it’s a traditional Irish folk ballad covered by many bands before Metallica, it’s usually sung much faster I’ve really come to love this take on it

@@officialmortiusThe "original"song is from 1650-ish (as you can imagine, lots of different versions with different lyrics have been floating around in the last 300+ years). If you want to hear the first modern LP record version, do a search for this title + Dubliners + 1960). Edited to Add: Colm McGuinness did a more traditional style cover. Which is, unsurprisingly, excellent.

I have never thought of this song as a part of Metallica's catalog. Though that is mostly because I have never heard it before. I'm more familiar with the more traditional Celtic sound of this song.

Yeah. The Metallica hit would be from Garage Inc which was a double album of all covers, if memory serves.

Another great arrangement from the man, the king, the legend Geoff who outdid himself with his chest range here! I love this version and could listen to Eli`s Belts and Omar`s riffs in this all day long. Please support these guys and give this more views!

The first time I heard this old Irish tune (1650 or so) was by Celtic Thunder, VoicePlay's rendition is a bit different but, both are excellent. The song is about a highwayman, his "lady", and her betrayal of him. BTW Whack means to take a drink or shot of whiskey. It was his breath.

I admit: as someone who was raised on the Crunchy Granola genre of Folk Music, and the folk revivals of the 1950s and '60s, it took a while for me to warm up to this one. But after about the third listen, it's been sitting comfortably between my ears. Not mind-blowing, but an earworm that I don't mind at all (especially the lines where Cesar sings lead)

I have loved this for many years. I mostly heard it sung by Irish groups. I have come to love this version too. I agree with your 'nitpicking' in the beginning. I was a bit distracted by that too, but overall I was delighted by the performance.

I was iffy about whether I wanted to watch their cover of this song because I have a deep deep love for the more traditional versions of it (The Dubliners is my favorite) but I also very much love the Metallica cover as well and I wasn't sure what version VP was going to lean toward and if I would be too invested in either version to enjoy their rendition. I'm so glad I listened. I think it might be my new favorite take on the song. It feels like they found a good balance of tradition and new school. I could absolutely hear someone getting blasted and singing this version in my local pub, but I could also totally hear someone throwing in a guitar and riffing along with it in a setlist for a rock band. Also...this is one of my favorite videos they've shot style-wise. Especially Eli. Dear lord. P.P.S. This was the cover where I realized I couldn't decide if I wanted J. None or Omar as the permanent 5th member. Either would be an absolute treasure. Actually, can we just have 6 members?

This was considerably different than the version I remember. I’m pretty sure that I heard Peter Paul and Mary sing it eons ago on television show. It has to be at least 20 years since I’ve heard this. It took me a minute to recognize it because it’s so different. It took me a few times listening to it to truly appreciate it and now I can’t get it out of my head. I really like the slower cadence of this. I don’t have a hearing problem per se, but I have trouble processing things auditorily. If the lyrics go by too fast I can’t comprehend them. I think that’s one of the reasons I enjoy a cappella so well. Because there isn’t a lot of interference a.k.a. musical accompaniment by instruments, to distract me from the lyrics. I am one of those people who if I read it I’ve got it down pat if I hear it, it goes right out my right out of my brain. So the slower pace and the lack of accompaniment makes this much more approachable for me. That might be why I remember the Peter Paul and Mary version over any of the others.

My Irish grandma loved this song, although the lyrics she sang were VERY different, with the girl named Jenny (to rhyme with "it was a pretty penny") sabotaging the pistols, and at the end the guy beats up his jailers and escapes prison to go find his brother in the army. Folk songs are like that, always evolving.

I love VoicePlay's version of this! I first heard it sung by The Irish Rovers when it came out on their album in the early '70s, who sang it much faster, and more like you'd expect of a pub song.

This is not a Metallica cover. This is a very old Irish folk song (from the 1600s based on an Irish highwayman - maybe Patrick Fleming) that became more known in the late 1960s performed by the Highwaymen and the Dubliners and then in the early 1970s by Thin Lizzy. The Metallica cover was a more hardcore take on the original (obviously), but this is more close to the roots.

I actually never heard this song before so I can't compare VoicePlay's rendition to any other but I have no doubt that theirs is the one I would prefer, except maybe if I was to hear it sung in a pub in Ireland with a glass of whiskey in my hand LOL!

I think some of the unexpectedness in this is because so many folks expect a Metallica cover instead of a "Whiskey in the Jar" cover. They did use the Metallica version of the lyrics, but I feel they harkened back more to the 'traditional' version of the song for pulling in the harmonies. It feels much more like the Irish folk song, but updated (possibly the notes of the fiddle part for those harmonies?).
@parkerbrown-nesbit1747
@parkerbrown-nesbit1747 Жыл бұрын
No, they've turned it into pop pap. The harmonies are gorgeous, yes, but that's it's only good point.

@hwyla4416
@hwyla4416 Жыл бұрын
@@CapriUni I was more saying that it is more traditional Irish than Metallica. I would not call it an 'actual' folk song. As I said 'updated' not finally traditional. And yes, Cesar did add a rather bluesy touch to it. But those harmonies (to me) seem to come from more traditional harmonies.

I loved the way they look in this too, from the first viewing. But musically, this one took some time to grow on me, as other commenters mention. And it's not one of my favorites. But the singing and arrangement is really exceptional, it's the song itself that is kind of so-so for me. Also, totally off topic, but that is the most patriotic brick wall I've ever seen! (Not a sentence I ever thought I'd hear myself say. Or see myself say. Or something.)

I came into this having the Thin Lizzy version in my head, though I’ve heard a lot of versions cause I used to be in a Celtic band. I do prefer the song itself with a bit more tempo and drive behind it, as it’s often done. But approaching this as just a ‘voiceplay cover’, I really enjoy this version too

Personally, I grew up listening to the thin lizzy version of this song. When Metallica, whom I LOVE, did their cover of this song, I hated it at first. It took me a few times listening to it for it to grow on me. I think Voiceplay has done a great job of blending the two versions together and putting their own spin on it. Once again, it took me a couple of times listening for it to grow on me, but now I can't get it out of my head. ❤

yes Voiceplay did a nice job of the song and i like it.. But i grew up on the Irish version vs the version Thin Lizzy brought to the states then Metallica covered Originally this is irish folk song .. I prefer Jenny stealing the rapier and filling the Pistol chargers with water .. then she called in Captain Farrel. Thin Lizzy changed it to Molly and her not disarming him and being able to shoot Captain Farrell The problem i have with the americanized version is it still contains the lyrics of the devil take that woman for she tricked me.. but in thin lizzy's version the line is there but she dose not trick him.. she takes him to bed again... Voiceplay did a great job.. but for me i grew up on the traditional Irish version s it sounds off every time i hear the americanized version and the changes that are only half done. Sorry for the rant.. but to me at least the Irish version makes more sense then the americanized version.

I think that because this song has been around for the last 300+ years in some form or other, a lot of people were expecting something much closer to the version that they knew or liked best. I had zero expectations when I first heard VP’s version because I didn’t already know it, and I like it very much. For me, it’s the harmonies that impress me and I keep wanting to hear them again. The whole song has become an earworm for me, and if VoicePlay gives you an earworm, then it’s a very good earworm, indeed.
