved from being dependent on the power of their own city, to conquering Earth, to having the power of time-travel(!), maybe it was necessary to remind people they are actually quite ridiculous!

As you articulated last time out, getting the Dalek props to move on location was no easier in 1974 than it had been in 1964. Here's Director Michael E Briant (who was also behind the camera on 'The Sea Devils' and 'The Green Death') to explain how they got around it - with a little help from the show's star: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2i0naeaqK-soJI.

I have to say, I always really liked the silver-and-black Dalek livery in this story, and how the senior Dalek’s rank was shown with different coloured ‘ear’ lamps. Although I was always alarmed at how easy it was for the Exillons to destroy a Dalek by lightly tapping it with wooden sticks. Even without their guns, their metal shells would surely resist bows, arrows, sticks etc. Because of how easy it is to destroy Daleks in this story, they just don’t feel menacing enough. Combine that with the music cues that Carey Blyton wrote for the Daleks in this story, and they come off rather silly.
@jeanlafayette7152
@jeanlafayette7152 11 ай бұрын
The ease with which the Dalek was destroyed could be explained by the power drain that affects so much technology on the planet - in addition to rendering the standard Dalek guns ineffective, it also weakened whatever force field or similar defensive mechanisms would normally make a Dalek invulnerable to most attacks.

I like how all the members of the human expedition are wearing matching uniforms, yet you use the description, "the one in the blue" 😄. Dan is the one you're referring to. The one who's a bit too ruthless in the pursuit of his duty.

Welcome back from a well-deserved break, which I hope you enjoyed and has left you raring to go at the remainder of this season. Like the funky hair band too. It's a real pity they killed off John Abineri's character so quickly, as he was a great actor who was superb playing General Carrington in The Ambassadors of Death, but feels rather wasted here. I would have bumped off Jill instead, as Joy Harrison's performance is decidedly wooden. Overall I find this episode a bit of a chore - the ritual sacrifice stuff is hackneyed and tedious, and while stopping the Daleks from using their weapons was a potentially interesting plot development, it isn't exploited much and they are armed and dangerous again very quickly. Having said that, the scene where they shoot up the TARDIS model is quite amusing! Those were real arrows that were being fired during the ambush scene, and you may have spotted that one of them landed a little too close to Jon Pertwee for comfort...
