Nice comment saying The Doctor and Adric is like a father/son relationship. Not having a male companion for a while and from his age, like grandfather/grandson relationship, he’s even got Susan’s haircut
@johng5859
@johng5859 3 жыл бұрын
Matthew Waterhouse has cited this as his favourite of the stories he appeared in, and I can understand why. Adric gets some very nice scenes with the Doctor here, and despite his inexperience you can sense Matthew trying to raise his game to keep pace with Tom. It also boasts some lavish and very atmospheric set and costume design, and I really like the imaginative way that the Keeper gives us the scene-setting infodump, taking over the TARDIS and using the scanner to tell his story - it is another example of the stylistic innovation which is such a hallmark of Season 18. Your excitement and enthusiasm for the closing stages of this season is infectious - can’t wait for your reactions to the next few episodes…

The oldest of the male Consuls in this story is played by John Woodnutt, who has previously appeared in Doctor Who as the owner of the plastic factory in Spearhead From Space, the Draconian Emperor in Frontier in Space, and the Duke of Forgill/Broton in Terror of the Zygons. The oldest of the female Consuls is played by Margot Van der Burgh, who previously appeared as Cameca, the First Doctor's "fiancee" in The Aztecs. Geoffrey Beevers, who plays the voice of the Melkur, was the real life husband of Caroline John ( former companion, Liz Shaw).

Writer Johnny Byrne was familiar to John Nathan Turner for his work as script-editor on the BBC's highly-acclaimed adaptation of the novels by James Herriot, 'All Creatures Great & Small' (since revived on Channel 5) - on which JNT had served as Production Unit Manager. But it's really his contribution to Gerry Anderson's live action sci-fi classic 'Space: 1999' that landed him this gig. The brief centred on how a culture adapts to its head of state or the reigning symbol of power being snuffed out. And who or what might replace it.

The Keeper of Traken does feel like the beginning of the end, I love that this story has a more high stakes feel even though its set on this smaller scale planet. Also its really good seeing more of the residents and history of a planet as I feel like it's something Doctor who doesn't do often

This one is my favorite story of the season. I love the Keeper of Traken. Great design, story, sets, costumes and direction. And a nice return appearance for actor Denis Carey as "The Keeper" who had previously played Professor Chronotis in "Shada", the story which would have closed out season 17, had it been completed in 1979.

Johnny Byrne was awesome as a writer he sadly never worked on Blakes Seven but worked on Space 1999 and when he wrote his script for Keeper of Traken he did not feature the Master in the early dratfs instead the villain was a rogue spirit from a galactic race called Mogen and the dr and Mogen had met in an untelevised story but as things went JNT requested that the story be heavily altered to include the Master

I’ve always found this story a little slow and struggled with it because of that, but it’s got some very nice worldbuilding-if a bit too nice to be interesting, perhaps, and yet not quite nice enough to be consistent.

Gareth roberts always say this is the beginning of a new era, a area he felt started with Sarah janes departure I would say I enjoy watching his story back to back with warriors gate as it compliments it Shows the red writing of The script editor he could swap styles from the previous story Although like warriors gate this has a great fairy tale feel to it snd Tom Baker still has ideas up his sleeve I love adric but he’s hated I don’t know why

Despite the pan-European Art Nouveau aesthetic, 'The Keeper of Traken' is more Walpole than Wilde. The romantic tradition of an essentially privileged society being threatened by some 'evil', though, is still very compelling. Now travelling with a single male companion (for the first time since the 1st Doctor and Steven Taylor became embroiled in 'The Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve' back in 1966), Tom Baker's Doctor seems like a semi-paternal figure. Matthew Waterhouse (Adric) conveys his appreciation of this story on the DVD/Blu-ray commentary and it's appropriate. Whereas a strong-headed Steven or Jamie might have clashed with this culture, the boy genius seems strangely at home. And he's not the only child performer worthy of attention here...

You were far from alone in your trepidation. Certain information had emerged to the press over the course of Season 18 (as far back as the broadcast of 'Meglos') that was going to change the face of the show. The series had become a kind of very predictable institution - but who wants to live in an institution?...
@Joey15811

This story for me despite some interesting ideas, this story just feels more on the dull side. Probably 3rd or 4th best of season interchangable with Meglos for me
