kourii Neither of those are shoot-em-ups. If you count "shooter" in the most common use of the word, N64 has plenty of "shooters". Star Soldier VE is the *only* shoot-em-up released in the US for the N64.

n64 was one of those neglected consoles where i rather see games on than the ps1, though i own both. the loading times on the ps1 was what really killed me, which also caused me to play games on it over the ps1. it happened again a generation later with the ps2, where the gamecube loaded better and caused me to play that a bit more too.
@ivanorozco967310 жыл бұрын
your right i agree the n64 was indeed a neglected console and unfortuantly and unfairly been taken for granted by today standards from both critics and gamers alike

We have this game, but I didn't know much about it when I was little. Until I finally looked it up, and I'm surprised this is part of a series that dates back to 1986 or that it's a sequel to a game called Soldier Blade. This looks very fun to play and check out.

So.. does anyone know what the heck the plot is for this game? In my 16 or 17 years of having played this game and loving it every year, I've NEVER seen a manual or been able to find one online, and I've always wondered what background there is, minimal though it's likely to be. Now, I love coming up with my own plots for video games that don't have much of their own, but Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth, in addition to being one of its favorites, always seems to tease me with hints that there's a reason for things. The penultimate boss declares, "It seems as if you still do not understand... about the end of Earth." And that's always been true. There's no hint in-game as to why the aliens want to destroy Earth, and while so-called "Hidden Agenda Villains" are some of my favorites, I've always wondered what the truth was...

This game looks so so generic and then you play it a bit and there is just something in the way the game feels that makes it very enjoyable. As with all Star Soldier games it's a high score chaser's dream as it has a nice scoring system to master and lots of little secret bonuses to figure out. The old N64 graphics haven't aged too well (and modern TVs really don't do the N64 any favours either) but the gameplay has. I have the Japanese version which has all English menus - but the powerup tokens are graphically different from the US version for some reason.
@CrazyEnzo0310 жыл бұрын
Although this shooter is one of my favorites, it is stupendously easy to clear without dying, even on Master, in which the enemies have death bullets. The main point of this game is more or less to figure out how to rack up as many points as possible.

Not really surprising that the N64 didn't have many scrolling shooters, based on how this one looks graphically - it's a mess. It just wasn't easy to get things to look decent on the system, 2D or 3D, and people knew it even back then.
@retrosoul87706 жыл бұрын
Nothing to do with it, it's most likely more so because of the cart production. Developers weren't dumb, they knew scrolling shooters weren't very popular anymore in the late 90s so why spend more money developing for the more expensive N64 when you can save money by producing on Ps1 instead. If your game probably won't sell well it'd be better to cut production costs as much as you can. Raystorm on Ps1 looks comparable to this.

Yikes! Silpheed: Lost Planet on PS2 is one of the worst shooters ever. I have it and wish that I didn't but it's worth nothing because it sucks. Additionally this game is not that good either. If you want to play the game this one is trying to mimic play Raystorm on the PS1 because that game is actually good.
@StarFoxZX31510 жыл бұрын
I was trying to remember the name of this PS1 game, thanks. Also, what's wrong with Silpheed? I always found it to be great.
@OldsXCool10 жыл бұрын
StarFoxZX315 There was nothing really wrong with the original Silpheed on the PC and Sega CD. The sequel on the PS2 had ok graphics but the pace was just entirely too slow, especially the second stage. Plus if you die you need to go back to the beginning of those very long and boring stages. I don't have a problem going back if I die, but going all the way back through levels that put me to sleep is what I have a problem with. I really wanted to like Silpheed on the PS2, but it bored me to tears.
