I was so happy when I saw you in the bathtub with this book. It's a James I've had for a long time, but have never jumped into. Thanks, Scott.

I actually read the damn thing decades ago for my doctoral exams, made lots of notes, and completely forgot it. This time I enjoyed it a lot and remember much of it vividly, so I don't know if that's a recommendation or not!

PC is on my read soon pile. I was told by a professor that PC and The Tragic Muse were the James novels no one appreciates. The very same professor who in an act of uncharacteristic viscousness assigned both The Prairie and The Pioneers in two separate novel classes. Daniel Day Lewis was the best thing that ever happened to Cooper!
@ScottmbradfieldАй бұрын
Wow, what a bastard. I thought the only jerk who assigned Cooper to their students was moi. s
@donaldkelly3983Ай бұрын
You really assigned Cooper to your students?! Really? Was the course entitled "How Not To Write an Engaging Narrative"?@@Scottmbradfield
@ScottmbradfieldАй бұрын
@@donaldkelly3983 No it as academic, about how US writers transposed British class-based novels into man v nature narratives... Cooper's annoying but he's annoying in very rigorous ways! s

James has been on my list for a while now. I think I’ll start with Portrait of a Lady.

That's a good place to start... s

People would probably think I’m crazy or lying if I told anyone this, but I really enjoy his prose style. It’s so immersive and detailed that it’s hypnotic- almost no matter what he’s writing about it’s fun to read. I haven’t read any of his longer books though.
@samuelwright9907Ай бұрын
And thanks for the review, love hearing your thoughts about Henry James!
@ScottmbradfieldАй бұрын
No, I don't think you're crazy, or any crazier than my other friends who love James... I go off and on again but have really enjoyed him recently, so maybe I'm going crazy too. s

Glad you’re coming around to the master a little more, Scott. Always enjoyed James sentences and his use of double negatives lol. Have many of his novels still to go though. Time to break out Daisy Miller again this month I think.

There may be some triple and quadruple negs in there as well, it's sometimes hard to find your way to the end of a sentence! But I did enjoy this one.

Just the man I wanted to talk to. Have you read The Last Temptation of Christ by Kazantzakis? I have a copy I've never read
@ScottmbradfieldАй бұрын
I read a lot of Kazantzakis in high school including that but don' remember very clearly. My favorites were Zorba and the autobiography, I forget the title it's buried in my shelves...
