the producers said before the song even dropped they had a vision of honoring indian music and marrying it with the kpop sphere to create something beautiful, the intent was to bridge the two very distict and different genres to create something that new and exciting which is non offensive or appropriating.
@HawkKing20002 жыл бұрын
Good point. Not all borrowing is appropriation. Some is respectful, acknowledges the source material, and creates a new fusion...
@Minale__2 жыл бұрын
@@HawkKing2000 Yeah I think one of the biggest differences is that the producers specifically pointed out that it is inspired by Indian music and includes a lot of Bollywood elements. They didn't try to sell it as something they came up with, didn't claim it as their own, they explicitly stated that they took these beautiful existing elements and wanted to honor them. I think we shouldn't shy away from using elements of different cultures for beautiful new blends, as long as we don't claim them as something we made up when it's been part of another culture for a long time. So much of culture is specifically about sharing and enjoying it together, and it can be done very respectfully if we honor its origins.

Aaaaah don't hesitate, bc they are around since 2016 (not as a full group tho) Loona has a great discography and discovering them is like taking a great journey ! (about 80 songs for 36 MV) For the lore if you are interested, Loominosity (YT channel) make super clear video about it. They are quite long but super well edited. On top of that they only use official lore, not super complexe, far-fetched fan theories ! They are in a hiatus right now but you will find a GREAT introduction to the Lore covering the whole pre-debut project ! EDIT : AAAAH I would ad, for the OT12 releases, the teaser are independant to the MV so it cen be good to watch them before !

As a South Asian person I grew up listening to music that contained all these instruments, so I really loved seeing the reactors' appreciation for them. Even the flute and deeper drum you hear in the song are common in Bollywood music, and some of the verse's melodic developments also felt familiar (imagine Sunidhi Chauhan singing it and it works perfectly). I've always thought tabla goes so hard in particular lol. Side note: when I first heard about LOONA doing this kind of concept I was somewhat apprehensive but I personally found myself pleasantly surprised. Rather than just using our instruments haphazardly for ethnic flavour, I appreciated that they credited the Bollywood industry as an influence - that difference feels appreciative and not disrespectful or tokenizing to me. In general most of the South Asian people I saw didn't seem to mind although I'm sure some do since these things can be a mixed bag, so I obv don't speak for all of them.

I like what you wrote there, "...rather than just using our instruments haphazardly for ethnic flavor" I know I am going to remember this forever. This is especially a clear line that people have to learn that some can be just for performance, when done out of respect, some just aren't to be messed around with. Speaking as someone who lives in Southeast Asia, I barely know the specifics part of music, instruments, styles, or any other art or ritual forms from my own country (even the province where I live), let alone in others. I probably know more parts about piano and violin, the history of jazz and blues rather than our own traditional instruments and genre. I would love to see the people whose culture is being honored, share more about this! This is why having done the research, talking to the representative of the community, and really putting the good intention all around is sooo important; as well as not making the CA discourse on the internet as just a weapon to gain attraction or bring others down (instead of educating or improving).

As an Indian I was glad to hear instruments we hear so much and almost always in Classical Indian Music(I am most familiar with Hindustani and Karnatic Classical Music) and obviously the most recognisable music industry being Bollywood, for foreigners. It wasn't appropriation. They acknowledged and appreciated our music and the song is great! I am not speaking for everyone. But I don't think anyone had any problem we were just happy to see a new blend in K-Pop. Note: (I honestly think if the song was in hindi or telugu or tamil etc this song could have been in an Indian movie too.) Edit: Not to take away from the girls they did great, the song's fantastic, the Classic Kpop parts, the girls and their voices, the rap section with yeojin and Vivi's part all of it makes the song theirs.

as a desi person, I saw the song as appreciation & a beautiful merge between asian cultures. The imagery & attire was used respectfully too. I did see the loona contreversy of loona "mocking desis" but when I looked into the actual situation, what I found was a case of something so normalised in korean society that it's not even recognised as intentional disrespect. It's a way bigger topic about Korea to be discussed, eg. I saw actors do the exact same gestures in "a love so beautiful" kdrama, however loona were the 1st people to ever address this problem. So I recognise that they are conscientious of culture & it doesn't affect my initial image of the music.

For what I remember the song by itself isn't seen as CA by most bc credits were given to Bollywood even before any preview and by the songwritters, BBC and the member themselves. And bc this fusion is done during the whole song like a commitement, somewhat ? Some Indians talked about how it was the first time they heard an Indian inspired kpop song that actually sound like one and not just a vague influence in just some part of the song to have an "exotic" vibe for one-two verses, creating a sort of parody feeling. For the outfits, it's more complicated some say it's logical bc of the Bollywood inspiration, other see them as CA (by "some people" I talk about South Asian Orbits and later Indians who flooded PTT comment section)
@timingmile70302 жыл бұрын
It is hard to define CA for PTT as they made it clear that the concept was Bollywood inspired. In their past music videos they paid a lot of respect to other cultures in Butterfly as well. So I don't feel that it is CA for this comeback. I am south asian and what I define as CA of desi culture is wearing clothing and using culture without giving credit or using it in a disrespectful way like Jay Park lyrics/Gidle dancing infront of a mosque or wearing mendhi without giving credit/Boa dancing to Hindu prayers

Every time I watch a video about LOONA, I find new things about the lore. But, I think that's the fun of it. Everyone can see the same videos, can see the same theories, and then adapt them in a different way.

Finally, a ReacttotheK video on PTT! I'm always glad to hear from you, guys -- especially when you react to Loona. I personally view your insights as helpful in gaining more appreciation of Loona's music, and even of Loona's lore. And I especially love that this video comes out weeks prior to Queendom season 2. It helps in upping the ante and promoting Loona further. About the lore, however, I think it would have been better if you got the lore explanation from official sources (e.g., the MV descriptions) instead of some script online, because it only makes it confusing; and a certain level of interpretation is already inserted before the audience is allowed to see and interpret for themselves. Anyway, this is just me; and that's just some sort of an unsolicited advice. And, yeah, that Loona shielded earth from a supernova explosion is not necessarily the case. I, for one, don't believe it. I believe that Loona, including the loonas around the world, grew in power as they learn to accept themselves, stand against women oppression, and become one with each other (there are many elements in PTT MV that points to a wedding, because Loona is becoming "One" like the red strings of fate, the hairpieces, the incense-burner, the flowers, the 12 drum beats, etc). This growth in power is represented by the moon turning into a moon-star (i.e., becoming a sun to itself). That's why in PTT, the Earth can now revolve around the moon. Meanwhile, in So What and Why Not, we see the moon burn. That's why we also see supernovae and black holes in the MV's. And in Starseed ~Kakusei~ MV, the animation shows the moon as "the star in the sky". I can't give more comments about your musical analyses. Clearly, you know more about it than me. I agree that Kim Lip's voice is unique, and basically everything you, guys, said! :) More power!

I appreciate the "stacked" cut-in edits. And the, what seems to me to be additional, expanded variety of "enhanced and animated" dynamic graphics. (Like the mic at Raffi's mouth). Very fun! Nice Lazy.

Besides the rich points brought to light by the reactors, the fact they all mentioned the empowerment, girl boss, voice colours is all so Loona oriented that the idea their theme conveys it all the time Is amazing Thanks StanLoona

as an indian, i think it's super impressive to take inspiration and sample music from other cultures, and make it into a coherent song, which loona did very well. i see it as cultural appreciation, not appropriation. also, the accessories and outfits don't really bother me either. most people here don't get offended by foreigners wearing our ethnic attires or accessories, they think it's super cute. i think the criticism mostly comes from indians who were raised outside india and likely had to face racism and discrimination. i understand why they might find it offensive when foreigners use our culture as an aesthetic, but as long as it is done respectfully, i think it's the first step to educating people about different cultures and embracing diversity.
