Thanks to your recommended procedure (and a bit of penetrating lubricant) I have claimed victory vs some decades old piece of Bakelite. Now I can finally finish replacing the fuel pump.

I watched this video before I went to put a mechanical fuel pump on my wifes 74 bug, (she bought it with an electric pump in it) and lo and behold thats exactly what I had to deal with. With absolutely no cussing and swearing I got it out, put in the mechanical pump, and it runs a lot better.. Thanx for the video, it saved me from yelling out alot of 4 letter words.. lol

As just a suggestion. I use a tap, and a small piece of metal conduit or pipe. Along with two washers. One on the top and one on the bottom to help support the pipe. As I screw the bolt down it makes contact with the pipe, tightens the whole mess up and pulls the broken section out. This eliminates the hammer and vice grips.

well done Chris!,this is exactly what happens to my pump riser block,I sanded the replacement on the lower part to fall freely into the case to prevent the fuel rod from grabbing once hot!

Hi Chris- I think you have done a fine job on most of your videos I have watched. This last one about the fuel pump base is alot better than the last time i did it. But building on what you have here- after you tapped the hole for the shaft, if you would have put a beefy flat washer and a spacer of some sort on the bolt you probably could have just used the bolt to jack the broken part out as long as you had enough thread of the bolt in the broken stand. Thanks for the quality vidoes.

Good to know! I just replaced mine because it was leaking and seemed warped where it meats the engine. Luckily it came out in one piece. Thanks for your videos! They have been a big help keeping my baby 65' on the road.

Is it leaking oil or benzine ? I smell benzine leak from bottom. But there shouldnot be sny benzine at that place right ?

Okay, weird thing....I got most of the pieces out, and looked in and didn't see anymore, so I figured the rest of the tip broke and fell down into the engine like you said it might. I put in the new stand and it only goes 2/3rds of the way in! I look again, all it is metal that blocks the way...what happened?

Great Video Chris - my stem has also snapped / clean break around the upper oil hole - I'm wondering if i should risk it disintegrating - the bottom piece is stuck in - its tapered as it enters the hole down in there - it has the rod through it - is it gonna go anywhere once the top is clamped back down ? ok to leave it ?
@classicvwbugs Жыл бұрын
it has to come outta there, can't leave it. if it goes in the block, let it sit overnight and maybe next day oil change it will drop out.

Do you know if the flange for the alternator style is the same as the generator style fuel pump? I got a new one today and it "protrudes" from the bottom a lot more, trying to figure out if the wrong fuel pump has been on my bug. Thanks.
@classicvwbugs Жыл бұрын
you mean the base? I think they are the same.

Husband was getting the flange that broke out like u said. He hit the distributor knocking one on the clips off of course it fell in the hole where the flange goes. Any idea how to get it out? Will draining the oil help? Have not cranked the car as we are scared to

Chris, I've done a similar thing but my bolt was longer and I put a large lug nut on the bolt shaft and made like a slide hammer. I gripped the nut with vise grips banged it up and down. Great minds think alike. Thanks Ron

Haha, that is another way too. We think alike for sure! The good thing is, nothing is set in stone, we can all be creative.

@umitakbey81874 жыл бұрын
Hey chris. Does the remaining piece work as it is ?? Or do you really need a new plastic base ? I just broke my at the same place, and started the engine. It worked but the stoped after few minutes. Dont know if the problem is the pump or this.piece.
@classicvwbugs4 жыл бұрын
I would get a new base, yeah.

Hello Chris , great videos , my 1975 beetle starts first time when cold and runs great but when you try to restart engine when it is hot it won't . it turns over but will not fire up until it has cooled down for about an hour , do you have any ideas why it would do this and how i could remedy it , kind regards Liam

Chris...any idea buddy? To pull out the rod and base?
@classicvwbugs6 жыл бұрын
I would soak the rod first with some penetrating oil or WD-40. Once the rod comes out, you need to cut some threads into the base that is still stuck in the block, then use a long bolt to screw into the base then pull it out.

Tried everything to get the remaining half piece out and did not succeed. Eventually broke into small pieces inside and let it fall down inside. What is the consequences of this? Will it fall into the oil and I can get it out on a oil change?
@classicvwbugs Жыл бұрын
it is a soft material, it really will not do too much harm, drain the oil, it usually falls to the bottom of the block.

thanks Chris's, I'm in Australia and got a 69 bug (steel dash, ball joint/disc brake) ..I've got this problem now! motor was stalling out like a vapor lock, so I noticed it could be that shaft grabbing and on trying to remove to sand the housing it broke...now I want to get it out and just buy the base, I'm searching for that part now..thanks for all your vids mate, they are going to help me and so many restore our cars..God Bless you guys for sharing all these secrets you have learned..

Something tells me millions of people chewed up plenty of these without having a clue they did. The internet comes along and puts everyone into a panic over something that was obviously taken into consideration when the motor was engineered and continued to use for decades.

Great video. Mine broke off and the tap is a great idea. Thanks
@MistressDragonFlame11 жыл бұрын
Would possibly a cork screw work? Since the tap just makes a hole with threads, a solid screw might grab better.
@classicvwbugs11 жыл бұрын
Well you are tapping threads into what is left of the fuel pump stand that is stuck in the motor block. Not sure a cork screw will work, but a big bolt like I used was good.

hey Chris i had a question i have a 1600cc duel carburetor single port I'm no getting any fuel in the carburetor. So first thing i did was check my fuel pump and lines and noticed with the new fuel pump the lever was very stiff. is it suppose to be stiff? it was very stiff where i had to use both my fingers to press it down. i just bought it and was already not working hours after i installed it. I'm starting to think it's just the fuel pump because it says it was made in china. i need a german right?
@classicvwbugs7 жыл бұрын
