I absolutely love that Tom Baker and Ian Marter were such good friends out of this, that they actually tried to write their own script for a Doctor Who Movie. Whilst it never made it to the screen, it was novelised a couple years ago. Ian write a good many of the Target novels before his untimely death. Harry is not one of my favourite companions, but - he was bloody good all the same!

Well done for recognising the Zygons so quickly and, yes, this is another story filmed around your neighbourhood, as the budget didn't stretch to a Scottish shoot! This was the first Who story to be overseen by the show's greatest director, Douglas Camfield, since he was taken ill while making Inferno five years earlier, and he makes his return in style with a tightly shot episode that really ratchets up the tension; even though the locations are in Sussex, Camfield manages to conjure up the illusion that we really are north of the border. Ironically, I think the only Scot in the cast was Angus Lennie, playing the pub landlord - you previously saw him in The Ice Warriors. When New Who began, the Zygons were one of the classic series monsters that fans clamoured to see return, though of course they did have to wait a long while. Nice to have UNIT, the Brig and Benton back, but by all accounts this was not the happiest of stories to make for either Nick Courtney or John Levene, in part because they found Tom considerably less friendly to them on this one than he had been on Robot. By now, Tom was settled in the role and also knew he was a hit with the viewers; his ego had swollen a bit in consequence, and he didn't like having to share the screen with long-established, popular characters like the Brig and Benton who might steal his limelight. Tom's attitude may well have informed the Doctor's grumpiness when he meets up with the Brig at the inn.

This is Douglas Camfield's triumphant return to the Director's chair (having been invalided out of the job during the making of 'Inferno') and, between his vision and the spooky soundtrack from Geoffrey Burgon, it's a real stand-out. Despite Hadrian's Wall apparently proving a barrier for the production - as you're now aware - the music does lend the episodes are stark and moody atmosphere that fits the brief. If my memory is not completely swiss-cheese, I think this story was held over from the back end of Season 12.

For reasons that are not entirely clear, Douglas Camfield always refused to work with Dudley Simpson, the show's regular composer. Simpson did score the first two Who stories that Camfield directed, but they appear to have fallen out not long after and subsequently Camfield either used stock music or other composers on his stories.

'THE Loch Ness Monster!' cries an exasperated Sarah in 'School Reunion'; having finally got one up on Rose Tyler. But it's not just lochs and monsters. This story gives us tartan, kilts and sporrans, mention of haggis, cabers and the Laird and Angus Lennie (previously Storr the Scavenger in 'The Ice Warriors'). All it needs is: Sean Connery; Chic Murray; Billy Connolly (doing the one about the last supper); Andy Stewart and 'Donald, where's my Trousers?'; The Bay City Rollers and Lulu (both having big hits with cover versions that year); and the pipes and drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards piping 'Amazing Grace' - possibly in a medley with 'Spirit of the Glen' and 'Flowers of the Forest'. In fact, did I not know it was by Robert Banks Stewart (who later created hit shows in the detective genre with 'Shoestring' and 'Bergerac') I might be tempted to think it was commissioned by the Scottish Tourist Board!

Now that we know you've finished all 4 parts of this story I'll mention that Zygons was originally to be a 6 parter and the finale from Season 12. The original structure of S12 was to be 26 episodes with a 4|4|6|6|6 breakdown as the previous few series had been. One of the 6 parters became Ark/Sontaran and Zygons was changed to 4 parts to start S13, it having been decided that the next season would be brought forward to the autumn. There was almost no gap between the production of Zygons and the new production season and the net result was that 1975 saw nearly two seasons shown in one year. There was however one slight problem with a certain heroic actor losing two episodes from his 26 episode contract...to be continued...
