I think I´ve seen this video a lot...more than 10 times during these years... and never get´s bored to me... this guy is a genius. Look what he did in his game... rotoscopy, animation, limited color pallet, realtime engine, storytelling, level design, sound design, mechanics, physics in some levels...a very special kind of gun, ...even water... and glass... he even developed his own language based in asm and basic...trully amazing! Thank You, Eric Chahi! I´ve never forget this game that I´ve played since my childhood!

22:25 Only at GDC. Eric Chahi, developer of the watershed platformer Another World, shows a picture of Karateka, a 1984 landmark title by Jordan Mechner. Eric asks if Jordan is in the audience. Jordan raises his hand.

Now I could be wrong, but I have a feeling that was just someone in the audience raising their hand jokingly.

That game has really inspired me. I used to play it, back in the day. It brings many good memories. Eric Chahi is such an inspiration. He's really so creative and a genius! The way he approached the creation of the game was totally awesome. Thanks sharing.

This talk is awesome! And I won’t never forget my first minutes of gameplay in my father’s Amiga 500 totally amazed by the whole experience.

Once I was playing I had to do something else and left the Amiga powered on, later when I went back I found my dad playing it and he seemed to be able to get the controls without anyone explaining them to him. Maybe he saw me but never asked how it worked. It was nice to see him playing as he never played anything before or at least I never saw him. It’s a nice memory of him, I keep close...

did he just create a modern 3d rendering plugin by itself just to realize this game.. Way to feel stupid.. One of my all time favourite games and the best coding and designing, all around effort ever done by an individual in the game industry.

This is a really cool postmortem. 1989! Not many games start that old, especially polygon-based. I've always loved Another World, but it's a very obscure title that most don't even know. I'm developing a steam game now and learned a few things, mostly not ignoring background/foreground, my game hook is on player actions/animation/performance

He talked a little more about anime influence on him. The little guy that runs away in the background of the first screen on the prison level uses the same lines to make it look fast, nust like in those Japanese Animes. Also, the big plasma shot is was inspired by Dragon Ball’s Kamehame.

I'm aware the story has probably nothing to do about sexual identity but as a teen playing this game at a time where LGBTQ representation in media was nearly nonexistent, this game was as close as it could get for me. The ending felt awesome at the time.
