Classic Game Room HD - OUTRUN for Sega Genesis

Classic Game Room HD reviews OUT RUN for the Sega Genesis video game console! Out Run is the Sega arcade classic hit designed by Yu Suzuki. This 16-bit conversion of OutRun on the Genesis looks and sounds brilliant. The Mega Drive handles the gameplay in a more solid way than the Sega Master System, although the Master System version remains excellent, just different. Here on the Genesis we get better graphics and smoother gameplay than the older SMS port which enhanced the arcade feel of this Megadrive game. Outrun on the Genesis has 4 songs instead of the standard 3, the car flips over and over and bodies fly out of it, the graphics on the side of the road have more detail. Out Run is an awesome arcade racer and and excellent driving game. Long before we were all obsessed with driving simulators like Gran Turismo 5 and Forza 2 there was Out Run (with several different arcade configurations like a stand up machine with steering wheel and a car shaped sit down machine that moved with the game). Millions of quarters were plugged into Out Run machines around the world giving us the chance to drive a Ferrari Testarossa convertible with a beautiful, shallow bimbo at our side. Ahhhh, the palm trees, smooth beats and blocky things over the road. OUT RUN! Classic Game Room serves up retro video game reviews for retro gamers and new video gamers alike. Best OutRun port of the era & still a great driving game to enjoy! :) It wasn't topped until the Saturn version but a special mention must go to the Game Gear version with its exclusive stages & versus modes.

Thats a really good version of Outrun! the best version I've got was the one released on the Sega Saturn which is an arcade perfect version of the game!

i love watching old classic game conversions. starting from outrun in the master system, the genesis, and then the arcade version. great review. wish you would do one for rastan. my favorite arcade game ever. mainly because it was so advance in graphics, sound and game play for its time.

Ace port. Wished it ran a little smoother, but it's all-around solid and plays just fine. Seeing the going rate for the game is kind of depressing though. Why is it so expensive, anyway? The 3DS OutRun arcade port is absolutely fantastic, so if you have one of those and want to play some OutRun, go download that.

If memory serves me right, to change Kph to Mph in the Master System version, you need to press the pause button on the title screen to bring up a secret menu screen. Actually a lot of MS games have secret option screens when you press pause. BTW, Speaking of secret MS stuff, have you thought of reviewing "Snail Maze" at all?

Seeing as you're on a Sega Saturn high, get yourself the Sega Ages disc. It features an arcade perfect port of Outrun, along with After Burner and Space Harrier.

One curious thing about this version is that the roadside objects and cars actually look better than the arcade's, as they are redrawn at various sizes rather than scaled in and out (courtesy of the Genesis' underpowered graphics chip having no scaling ability). Thus, they look smooth and detailed even when close-up, whereas they tended to get a bit blocky in the arcade version. However, they moved so much more smoothly, so I won't be switching versions any time soon ...

It hasn't changed much, except in the arcade and xbox (360) versions you are spending the majority of the time navigating through the side windows. Plus more cars, better graphics, and an online mode (X360) But the idea is the same.
