There are so many ways to build mantels, but so little information out there on them. Especially a traditional build like this with an over mantel. I truly wanted to document this and put it out there to help anyone who wants to build a mantel. While no two mantels are really the same, I feel this video can serve as a general guide to get you started in the right direction. I learned a ton on this job and I am happy to share it with you here. I really hope this helps someone! Here are the chapters below: Intro 0:00 Design & Layout 1:16 Determining Height 2:07 Building Header 2:43 Wrapping Over Mantel to Wall 4:45 Over Mantel Pattern Install 7:10 Stone to Wood Transition 8:00 Installing Moulding Around Firebox 9:22 Making the Mantel Frieze Board 13:16 Frieze Template 14:40 Installing Frieze Board 16:40 Cornice Mockup 16:59 Cornice Installation 17:25 Mantel Shelf Top Install 20:13 Recap/Overview/Details 20:51

Your passion is contagious, man! You and the other guy should sign and date it somewhere - maybe out of sight or even underneath the main mantle top or something? Maybe even a newspaper and a thumb drive with the video on it stuck inside for a future generation.! .

Nice work . Looking great . 1 piece of advice I would give is use tape 3M packing tape for your miters . The spring clamps work great but tape is just as effective and you won’t have holes to fill . Just my 2 cents .

Moulding Nerd trivia- that little strip that acts as a support moulding under the frieze is called a taenia with the architrave underneath. I just knew that my college class on Greek architecture would be useful someday…

I haven’t watched your videos in a long time, but after following Brent, as well as Passion for Craft it’s led me back to your channel. I can’t get enough! How often does Brent pop in to check your work or does he leave it all up to his PM’s? That’d constantly have me on edge 😂

Amazing build quality. I feel that the width of the mantle freeze should be as wide as the pilasters around the opening so the visual line goes straight up and then the shelf is wider. Also I think the mantle should have been 2” thick. Just my preference.

Appreciate the walk thru this incredible creation, especially all the technical details of what you were doing step by step. I had a question for you. In more recent videos you have been wood glueing your joints with the spring clamps. In older videos you used to use super glue and accelerator. Do you still use super glue and accelerator and if so when you do you choose to use it versus wood glue? Thanks.
