Classic Game Room reviews the SUPERPAD 64 controller for the Nintendo 64. The Superpad 64 is a cheap aftermarket controller to buy if you need more controllers or replace broken or lost ones, but the Super Pad 64 for N64 is sub par at best.

I've had this controller since at least 2001, and I can say that I love it a lot more than the nintendo one. It just feels better in the hand IMO

There was another controller called the "Super Pad 64" (that was also made by Performance,) which was actually a more traditional shape. It really liked it, except the control stick was so sensitive that it made some games completely unplayable.

Here's my pros and cons on this controller... Pros + Good metal thumbstick, hand grips are spaced out, shoulder buttons are very nice, it works with all accessories "memory pak, rumble pak, and Transfer Pak", the cord length is a good amount on length, and the colors are very nice. Cons - Z trigger could break "there's a tab that gets loose on that, my advice is apply super glue on the tab before it gets too loose", the top of the thumb stick could come off "again, super glue may fix that", the face buttons aren't the best but certainly not the worst, and it's more thick than your average N64 controller but if you have big hands that could be a pro. Overall the Super Pad 64 by Performance gets a 6 out of 10, not the best 3rd party N64 controller but certainly not the worst.

@@supermariof0521 It has to do with the joystick itself. RE2 was also the last N64 game I played on actual hardware. The OEM N64 Joystick concaves down, while this joystick concaves up, which I think I actually preferred. I've never tried the GC replacement, nor another replacement. I also didn't mind the bulky shape, but I've also never tried out the D-Pad for RE/Kirby

Heh, my parents bought us a bunch of those. I don't use them anymore but if I all of a sudden had an N64 party at my house I'd take one for the team and use this while my friends got the real controllers. The Super Pad 8 for the Saturn I will defend as quite good though!

Sega had analog sticks available before Nintendo did, and they didn't introduce analog sticks. And in actuality, the stick on the N64 was digital, but worked like an analog.

thats great and all and I'm sure you did alot of thinking about it, but i think it comes down to is how well you adapt to a control scheme. for example, FPS games are supposedly more precise with mouse and keyboard, but that doesnt mean people cant be great at dual analog. plus if you're accustomed to a controller you might not feel right with a mouse. I've been playing the SF games with fightpads as I'm just now getting into. so of course I'm more at home with six buttons AND shoulder buttons.
@TVindustries5000
@TVindustries5000 11 жыл бұрын
yeeeup. yeah but the fightpads i use, use both extra buttons, a pretty good d-pad and shoulder buttons so i think it evens out a bit. also i love playing the N64 AKI Wrestling games with the n64 controller. it uses most of the c buttons and shoulder buttons, and the gameplay is more about planning moves instead of fast button presses so it works very well

I have a Superpad 64 "Colors" (In black) controller, to be honest, I find it more comfortable then the original controller, its thicker, so it fits my hands better and it feels less cramped, I play with it angled, so that my right hand straight, its actually really nice. But I can see people having issues with it, I personally like it.

I really don't have a problem with this controller. I honestly like the exclusion of the grips because I was always afraid they would get in the way if I needed the d-pad. (for some odd reason) And I really don't think that the buttons are a far-cry from the originals. I don't really care much for the c buttons.

I think the N64 controller was an excellent design, very ergonomic and the analogue stick is very responsive and easy to move. As a result it doesn't have the durability of other analogue sticks. The buttons were all well positioned and felt satisfying to press. The best controller design up till now has to be the GameCube wave-bird i reckon.

I have two of those controllers. One of them doesn't work, and I ended up breaking the Z button on the other one :( It's actually not so bad a controller, as the joystick is much more durable and once you get used to the thickness, it's odd to go back to the standard controller. I just wish I could fix them.

I actually like the shape better, what N64 game uses the D-pad, agree that the stick SUCKS, but at least it resets to neutral every time you let go, unlike any used Nintendo brand one, and the buttons work great, except for the Z button, which broke on both of my SuperPads. If it wasn't for the Z button, it'd be the only N64 controller I have.

Yeah well Nintendo didn't exactly make the best button layout for the Gamecube. But you make some very nice points, yes. I just wonder why they didn't have a second joystick for the camera on the N64 controller instead of the buttons. I still think it's weird that the N64 only has 2 action face buttons.
