I love how Tuomas managed to connect the dots here - taking what most laypeople consider dry and matter of calculations and bringing front and center the *passion* the scientists have for their field of study. Almost like religious fervor, deep love, but in a secular way.

Just realized now that Tuomas used Shakespeare quotes and builds the whole verse by using the structure of the shakespearian Sonnett (3/3/4/4). Beautiful little detail. Realizing first there is something "weird" with the verse structure and it all making sense when Shakespeare is quoted. Brilliant.

Neato! Tuomas does tend to do cool stuff like that. He injects art into the very structure of his songs. Another time he did that was in The Poet and the Pendulum. From the spoken word portion that mentions only having "3 minutes and counting," it is exactly 3 minutes until The Poet character in the song dies and his heart stops beating - right before the "Mother & Father" movement of the piece begins.

Human:II:Nature blew my mind. I listened to it every night during my night walks that Winter and it was like nothing I ever heard before. Oceanborn is up there in my top 3 too.

In fact, the point that Eugene is buried is in the very bottom of the crater "Shoemaker" in permanent shade from the sun as it is at the lunar south pole - with the earth dancing around on his horizon due to the slight wobble in the lunar orbit.

The Earth slowly describes a figure 8 pattern in the lunar sky, over a 27-day period, and at some latitudes you'd get to see it rise and set over and over, hence "eternal earthrise." (The Wikipedia entry on "earthrise" has the gory details.)

The "Eternal Earthrise" lyric is interesting and shows that Tuomas knows his stuff. Since we always see the same face of the Moon, that also means that, from the Moon, the Earth will always be the same place in the sky. So you would never see the Earth rise or set. But, the further north or south you travel, the Earth would appear lower and lower in the sky. Shoemaker's urn is near the Lunar south pole. So, depending on where it is exactly, the Earth could be visible just over the horizon giving the appearance of an "eternal Earthrise".

The thing is, the moon does have the same side towards Earth the whole time, but it's not perfectly still in that, it wobbles a little. This means that from about 20% of the moon's surface, you *can* see Earthrises (and Earth settings). In the 'best' places on the moon, it's possible to see entire earthrises. It's a slow process, I think it takes about 48 hours.

Just FYI, while "Ad astra" is Latin, "Laudato sii" (or the shortened form "laudato si' ") isn't: it's Vulgar, aka medieval Italian (has a lot of similarities with Latin tho...) and it's part of St. Francis' most important prayer, the Canticle of the Sun. "Laudato Si" is originally attributed to the 12th Century monk St Francis of Assisi from his "Canticle of the Sun" which is an homage to Nature. It's also from the second encyclical of Pope Francis, an entreaty to care for our planet. Those who have gone into space and having looked back on the Earth, realize how trivial our cares for power and wealth really are. I look at "Shoemaker" as encapsulating all of these themes together. "Ad Astra" is "to the stars". (Royal Air Force motto "per ardua ad astra" "through adversity to the stars").

Floor said in an interview that she actually rerecorded the aria at the end in her home studio because she thought she could do it even better than she had in Nightwish's studio. She really pushed herself for this and it paid off. You need to check out "Bismarck" or "Livgardet" by Sabaton.

Eugene Shoemaker, the man who pivoted the US space program astronaut education around for going to the Moon. The driving force who turned test pilots into geologists with long terrestrial field trips and a ton of classroom training. He had the ambition of going to the Moon as an astronaut himself, but sadly was rejected due to his Addison's disease. Rest in peace, somewhere near the lunar south pole, on the Earth facing side.

I think you would LOVE Apocalyptica. They are four classically trained cellists who created a rock/metal band. This is best illustrated with their song/video Path. They did later come out with a Path Vol 2 which is the same song but with a German singer. Way to go 😘 The spoken part; the Shakespear verse; is performed by Toumas' wife..., and so "fitting" as well, since they both , truly adore each other . Thanks for Shoemaker the whole album is different and has a clear message about the state of our world today it is written in very Poetic terms and quite cryptic at times when looking for the meaning of the Lyrics Really the Album needs to start at Music and end with endlessness they ( the songs) all make reference to each other in some way I am making my way through the album lyrics with Guylain Prince OFM he study’s lyrical content and breaks them down he speaks French so have to read the subtitles so it is taking me a while to get through it is a 2 part process as he listens to the song first then he analyses the lyrics I have loved the exposure to music I have never listened to through your channel which I am sure I should have known about those great iconic bands of the 70’s and 80’s that others know so well as I get older the more I enjoy music that has been my main entertainment during our last couple of years being in lockdown in Victoria Australia

Nightwish is always magic. I say this often (?) but you should give a try to Rhapsody of Fire, the songs "Symphony of Enchanted Lands" or "Dark tower of Abyss". They have an amazing orchestral sound; you'll surely will like them (except for the double drum parts).

This seems to be the first NW album where Tuomas did what he wanted to do without having to care about the limitations of the main singer. "These are the words that I wrote to this melody, you figure it out." And it isn't something that can be put in a certain catogary.

"Background stuff, other worldly" The "dreamlike" hammered Dulcimer I think Doug, that is heard through the first section. Some previous discussions if it's digital or real and that is lightyears beyond my ears, I would think Tuomas would have used a real one if it were possible, but I have no idea. Eternal earthrise is what Shoemaker would "see" from his position on the south pole of the moon.

Doug, given what you've heard here, I would highly recommend you react to the "Nature" side of Human :||: Nature, as it is right up your alley: 8 tracks, all written by Tuomas, that are purely instrumental in nature (no pun intended, lol). Each one is different, but none actually end before the next one begins. My favorite is the last one, which has as a bonus treat a reading by I believe Geraldine Butler, a British actress, reading a passage from "Pale Blue Dot" by Dr. Carl Sagan. I really think you'll love listening to it, and as a composer, enjoy learning how Tuomas writes the music he does, from a classical perspective.

What is your problem with fantasy lyrics? They make fantastic songs. See virtually every song by Dio. Or check out Clamavi de Profundis and their adaptations of Tolkien's poems. If fantasy isn't your cup of tea that's fair, but it's NOT a valid source of critique of a work of art if it uses fantasy.
