Ingredients
1 pound ground beef 75-80% lean
1 cup potato flakes or combination potato flour and potato flakes combined
salt and pepper to taste
cooking oil enough to cover the patties for frying
Instructions
Begin heating oil on medium heat to 350℉
Combine the ground beef, potato flakes and salt and pepper in a bowl. Mix thoroughly to evenly distribute the potato flakes into the beef.
Form the mixture into 3 or 4 patties. They don't need to be perfect and they don't need to be super thick - remember, we're talking 1917 here.
Once the oil reaches 350℉, carefully add the patties to the oil and fry for about 3 minutes on each side. You want to cook the meat through and form a light crust on the outside.
Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels just a few minutes. Serve hot and to be authentic, serve on a steamed bun with the original fixings of mustard, dill pickle slices and onion.
Thank you very much for watching. Please don't forget to like, comment, share, and definitely subscribe.
👍😁❤

If this was Ordinary Sausage the burger would be at least 50% real slug. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

I purchased the "ground beef" from Walmart. So it probably is 47% crickets. My apologies. 👍😊❤️

My dad would made something similar. Instead of mashed potato flakes, he used grated potatoes. He would also grate some onion.

Yeah, not a bug but a slang name for a nickle size metal slug, used to fool machines into accepting the slug instead of a nickle or quarter. So they are calling it, kinda fake. Looked good though..

@maryblushes7189 this recipe is actually from the 1930s. During that time slug was slang for a nickel. These burgers were sold for a nickel. Hence the name slug burger. 👍😁❤

@MelonieTriesRecipes my granny was born in 1898 and daddy in 1927 so I actually am familiar with the time and, yes, even slugs. Some slugs worked as quarters😘 and were good in coin operated telephones as well as parking meters. 😁 I know cause I did as a kid. Most recipes such as these lasted into the 1960s as thrifty food was still popular during WWII, post war 1950s and the early 60s. American style goulash was filling, meat streaching, cheap and yummy too. You could feed an entire family using a half pound of ground meat! There were lots of these recipes, mock apple pie that really did taste like apple pie, but not an apple in it, just ritz crackers snd spices etc. So many yummy things. Slum gullion is another 😘

Yeah. This is a very old school recipe. A nickel was referred to as a slug. So, in the 1930-1940s this burger cost a nickel. 👍😁❤
