Funny thing is Sarah had so many more trumps that she could have used. She didn't mention Sontarans (which Rose never met) or Ice Warriors (which Rose never met) or Cybermen (which Rose met later). She didn't even say "I was there when they were created!" or mention Davros when Rose responded to "Daleks" by saying "Met the emperor!"

Zygon Harry is creepy as hell. As a kid I remember being scared by the bit where he attacks Sarah with the pitchfork. I guess there's something unsettling about the image of companions turning on one another. Ah, yes the Loch Ness Monster. These days it may look like the Monster Muncher from the Chewits adverts, but it's a massive step up in visual effectiveness compared to the dinosaurs in the previous season.

The book was announced with the title "Doctor Who Meets The Loch Ness Monster" which sounds like a polite social visit for tea or something. I bought it with a book token I won in a school drawing competition when I was little. Years later I got an Ebay job lot that included, as a surprise, a copy signed by Tom Baker.

7:35 Ian Marter is really proving his acting chops. A fun thing about this is the reason that the Zygons whisper is because Tom Baker lamented to Director Douglas Camfield about how the Daleks shouted their lines and that it'd be nice to have one that whispers. Camfield said 'I got you' and so when Baker went to do this, he got the biggest kick out of whispering Zygons. As for their ship, he thought it was pizza back then, he still does to this day.

Another fun reaction! Don't you just love the organic technology of the Zygons, those 'sucker' buttons & switches...& knobs. Even the morph between the Zygon & it's human form was a nice wee effect I thought. Some creepy, unsettling performances in this one, even aside from 'Dark Harry', that bit where the Doctor makes that howling moan in the decompression chamber always got me! & I don't know if anyone else feels this way but, as a wee boy watching the 4th Doctor, as much he was a hero & you _are_ rooting for him...I was always a bit *scared* of him too!! seriously!! lol I love Nessie in this too & they made a not bad recreation of her...the neck's a bit shorter here than the *real* one but, not bad👌 :) It's a pity you've already recorded all your reactions to this story Marie-Clare, I would love to have seen you review/react to at least one entire episode...in a whispering Zygon voice!! lol

The arrival of 'Nessie' was what really nailed it for me in this story. As a kid I was fascinated by tales of the unexplained - the Yeti, Nessie, Bigfoot etc. What I liked about Dr Who as I started reading the books of the earlier seasons that I never saw, was how much they touched on these myths and legends (sometimes using them as an influence for an original story, such the Peladon stoires in Pertwee's era). Despite seeing the original broadcast and reading the book I'm surprised by how much I'd forgotten about the story that all came surging back the moment I saw your reaction. The creepy nurse, the Zygons shape shifting, the spy camera in the Deer's head. Also, I wonder if anyone noticed but the Zygon ship looks like it has grown rater than been built (I think it was described this way in the book) which is reminiscent the Alien nest in a certain famous Sci Fi film that came after...of course, the BBC writers could have been inspired by HR Giger's artwork that was already published then. I loved the Yeti story from the second Dr and will be looking up your reaction to that having never seen the TV broadcast. Can't wait!

It is a testament to Ian Marter's acting ability that he made Zygon Harry look really creepy and threatening, but credit also to Douglas Camfield for making those scenes in the barn so unsettling and scary - they are another example of how the show was much more willing under Hinchcliffe and Holmes to take risks and go that little bit darker. The Zygons themselves, while not especially original in conception (they have a lot in common with the Chameleons from The Faceless Ones), are a triumph of design. Philip Hinchcliffe was very keen to get away from Vogon-type aliens where full masks were used, and the way the facial features of the actors here are blended in with the half-mask works extremely well and makes the Zygons look more naturalistic. Future Oscar-winner Jim Acheson designed the costumes, and John Friedlander looked after the masks. The Skarasen/Loch Ness Monster works less well, appearing very jerky on film, but Canfield knew it and tried to keep its appearances to a minimum. Nice idea though to have a sci-fi explanation for Nessie's existence - indeed, it was the starting point for the whole story, as writer Robert Banks Stewart was himself a Scot and thought it would be fun to have a Who story based around the old legend of Loch Ness.

Yes, the Doctor's mesmeric abilities have been sorely lacking in recent years (unless you count his taming of Aggedor), but the ability to go without oxygen explains a few things - how the 2nd Doctor survived the seed pods in 'Seeds of Death' perhaps? I had a strange dream last night. I was in the chilled section of a branch of Marks & Spencer in the mid-1980s, with Sarah & Harry. (It was always the same 4 sandwiches: BLT; Ham, Cheese & Pickle; Cheese & Celery; Egg & Cress). We got home - to a house that resembled the one I shared with 5 others at college in the 1990s (although it sometimes seemed like 20) - and discovered that the R-rate for COVID-19 had risen above 2 and Sarah had tested positive. What does it all mean? I have reached 2 conclusions: 1), I spend too much time on this channel, and 2), I'm hungry.
@alexfletcher51924 жыл бұрын
The sequence with the Skarasen (which, to my southern ponce ears, even sounds Scottish) is, in my view, one of the best-executed set-pieces in Classic Who. It's also a reminder that the standards by which the success of visual effects were judged were quite different back then - before a thousand keyboard warriors could urgently live tweet their joy/bemusement/disgust at the viability (or non-viability) of a certain creature or effect. It was fantasy, at a time when fantasy was generally considered a children's genre, and as long as it was 'scary' or 'monstrous' realism could go hang. After all, who is to say what the Loch Ness Monster really looks like?

Zygon Harry is so creepy. It's interesting that in Classic Who the Zygon just take on the physical forms of their human subjects without bothering to pay much attention to copying the personality. In New Who they have a much better all round game and are more convincing as the humans they disguise themselves as. I'm not sure which is scarier though.

Great reactions this episode. It’s stories like this that always highlight for me deeper differences between classic Who and Nu-Who. Although I’m a fan of the new show it has to be said that these classic stories, even though the SFX is a little dated still hold up. Especially the characterisation of the Doctor himself. Similar accusations were made regarding the potrayal of the Welsh in The Green Death and perhaps it could happen again - we shall see...

Zygon Harry is fabulous in this, the Zygon costumes are still excellent, and the scene where the Doctor hypnotizes Sarah to save her from suffocating is interesting - but honestly, this story really doesn't do much for me, especially after Part One. It doesn't add anything to the UNIT format - all those elements feel pretty repetitive and bleh, aside from the Brig's kilt in the first episode. The Zygons are cool, but they're really the only interesting thing in the story for me, and it's just not enough. I've just never been able to get into this story. Glad you're enjoying it though!

I would agree that this story is a bit overrated. From a production point of view it is superbly done, Skarasen aside, but the script is fairly basic and superficial, and doesn't have the deeper layers of meaning that the very best Who scripts possess. It's a very entertaining and imaginative story, but for me it lacks real meat.

@sixstanger004 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the Zygons, like so many other classic Who villains, were reduced to comic relief under Moffat. IMO, this is largely due to NuWho having a different target audience. While the classic series was predominantly enjoyed by hardcore sci-fi fans, the revival was generally aimed at audiences that didn't necessarily watch sci-fi. The revival makes this clear frequently by incorporating pop culture references - Satellite 5 as a shopping mall, Satellite 5 filled with reality game shows (despite this being thousands of years into the future), the locals in futuristic settings always dressed in modern clothes, using modern weapons, etc (The Impossible Planet, Midnight, 42, etc). The point is, as I tried to explain to someone else on one of your previous videos, is that NuWho is considerably watered down for mass appeal, just as the 2009 Abrams Trek was. Ever since these niche franchises became mainstream - ever since it became "cool" to dig sci-fi content, they were all forced to dumb themselves down for the sake of the wider audience. In the case of the Zygons, you're smart enough to suspend your disbelief and accept that these are aliens from another planet. To casual viewers, they look silly, sound silly. So in modern Who, they are portrayed as SILLY, because that's how casual audiences perceive them. My biggest complaint with the Chibnall era has been that Whittaker's portrayal of the Doctor has been too much of a Matt Smith wannabe; the series can't seem to play it straight, particularly in future settings (The Tsunangra Conundrum?). The modern series just has no faith whatsoever in it's audience's intelligence.
@julieeverett74424 жыл бұрын
good point, and I actually cant stand the 11th doctor, I like the person, not the doctor, and Jodie has no personality at all, she certainly cant pull off the old/young doctor that Matt TRIES to. I grew up in this era Jon/Tom (and a future doctor)were my doctors until I hit uni and got serious about study. The thing with the 70's early 80's was suspending disbelief and use this weird thing called imagination, something modern era seems to be lacking. Even Marie Claire cant seem to comprehend this is where the Zygons started, with 4th, not a modern thing
