man I remember when CSGO first came out and we were all excited that valve was giving us a much needed update. Now, years later, we have an out-of-date matchmaking system, broken anti-cheat measures, anti-toxicity measures that increase toxicity, and game changes that make the game shorter (harder to strategize and talk with teammates, but also less time to be toxic I guess...) valve needs a solid kick in the ass

EA needs to please their shareholders, and shareholders don't know anything about videogames or videogame communities, so lots of EA changes don't reflect what the community wants or needs (look at battlefield for example). Valve has never had this problem, so they've always been perceived as being better than a greedy publicly traded company like EA, but the state of their games and their lack of community support has started to speak against this. I'm not sure they've done anything for the community (excluding esports communities) since launching portal 2 honestly

@@cate01a It's because they decided to mod a game that had very little modding support to begin with. The game also updated frequently and on top of that broke everything after every update. Outside of maps, Valve simply doesn't want you to mess with the game and wouldn't want to give support for something that might leech players from CSGO/CS2. It's always fascinating seeing talented people waste their time doing projects like these when they could have just made a counter strike clone in Unreal engine in less time with less restrictions while even having the possibility to monetize it.

its essentially different ideas, csco is completely based off csgo, while hdtf is a brand new game. where csco need csgo's source code to proceed the development, but valve did similar thing in 2020 and turned tf2 in to malware at the time which hackers can install virus to players's pc through tf2. and it left behind is limitless auto cheat bots.

The early-2000's scene was great- it was full of very talented digital artists who devoted hours and even days into free mods, for other people to enjoy. Little did we know, the greed would overcome our enjoyment and companies would introduce shitty concepts like bad, unrealistic "skins" into modern games and introduce it as microtransactions. We made skins to improve our game enjoyment, and we did it for free. You can still see some of this in CS 1.6 today for community maps like in "m3 Servers"

Unfortunately, just today Valve modified their modding FAQ in response to Team Fortress 2 Classic and Open Fortress; outside of giving the middle finger to those two mods and saying that sourcemods can basically never be punished on Steam from here on out, they said they're basically never gonna give out licenses "outside of extraordinary circumstances". Valve can be both so great to modders, hiring them in the past and allowing mods on the steam store, but then can also be lame about other mods like when they reached out to the team fortress fan projects open fortress and team fortress 2 classic suggesting they work together and then after they end up disabling their downloads they were ghosted by valve for months. Its almost as if after reaching out Valve realized how much effort they would have to put in and instead decided to do nothing. Its very disappointing for all the modders and fans involved. I hope that classic offensive can get access to the source code but recent events have me feeling very pessimistic.

The blocking of source code access is quite a logical decision on their part, after the whole TF2 source code leak. I remember checking Classic Offensive in 2016 and was amazed on how Zool achieved the perfect blend of 1.6 and CSGO in this mod. Even before this, I always played (and still do) his Zombie Extermination mod for CS Source and it was so fun. Classic Offensive done the 1.6 remake right unlike CSPromod to which got abandoned and overshadowed when CSGO came out and it ceased further development in 2014. Zool is definitely the best modder for Counter-Strike, from his early work in CS Source to adding cut stuff to the game such as the C4 from the trailer or adding the MP5 before its official release for CSGO to pushing things hard for Classic Offensive and of course Noble Strike.

I make mods for Gmod and I can tell you the anxiety you get when releasing a mod is real. You only have a short period after you release it for it to gain traction, and if anything is wrong or broken much of that precious time could be lost fixing issues you overlooked. It's to the point where I have mods that are mostly complete that I'm afraid to release due to a few outlying issues that I don't know how to fix and would potentially get in the way of it being a good mod. I got alot of respect for him not quitting a pushing forward in spite of these setbacks and issues, it takes alot of grit and determination to stay in the ring and keep wrestling with the Source Spaghetti Monster, and it's so much greater when you come out on top in spite of his noodley appendages.

When I started modding for the first time, I used the ModDB version of CSCO as a base. My starting ground. I've learned lot and it was pretty easy to edit stats and everything when I started. Years later, I moved on to MIGI and here I am, making mods to this day for CSGO. I hope that CSCO will be finished someday and hopefully will be a starting ground for future modders to come.

Honestly, Valve is acting cold hearted and greedy about this. I get that its their property, their rights etc etc. But if they honestly think something this niche is going to affect their bottom line in any noticeable or meaningful way, they are high out of their minds. People that want to play something like this don't care about what makes Valve money in the 1st place, Skins and Loot Boxes. These people just want a classic old school experience. Not to mention Valve has made BILLIONS of dollars on CSGO over the years and it still remains huge to this day, with very little to no effort from them. Ah... this reminds me of the times when game devs poured their minds and souls into their videogames and created such masterpieces that, back then, reinvented whole genres. Metal Gear Solid, Bioshock, Shadow of the Colossus, GTA San Andreas, Fallout New Vegas and much more. Zool is refreshing, he truly is. There's something about this video that made me feel sort of sad. The points Zool pointed out, the need for a polished product at launch, the lack of ingenuity of people in modern day of gaming trying to solve a problem or expand what they like, and valve's rejection of other parts of the community that they deem I guess unworthy. Really goes to show how the culture of gaming has changed and as stated in the video, there's a lack of a growing community. While writing this comment a sudden sad thought came. More modern games are phasing out the tools that can easily create an organic community making people have to work harder to make these connections. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, that through all the smoke of my darkest days I had people that I was able to experiences things with. Didn't think I would get teary over a video about a mod that i played 5 years ago.

this is great! one of my the biggest reasons i dont like playing the old ones are the buy menu, sounds dumb but its really clunky to me despite beeing used to other weird old game mechanics and stuff. but yeah, good job and good luck to the developers!

I remember when I played Classic Offensive on Faceit at some point. It was an awesome time and I thought it was pretty much finished even at that point. Amazing to see the work put into this mod and how far they've progressed. I really hope they get the support from valve that they need to get this up and running. Would be awesome to have a fun, less serious place to pop some heads and make new friends :)

Stuff like this is what makes me so incredibly glad that TF2 Classic is possible because of the source code getting leaked. As much bad came out of it getting leaked we have incredible mods like that that the community can easily install and play.

I've tried CS:CO a few years ago as a demo mod, and I enjoyed it. Nice to see Philip covering the mod as Zool and the team definitely deserved it. Hope one day it releases!

Ppl lost interest to csco even before cs2 release so the project is dead... It was obvious, most ppl didnt grow up with 1.6 to even care

Good video, didn't know about this. There was also the CS Promod back in the day when 1.6 was kind of dying out but they didn't accept cs source so they wanted a mix between the two.

There's something uplifting, yet sombre about this story. I also work very slowly on my projects, wanting them to be released in as perfect a state as possible before moving on to the next one. Since I actively choose to only work on solo projects, this works out great for me. But for Zool, where this project applies to other people? It's a bit sad that the likely, realistic outcome is that it won't get a license and even if it did, it likely wouldn't be very popular unfortunately. But regardless, the amount of work and effort Zool has put in to get around just about every single barrier he's run into is extremely impressive and totally reflective of how determined he is to see it succeed in his vision, and his stubbornness to defeat. I hope it succeeds, for his sake.

As a big fan of osrs and knowing how big classic wow has gotten, I can see classic cs absolutely popping off, if valve sponsors this (as they did with original cs) I can see a whole community exploding here! I never played css or 1.6 but i will definitely give this a go

I’ve never played 1.6 or Source. I love CS:GO but have come to the opinion that the current gameplay is not fun. What is fun about CS:GO is the feeling of improving and winning but not the game itself. I think I have started to feel this way due to the hyper competitive focus. I like the competitive aspect of the game but it feels like that is the only thing there. After watching this video, and Warowl’s video, a mod like this seems it would add a much needed layer to CS. Some people may not agree with me but this is just my take after 1300+ hours in CS:GO and it being my main game of choice since 2019.

There's only so much perfect smoke lineups and flash combinations you can throw before the game becomes bland and Boring. Only thing really keeping csgo alive aside from the 2 tiny gameplay updates a year if you're lucky is skin-ponzinomics.

I would love to think that this game gets approved and that modders are allowed access to source engine code. But... I've known Valve since 1.6. I know what kind of company they are these days, and so does the rest of the CS community. It's a foolish hope. I feel that Valve would never approve this... I wish they would, but they probably won't.

We should really put a petition for letting this project happen and "finish". Just like Counter Strike was moded off. This could truly become a great finished project and would create great variation for the community for CS. I could even imagine tournament organises could be used in pro scenes, even if, it was used for fun, it could make variations and great entertainments. Go CS:CO!

Just curious, why doesn’t valve consider acquiring the Classic Offensive intellectual property from Zool and make it an official game? I believe that’s what they did back in 1999 when they purchased the original Counter Strike intellectual properties from Jess Cliffe and Minh Lee. In the past 5-10 years we’ve seen many remakes/remasters of popular games from the past and do really well. I understand it’s a lot more difficult than it sounds, but it’s just a thought I have.

COs support will wain if it becomes a micro transaction vehicle and so Valve would be just be splitting the player base between a profitable one and loved one.
