In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to the music of the symphonic metal band Nightwish with their brand new single release Perfume of the Timeless. It's another in a long line of epic songs from Nightwish. I love the scope, the sounds, and the lyrics. This is a great new song, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Thanks for your commentary on this song. You recognise the majors / minors, key changes, all various instrumentation & show appreciation for the lyrics and the message. We know what we like and what our own preferences are. Tuomas has made it well known he is intrigued & inspired by the universe, biology and how we live in it and how mankind is as a part of it. For 2 decades Tuomas has been a passionate storyteller and the band members (past & present) are talented musicians who have brought the music to life. He has written songs about love, loss & life. We are grateful for his artist talents and bringing us all along in his musical journey.

I agree about the vocals. She needs to be a bit louder in the mix during the chorus. I was having trouble understanding her, which isn't anything new for me and Nightwish...or Within Temptation for that matter.

Its about sacrificing a little bit to have the orchestra shine as it needs to. In a song like this its always a fight of the frequencies. And most bands would always sacrifice the orchestra and turn that down. Which imo is clearly the wrong way to go in this genre. The orchestra is what makes it. You can still hear her and the brilliance of her voice just enough. Its just right.

Well Nightwish dont dissapoint "do you fell the ghost energy song" I listened to this song maybe 50 times by now, and it is one i like to listen to with my headphones or without, its really a good song, when it can work so to me. Some say Floors voice is low in the mix, and i can agree its hard to get all words she sing, but if you look at it soundwise it sounds amazing!! and after a listen or 2, you know most of lyrics, and its no problem at all, its done fully on purpose for the sound experince of it.. cant wait for rest of album!! Yesterwynde is the opening track on new album, i belive its only like a intro, its a little over 2 min long, #2 on album then is a almost 10 min song, thats proberly another epic!! #3 is where i think they bring in a heavy track, and this Perfume of the timeless is #5.. so i think its gonna be a good mix of heavy songs, Epics, and maybe a full balled.. Perfume of the timeless, well its almonst a ghost energy song right, telling all these ancestors is perfume around in a timeless world, being around you still, also a message that your existens matters!! i feel tuomas also put in a little message that mankind could do better still, Einstein turn to ape.. The title of the album is a word made by band member Troy Donockley, which Holopainen describes as the feeling of time, history, memory, and being connected to past generation, who have "all had their lives, their ups and downs, and they don't exist anymore, except as atoms scattered all over the universe. And we're going to be in that state pretty soon as well. So that should give you something to think about." Holopainen has described the album as being about humanism, history, and the inspiration thereof, and that outlook of the album is positive and optimistic ] Track listing Yesterwynde release date: 20th September 2024 All tracks are written by Tuomas Holopainen. Yesterwynde track listingNo. Title Length 1. "Yesterwynde" 2:43 2. "An Ocean of Strange Islands" 9:26 3. "The Antikythera Mechanism" 5:55 4. "The Day of..." 4:34 5. "Perfume of the Timeless" 8:11 6. Kai said that the mix is the way that Tuomas wants it in that the voices are part of the voices of the ancestors, I found that the KZbin version sounds better than the mix on the Apple Music one. I listened to the Apple version first and found that the vocals were not clear, then when the music video came out on KZbin later I watched that and listened to it in my cinema where I have a decent sound system and it was a hundred times better than what I had listened to on Apple. I have pre ordered the album with the Dolby Atmos mix on Bluray and I am really excited to hear that when it comes out. Loved your reaction analysis Doug, thanks for doing this.

I wonder if it is because of the Dolby mix that the vocals have got lost in other channels that are missing in the stereo remix? It is interesting as Tuomas is very particular about his mixes and generally the public are not in favour of them. It has been a consistent complaint across all their albums and I think that is part of the "the band is better live" mantra as the studio albums just don't sound that great to most listeners.

yeah I know a few bands that released their new album singles on youtube a lot of them for some reason the mix is off. But on the actual CD its perfect.. I hope thats the way this is as well cause on this song theres parts where you barely can hear Floor and what she's singing. And when you have a powerhouse vocalist like her you don't put that voice behind a wave of instruments. We'll see when the actual album comes out.

Well done, Daily Doug, for commenting that the vocals could be a bit higher in the mix. Quite a few people (fans) have made similar comments, and they have become somewhat controversial, but you are the first reactor I have seen to come out and say it as well. Kudos for that. I think this is another Nightwish epic. I love the music - so complex and with some great riffs reminiscent of other NW classics. I agree that the only thing that would make this even better is if the vocals were a bit stronger. Great reaction. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺🤘

@metalpuppet5798
@metalpuppet5798 3 ай бұрын
You can still hear her perfectly. Its always about making sacrifices in the mix especially in a genre like this. The orchestra has to shine through. Its one vocal point of the song. Yes Floor is one too but they are equally as important. Way too many symphonic Metal bands just sacrifice basically the entire orchestra to have the singer really up front. Which is not the way to go. This genre is literally defined by orchestral elements that are a big part of the song. And the human voice is also a big interference point with especially the higher instruments of the orchestra. In a Metal context these higher instruments are extremely important because they are basically the only ones that really cut through, so if you are turning them down to have more of the voice your orchestra parts are just going to disappear. And that cant be the goal.

Doug, you really need to check out the song "Winter" by Synestia & Disembodied Tyrant. The song quotes some melodies from a rather famous Baroque composer. Yes, it does have harsh vocals, but it also has wonderful orchestration and excellent choral writing, too. Really, I think you ought to check out the whole EP "Winter" is a part of, but I have a feeling that you would very likely enjoy "Winter" the most. It also has some beautiful visuals of landscapes and wildlife that really pair quite well with the music. The next Album is a part of a Trilogy with the previous 2 Albums, so the Theme is the same in all of them and it is on purpose, not by obsession. In fact one should treat and listen the 3 Albums as ONE Album divided to three separate Records published in different years, in order to keep the amount of songs in a record in 10 instead of 30 and also in order to keep the interest alive and Live performances giving chance to more new songs to be played (if in Live shows needed to choose 4-5 out of a 30, much of the songs would not be heard Live) - giving that NW announced they will not do a Live Tour after the Yesterwynde Album, but I think that was not originally the plan on 2015 when the Trilogy started..

The problem with intelligibility may lie in the fact that many people focus on Floor's voice. If you then bring Floor back to the level of the choir, your brain will play a strange game and you will lose Floor's intelligibility. The fact that various band members have to explain that it is meant to be that way doesn't help either. Will we get a manual with the new album? That said, I'm looking forward to that album. The lyrical content is also related to "us" as "humans" being the Greatest Show on Earth. All that we have done and all that we will do. Simply amazing how the level of talent and true artistic value is so far above and beyond the actual crap that comes out of the US as a whole. This is one of the reasons that I began to listen to this genre of music more than 15 yrs ago now. I live in Nashville TN and I'm a singer metal/symphonic metal/hard rock Xfactor etc but no country. I must have more substance in both what I listen too and aspire to write and produce. Therion and Nightwish are my favs. The period in which Matts Levin was with Therion was the best. I also believe that this period with Floor Jansen with Nightwish is their best. Although I wish that Marko Hietala was still in the band. Although Jukka is great no doubt but I just think that Marko's voice was a better contrast to Floor Jansen. I was very excited when Floor joined I felt that Tarja's voice was too operatic. Yes Floor came from that background but she had moved in a much more metal/hard rock direction by the time that she joined Nightwish full time. Toumas even commented during the time that Marko left that if Floor left they were done. Yes they are a FANTASTIC group but she is now the main attraction !! Her stage presence is simply stunning !!

"You are the dream of many ancestors"... what a statement !!!! Another massive song from The Master Tuomas Holopainen. Wow, just WOW... I know I have my nitpicks about this songs sound mix, but when I Really Dive In (pun intended) to the music and lyrics, this song is as massive as The Greatest Show on Earth. This Song makes you think... and thats Good because, there are sadly less and less people who can think and wonder about life and all its grand workings on this day and age... Great Reaction my good sir !!!! NWSU/FloorFan/Epican/ayreonaut/TWA 🤘😎🤘

Thank you, Doug for a great reaction. You've said that you like the usage of this double kick in the bridge and that you understand the musical meaning behind it, but then never told us what it is. What were your thoughts on this?

He is smart enough not to criticize Nightwish. He knows the fan base can't handle even the mildest criticism.

Kai Hahto said that Floor is part of the choir on purpose and that’s why she is so back in the mix.

Literally every reactor that I saw said the voices are too low in the mix. And I 100% agree. It's a shame since it's such an amazing track!

The vocals are low in the mix on purpose,its suppose to be a chorus of ancestors.

Hello from France, I agree with you, the voice is a little under-mixed. But I notice that on many Music videos, the voice sounds a little under-mixed and when we listen to the songs on the albums, the mix is great. So I hope it is the case here, it would be really better because this song is amazing (I find, in my opinion).

I'm responsible for more than my share of the 1MM views. 😁 With each listen, I'm happier with the mix that Tuomas elected to use. Floor's voice is there, but as part of the choir, and not the dominant sound. Nobody would complain if it was any voice other than Floor's: because we know what she can do, we feel like we're missing out. (Not the first time he's done this: listen to the chorus in "Edema Ruh".)
