CLASSIC VW 1972 SUPER BEETLE REWIRE, FUEL GAUGE, SPEDO ( INTRO )

Here we go again. This is the next step in rewiring our classic 1972 vw super beetle. This will work on most beetle from 1971-1979. This is a 113 model. It has the rear headed glass.
We will be going wire by wire on the back of the spedo.. We will also be dealing with the fuel sending unit. Wire by wire explination including the bulbs.
This will be broken up into 2 videos a piece. The first will be the wire diagram( classroom), the second will be on the car ( hands on ). I will be listing all the mm to guage conversion in all the videos. We will be using the Bently manual to use all the factory wire color as it was built from factory.
Stay tuned for another great in depth series on the rewire of the spedo. If i miss somthing or something was not clear comment below. Iwill make a correction, or explain it more in detail.I try and make this as easy as possible. Six months ago i would not have even tried to attempt an electrical. The more hands on the easier it gets. This really is plug and play. Match the wire up and there you go.If i can do it , i know you can.

@@Volkswagenplanet I have a 74 super beetle and I am scared to thing on my own but I trying or going to try not a lot of time right now working two jobs but I need to change my dash lights so I can see the speedometer at night whoever had it before me did a lot of splicing and replaced speaker wires so I don't know where they're going to I have like six wires going to the positive side of the battery but at all works except my high beams need to clean it up and organize thank you for your help

If you need wiring diagran, you can follow this series, I will be going wire by wire with the correct gauge wire if need to replace wire, I usually do one wire a video. If you need a wire diageam jbugs is the one I use. Its factory correct and color coded correct. Stay tuned for the series. I usually set my videos at 10 pm e.s.t. I'm in Tampa, FL. Sound good John, the 1969 beetle i got this year they pulled all the guages out for painting the car infact I have the spedo in the house, needed it for title transfer and plates info. I can have it in my hands while watching your video.. Not sure yet when i can get back at the vw's go to doctors today and Friday mabe I will get an estimasted time frame..hope it is before the snow flys in Iowa.

Thats crazy. You needed it to verify mileage? In Florida if the car is older than 10 years or over 100k miles the state marks it exempt on mileage. My 93 suburban I had the county sheriff come outside to verify the odometer. This was about 5 years ago. Didnt have to, but. My family bought it new. Have you ever rebuilt a spedo before. If yes that would be a good video or turn it into a series. You could sit down for that one. Hope your having good days, rather than bad

Thanks for your wonderful videos. Iam having trouble with the fuel Guage on my 1972 beetle, it does not read correctly. It does not have a vibrator, not sure if it did have one before I bought it. My question is : is it absolutely necessary to have a vibrato or is there a way around that.

That is a great question. The answer is yes. You must use one with the stock ( original ) gage. The vibrator is what moves the needle that reads what's in your tank. I will.explain this as it was explained to me. The fuel in your tank is measured by a fuel sending unit which is mechanical. The movement is picked up on the negative wire going back to.the fuse box. Then it powered ( electrical) to the vibrator which registers the frequency that shows up on your gas guard. Then it sends the power back to fuel sending unit to.complete the circuit. I may have not used the exact by.the book, but looking at mine that is how mine is wired. I'm glad the videos helped you out. I learned a lot myself doing that series. I was scared to death of electrical, now it's not that intimidating at all. Please feel free to ask any question you may have. We also have a facebook page as well. I have a 1970 Volkswagen Beetle dune buggy. Unfortunately it's got homemade wiring and I don't have a generator light on it. It does have a generator and a voltage regulator Does it need to have the generator light hooked up to charge ? If so how does the generator light get hooked up ( where does it start and where does it go )

im having trouble getting ground to my australian 1974 beetle. I have power to horn ring wire but cant get earth to column since i put new upper bearing plastic bush on column.I can make it sound on indicator and wiper alloy mount but not on column, so i cant make a connection sound with horn push button. Thats about as clear as i can make it sound. Cheers from down under.

Hey John -I have a problem with 74 superbeetle ( older guy here w lots of vw experience…but -). -when I turn key to on position blinkers on speedo go continually -without me putting the blinkers on. Blinkers work -all lights everything good -emerg flasher works /relay good. What is causing the dang thing to immediacy flash on the speedo as soon as turn on ??? ( engine on or off ).

HMMMMM? I'm no expert on this topic, but the first thing I would do is grab a copy of a 74 wire diagram. Then trace the wires from the headlight switch to the ends of the wires locations. Meaning headlight, blinker relay and so on. It appears you have a constant power issue. All those items you mention get the power fron the headlight switch. I know it's not a perfect answer, but a truthful answer. Grab a test light and go wire to wire off the headlight switch. I did cone across a headlight relay ( aftermarket) switch, that had a jumper. It had to be split to receive power to the relay. That did kick me flashers on as you mentioned. I've also had the same issue if the headlight switch was for a different year. Yes it will work. I used the diagram from a company called " JBUGS". Its free. I just started a Facebook VW group page as well. Check it out.
