Exactly. The resolution of this song is deliberately unconvincing in order to leave the mood hanging in mid air, but then Can I Play With Madness kicks in with a major key and it takes care of the problem. This is the issue when you listen to the tracks from a very progressive album in isolation from each other.
@TheCyberMantis
@TheCyberMantis 3 жыл бұрын
@@pentagrammaton6793 So TRUE. It's just 1 piece of the overall puzzle. This is why you need to listen to some albums from start to finish, so you can hear how they flow from one song, into the next. A perfect example of this is: SYMPHONY-X "V".
@marcvolgers8352
@marcvolgers8352 3 жыл бұрын
I think that's debatable. From the perspective of the Gm tonality, no, Em is not even a chord in this tonality, but in perspective of the main tonality of the song (Em) it is a resolution. But since we were last in Gm it definitely doesn't sound or even feel like a resolution. Which of course makes it very interesting. Since it's a concept album, the relation to the next song is also important. This ends in an Em chord, Can I play with madness starts in G, which is the relative major from Em. If Infinite Dreams would end in Gm, the transition would definitely sound different.

Yeah, I don't think that was an accident. It was left open ended for a reason, exactly like you said the chords and words remain unresolved, it drives the point.

Interviewer: How many of your songs are in E minor? Iron Maiden: Yes
@jackclements2163
@jackclements2163 3 жыл бұрын
That's not really a fair comment. How many of your songs are minor would be more accurate. Once analysed, many are D minor, A minor and others. Maiden have never been a detune band so, once they want to go as heavy as possible in standard tuning, E minor is the go to key...however when Adrian Smith rejoined the tracks in D minor and A minor had a lower bottom end guitar to give depth between bass and guitars. So his guitar has often been drop D with Dave and Janick above and Steve below. The nature of the genre demands these keys, to use anything else modulating at will brings your into something else...shite! It's heavy metal. Choose thine weapon!

My recommendation is to listen to the entire of the whole Seventh Son of a Seventh Son album. You will appreciate this song even more on the actual album. I love this live version but the mix of the studio version with the synth and everything is sven more mystical. I love this song I’m so glad you reacted to it. It’s very unique song in my opinion a lot happens in a short period of time. It’s my favorite of their songs even though it’s not one of their epics. But the first time I heard this song is in the context of the album. I think the thing with the ending chords reflects the lyrics. It doesn’t resolve like the way we don’t resolve the meaning of life and death. This concept of life and death and good v evil is very present with Iron Maiden which is why they’re one of my favorite bands.

I would‘ve preferred the studio recording for more subtle details and that recording especially makes much more sense to me than a live version (studio - getting to know the song, live - enjoying them having fun on stage and playing the songs faster). However - the chord progressions stay the same and here it‘s about those anyway.

How many of us were waiting for the "CAN I PLAY WITH MADNESS?" at the end there? (it's the next song on the album and always for me came in a little earlier than expected). Like I mentioned in another comment section of yours Doug, I was 16 at the time this album was released. The song Infinite Dreams, I didn't like at first listen. It was so vastly different than anything they had released before. But after several listens (hell, I wonder how many in total? A thousand??) , it's one of my favorites. I agree with the overall sentiment that the live version is not as good as the studio version, probably a bit faster as they usually are. 7th Son album probably one of their best studio mixes.

Dear Doug: Let me use a few lines to express my deepest gratitude about what you do for us, your followers. I truly believe that music is the engine of life. As example (sorry to make it personal, but is to highlight my appreciation), I'm a physician-scientist lucky enough to have made few contributions to science, and I truly believe whatever I have done right wouldn't be possible without Beatles, Pink Floyd and Maiden. I arrive home after strenuous journeys of work here in west Texas, and find HUGE JOY in watching at your videos. As an amateur musician on my own, having the privilege of having a band (disbanded by now - wish you could have time to listen to our stuff - I know you can't), I TREMENDOUSLY APPRECIATE YOUR TEACHING!!! That makes you unique in what you do in internet. I have just a minimal understanding of theory, and the way you analyze the songs of my favorite bands (such as Maiden and Floyd) makes me understand them better... BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, you rise me the bar in terms of music theory just enough that I can (at least try to) grasp it. It's TRULY meaningful what you do... As you said in one of your earliest posts: YOU'RE A TEACHER... You do not make a trivial reaction, nor you take the theory to impossible-to-grasp levels for us... You provide us fun while teaching, as well as challenging to look for more knowledge (I think, the utopic triad in teaching!)... REALLY!!! HATS OFF FROM A DIDACTIC, PEDAGOGIC AND TEACHING PERSPECTIVE... Sorry for the lengthy words, BUT I TRULY LOVE YOUR WORK (last but not least, you're a great communicator, greatly charismatic!!!). God (whichever you believe in) bless you.

"Infinite Dreams" Infinite dreams, I can't deny them Infinity is hard to comprehend I couldn't hear those screams Even in my wildest dreams Suffocation waking in a sweat Scared to fall asleep again In case the dream begins again Someone chasing, I cannot move Standing rigid, a nightmare's statue What a dream, when will it end and will I transcend? Restless sleep, the mind's in turmoil One nightmare ends, another fertile It's getting to me so scared to sleep But scared to wake now, in too deep Even though it's reached new heights I'd rather like the restless nights It makes me wonder, makes me think There's more to this, I'm on the brink It's not the fear of what's beyond It's just that I might not respond I have an interest, almost craving But would I like to get too far in? Can't be all coincidence Too many things are evident You tell me you're an unbeliever Spiritualist? Well me, I'm neither Wouldn't you like to know the truth Of what's out there to have the proof? And find out just which side you're on Where would you end? In Heaven or in Hell? Help me Help me to find my true self without seeing the future Save me Save me from torturing myself even within my dreams There's got to be just more to it than this Or tell me why do we exist I'd like to think that when I die I'd get a chance, another time And to return and live again Reincarnate, play the game Again and again and again and again

It's funny, because I know that song since I was fifteen, so I don't find that weird, but it is rather different than the usual. It sounds rather like falling instead of landing. But it does sound oneiric, I think it's fitting. The lyrics say of falling asleep, being in too deep, new heigths, being on the brink and the melody ends with a portamento down on that same cadence, the chord falling face first into place.

Check out Maiden's epic 'Sign of the Cross'! Keen to get your thoughts on this song for something a little different as it was recorded with a different singer Blaze Bayley on vocals when Bruce left the band in the mid-90s! Another longer epic which has made its way into the Maiden setlist in recent years, that should tell you that Bruce has given it a tick of approval!

The resolution of this song is deliberately unconvincing in order to leave the mood hanging in mid air, but then Can I Play With Madness kicks in with a major key and it takes care of the problem. This is the issue when you listen to the tracks from a very progressive album in isolation from each other. ;)

First of all, I think you do your best work at the piano. It really adds a dimension. Second, at 5:00 you have B go to Bb, E to D and B stay the same. That should be G. Just so you know someone is listening to your bits of theory :).
