Very nice job! My first car was a 64 bug. I did not appreciate it then as I would now. Thanks

The "cruddy looking engine" was mostly exterior dirt from sitting in storage, and not being cleaned for many years. This original engine did not have many miles on it and had a very strong lower end with no play. The engine oil was quite clean, and the engine was rolled over many times while in storage. The case had no leaks or hairline cracks either. We believe this engine will be great for many years to come! Thanks for your comment! John Nizman

Looks like you got your pistons in backwards. Those arrows are supposed to point at the front of the engine not the front of the car. When it comes back with siezed rings you can split the case while you're waiting for your new jugs and pistons to arrive in the mail.

The pistons are in right. The arrow on the pistons point to the fly wheel.

I've looked at this video again and I noticed that the new pistons fitted to this motor were 87.95 and not 85.45, which makes this motor a 1679 and not a 1585. Aren't these big bore slip-in jugs prone to warping and galling over time?

hi there John from Australia here. What was the 'silvering' treatment you did to the new muffler and the heater channels?

I heard these engines were easy to service but there was one huge problem with them. They have one part that is very hard to locate or very expensive to buy because its so rare. They say if you are going to by a VW bug to check if that part in question is in good condition before buying. I don't remember what part it was they were talking about but it is an important part of the car.

If the motor has one last chance then I wouldn't be rebuilding it.
@atyourserviceable11 жыл бұрын
You might think it looks pretty but that is one half assed rebuild to say the least, a 15 year old kid could do a better job of it.If the case is never opened and the main and cam bearings are never replaced and the crank and cam have never been refinished or miked ,then what was the use of the rebuild if half the engine is forgotten . I also suppose the oil sludge that has been built up over the years just got up and walked out of the crank case . Great work for a weekend warrior but not a pro.

I like vw engine re-vamp video, but I have a question. Why didn'y you guys go all the way and spit the case? A top-end rebuild on such a cruddy looking engine is only asking for teouble down the line IMHO.

Too bad no verbal or text commentary...I also think you should have checked the crank bearings...nice pics. thanks!

U had the motor out and on the bench and you didn't crack open the cases? What the FUCK MAN!!!
@atyourserviceable11 жыл бұрын
How could you possibly know if you never cracked open the crank case? Did you magna flux the cases for cracks,or was it just visual. What condition were the main bearings in or cam bearings if you never opened the case? Thats like saying to a girl I know whats under your skirt and never taking the time to check it out .Who gives a shit how good it looks if it doesnt survive 5000 miles before disintegrating .And yeah I have rebuilt many beetle engines.If i worked that way I would have been fired

1/2 SOLA
@marianosales269 жыл бұрын
Why did you think it was made a 1/2 sola work? :/
@andrehenke27149 жыл бұрын
Paulo Mariano Obviousy the engine was not well taken card of. If I would repair an engine like this I would dismantle it completely and this is not the case. They just cleared up the dirty parts and the center of the engine, like crankshat, was left behind, and this confirm my previous statement -> 1/2 sola!

Even if the play on the rods and main bearings feel fine, believe me they wear out, they start showing the brass color, specially on the rod bearings, I did mine all inside and even if all was in standard size it did showed the brass little bit, I did replace all main and rod bearings, press out the gears and all that good stuff, is becoming a brand new engine now....not like this one.

Thats not rebuilding an engine you never looked at your crankshaft if you restore all you engines like this i would never want one!!
@vicvan15517 жыл бұрын
Exactly, I went all inside my self and replaced all the main and rod bearings, it did not need to be machine, I was lucky, all was in standard size, put all together and shim it, is becoming an almost brand new engine, maybe I am not putting all that fancy chrome stuff, but is all painted and clean, all in specs.
