Hi Chris, Just a quick note to thank you for doing these videos. I cant believe every step is laid out to restore or build a bug. I had several bugs as a teen, (40+ years ago) and Ive been wanting to get another to restore as a daily driver. Now it looks like I have all I need to get the job done. Thanks again

Chris, what type of grease or lube do you recommended for the gears inside the VDO, and what type of grease do you recommended where the speedo mates with the cable? thanks you!

Any basic grease works.

Thank you so much I took the gage apart from my 63 bug and cleaned it very well and had grease the gears and put new gels in. I didn't know what glue to use except plastic model airplane glue my brother had. It wasn't the greatest, but it works, now im not blinded by a little 12volt bulb. Lol

@@gravityTattdrumr11 i believe it was wheel bearing grease, it was so long ago i can't be certain. Still loving the my car though.

I just restored a speedometer after watching Chris here's videos. I did everything the way he talked about and it came out beautiful! However upon reassembling the "glass and bezel" back onto the "case" the edges of the bezel crimped and slipped and I ended up scratching the speedo dial :( But it still looks like new. Just be very careful on reassembly. I bend the bezel "clip" a little less aggressive and it slid on with no problem. (Sorry about the bad description moral is be careful!) I also changed the indicator lenses with a red plastic bingo chips from made by Bicycle. And green sense from a staples page tab.

Hey Chris, My 1968 Ghia's speedometer is different than this. All the indicator gels are inside the housing. It appears the speedometer needle needs to be removed to gain access to the gels... How does the speedometer needle come off? Even vertical pressure?

Hey Chris, I recently pulled out the turn signal bulb, I put it back in and does not turn on at all. I can hear the relay clicking when I take the bulb out and place it to exposed metal the bulb works, I suspect a ground issue. The other instrument lights are working fine but can’t get this little guy to turn on and off within the bulb housing. Any suggestions? I noticed the metal that goes through the inside of the bulb thinking maybe it’s just bent to far down?

What do you do if they have a noise around 45 miles a hour in the car? I took some break cleaner into where the speedo cable goes. It helps for a while but than that annoying sound comes back. Have you gone thru this before?

Try some grease on the cable. Unscrew from the speedo and pack a little grease down it, then screw back on.

Not just any grease, but a small, tiny dab with a tooth pick of Luberplate on the exposed gears and 1 drop of Triflow liquid lube on the rear of magnet shaft, not inside where the cable goes, but right between the brass or metal bushing that holds the magnet shaft to the speedo frame. Of key importance.

Chris, the speedo you're restoring here appears to be all gear driven. Is there another type with a spinning magnet and torsion spring or is that just part of the mechanism that wasn't serviced in the video. BTW, your videos are great and really informative.

Eastwood got a range of spray paints specially formulated to look exactly like the original new metal treatment If that's important for the restoration. The simulated cadmium plating paint gives great results, in my experience, just like brand new. Worth checking out.

Nice video man! I have a 70's beetle and when i drive, the speedo doesnt tell me how fast im going, it stays at zero and ive made sure everything is hooked on properly. Could you help me?
@indiodeoro9 жыл бұрын
+guerrerokidd210 : If you don't get response from Chris maybe the problem is the internal mechanism that is frozen because the grease that came from factory protecting the moving parts was gone long time ago, and some WD40 on them for sure doesn't go to fix properly the problem; I can fix your speedo or take as core for another one in working condition. Great video Chris. Any particular type of grease used on the gears, etc?
@oldmancrow66768 жыл бұрын
Michael Britt I think lithium grease would probably work best or electronics grease. I wouldn't use heavy duty grease, it's too messy and it's just not the right grease for this application. just my two cents.
