Classic Game Room reviews TOKYO XTREME RACER 1 for the Sega Dreamcast video game console. This old school review from back in the year 2000 looks at an excellent driving/gang warfare game on the Sega Dreamcast video game system. This game is so addictive you can't put it down. Race on the highway in a variety of cars that aren't real cars but sure as hell look like real cars from Toyota, Subaru, Nissan, Honda and Mazda. Race all over Japan's freeway system and compete against rival gangs in this extremely fun and well made arcade racer. You can rice-boy your car out with wings, body work and mufflers and all kinds of crap to make it go faster. It's like gang warfare without machine guns, just fast cars. If you like race car games like Forza 2 and Gran Turismo 5 but also like arcade racers then this game is right up your alley. It's a lot of fun and addictive, gameplay is solid and the footage shows this. In a chance to redeem ourself from the ill-fated Perfect Dark review that nobody liked, here's the Classic Game Room review show review of TOKYO XTREME RACER 1! Not Tokyo Extreme Racer, that has an "e" in it! We also reviewed Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2 in a separate review. Do you remember the rock band XTREME and "More Than Words?" Screw that! This is Tokyo XTREME Racer! XXXTREME!

They may not use the cars actual names but what they do use are the chassis codes for the respective cars

For example, JZA80 = Mk4 Supra RPS13 = 180SX S13, S14(Though they miss the Kouki S14) and S15 = Nissan Silvia (so on and so fourth)

Actual street racers in Japan refer to cars by chassis code anyway instead of production names. This eventually got them forced to pay licensing fees to the respective auto manufacturers.

Pretty solid looking game there. I like the power bars when you challenge another driver; when you flash your high beams at them. It would make the game better though if the cars did take damage since it is a "Xtreme Racer."

OK to all you ppl who try and compare Tokyo extreme racing to NFS and saying it wasn't the first need for speed underground 1 and 2 are the only NFS games similar to Tokyo extreme racing and both of thoughts came out well after this game. Even NFS undergrounds differ a bit. I personally think NFS has been garbage with exception to underground 2 all others stunk.

it sorta made sense, but it didn't answer my question. if txr1 for the ps2 is based from txr2 for dreamcast. and txrz for ps2 is a direct port of txr2 for dreamcast, then what is txr2 for ps2? is it an entirely new game?

TXR Drift is called Kaido Battle in Japan (Kaido Racer in Europe). The TXR series is called Shutokou Highway Battle in Japan. Not sure why in America they kept the TXR name for the touge games because it confuses everyone.

According to wikipedia: The very first Genki licensed game was Wangan Midnight for PlayStation 2 (28.03.2002) Before this they were all unlicensed look alike cars.

also the car you used in this review is a licensed car, its a 240sx in america, its a Nissan Silvia in japan, even though brand images arent shown, the model number is a licensed serial number. I thought the same thing as well with the damage and didnt know about the serial numbers until I started getting commsion jobs from overseas clients.

There is no TXR2 for the PS2. TXR1 is for the DC only. TXR2 was made for the DC and then ported over to the PS2 under the name TXR Zero. TXR3 was the next in line for the PS2. You may be thinking of TXR Drift 1 and 2 - those two were only named TXR so that American audiences would recognize them. they aren't actually part of the TXR story or sequels.

You are right and wrong. The 180sx is part of Silvia "Sisters". Hence why the S13 and PS13 had models released with different front bumpers and after the PS13 acquired fame from racers swapping out the front bumper to that of an S13, Nissan officially released the Sil-Eighty though it was not as powerful as an original 180sx.

@OZ2YOU And also Midnight Club was somewhat copied by that (First Midnight Club was released 2000 - 2001). MC was different from TXR, because MC had huge city maps not only freeways, but it lacked tuning until MC3. Both TXR and MC are great.

TXR Zero for PS2 was a port of TXR2 from the DC. TXR1 and TXR2 are very different games. Though they are similar because they are in the same series, the gameplay, Quest progression, handling, and bosses are completely different. So when you see TXR1 - you really can only compare it to TXR1. Did that make sense? Sorry if it didn't. :D
