I really appreciate your detailed looks at how the arrangements do what they do. Nowadays in live performances Kevin, whose voice has grown and improved with time and work, adds quite a bit more ornamentation to his solo verse: runs, flips, an octave jump. The group (and arranger Ben Bram) have learned how to best use what was a kind of "secret weapon" early on, in that no one expects Kev to sing at all, much less in that high, pure falsetto.
@vickyburton243411 ай бұрын
This song just has “good bones”. It is simply one of the most beautiful reverent songs ever written. I never get tired of listening to this song no matter what time of year it is.
@kayecastleman635311 ай бұрын
I believe this was the first time Kevin had a major singing solo, and it really rocked the Pentaholics' world. He does have a beautiful tenor voice, though not as strong as the others, understandably. Apparently Avi used his inherent teaching skills when they lived together to help Kevin train his voice to a performance level. This is such a moving song. Thanks for pulling out the details so we can appreciate it even more. My first intro to Babytonix was in 2012, "Little Drummer Boy." It's a simple but creative arrangement. I hope it's on your Christmas agenda.

You’re so much more than a Reactor (although your facial expressions show definite reaction), you’re a patient educator who shares your love for music while informing us in theory & composition. I appreciate that you are methodical in starting with a bit of the Sing Off beginnings (actually there are even earlier videos of The Trio in high school…), and watching them grow in the Avi years before diving into the Matt (current) era. I see lots of requests to review their very latest releases (which are a whole ‘nother level!), but I like the natural progression of how you are reviewing them currently. Their catalog is deep and wide, and I’d enjoy you getting to know and love Matt the way we have. I don’t compare him him to filling Avi’s shoes, rather he brought his own dang shoes and and we love him too. And might I just add, I couldn’t help but watch this episode whilst noting the Like button literally spinning upwards during the 14 minutes!🌟

Your analysis is on point as always! Your ear is impressive! The speed you pick up each part is insane! Do you you have perfect pitch? That is always fun to see, but what I truly appreciate is how your are able to breakdown musical theory without being overly technical or verbose. You hit a perfect balance between being easy enough for non-musicians to understand/learn, and advanced enough to keep musicians engaged/entertained!

Thank you! It's always tricky trying to explain things in the manner you've described, so I'm happy to hear that it's coming across that way 🙏 Perfect pitch is a weird one as it's useful in different ways, and people define it differently. That said - no, I don't have perfect pitch, I wasn't born with it sadly😅You might call it relative pitch?

I have followed Pentatonix ever since they won the Sing Off with their 'sick' arrangements and 'crazy awesome' harmonies. I never knew a capella could sound like that 😅 I knew five different sounds were being combined to produce such gorgeous music but I didn't know how they did it. I did see that it took a lot of work (the Singoff showed some behind the scenes footage). Thank you for the breakdown of parts of their singing... it helped me appreciate the insane amount of work they put in. If ever I get marooned on a desert island with only two choices of music artists, it would be Dimash and Pentatonix for me. Maybe if I get myself more educated, I might have classical music in my list. Dimash is definitely going to introduce me to such music via his involvement in 'Virtuosos'. Anyway I'm rambling 😂 great reaction video - I really like how you explain the way the different parts are woven together.

I was driving when this came on the radio. I'd never heard of this song, and I knew nothing of PTX. I had to pull over to the shoulder and stop the car, and for several minutes I couldn't drive because I was shaking and couldn't see. Years later, I got to see PTX live at the Tacoma Dome. At the end of their show, they had the audio engineers turn off the PA, and the five sang for a crowd of 16,000 without any amplification whatsoever. And it was wonderful.

Love your explanation of the technique they use in their harmonies. Very educational. One thing in a different area of the video, the videography itself! In the second half of the song, after they turn towards the light coming into the cave, Kirstie is often framed by the mouth of the cave, with the light creating a halo/aura around her that resembles the way Mary/the Madonna is often depicted in classic imagery.

I know by now the Christmas season is long over and it'll be many months before it rolls back around, but when it does, please, please, please do VOCTAVE's version of this song. The songwriter himself, Mark Lowry, sings the solo and he SLAYS it. He holds the climactic belt note so long I end up practically hyperventilating trying to breathe for him, lol! And VOCTAVE's background vocals have to be heard to be believed. They are transcendent! I can not make it through without crying, no matter how many times I've watched it. On that note, pun intended, anything by VOCTAVE is pretty much magical. They do a lot of acapella too. It's an ensemble, so a bit larger group than the ones you've been reacting to so far. No beatboxing, stylistically more choral. But they are beyond phenomenal!

Loved this! I always listen for Kirsten's use of vibrato so it was lovely to see you call that out! The combination of the lyrics with the times they come in and on what note-- that's what I watch you for, that and your enthusiasm! I truly hope you are able to work in the music field (by no means am asking for personal info tho! I alone may overshare ;) )! The lack of resolution lyrically has always been so powerful to me, especially because the implication here can be, 'would that knowledge be enough to make up for what's to come?' Though I no longer associate with religion, it's still moving as an unknown. Thanks again for this!

Helloo, thanks for the comment 👍Haha whilst I won't give away any personal info, there have been time(s) in my life where I have worked in the music field - whether that be in the past or present. I agree with the power of the lyrics - whilst aware of Mary Did You Know, I'd never really paid it much attention, so I'm thankful that I've been exposed to it once more through PTX. I've gone back and listened to the original many times since

Thank you for your amazing reaction to Pentatonix! They are super talented & outstanding together and I've been also enjoying Avi's solo work👌I could hapilly spend hours and hours listening to your interesting explanations about music because they're very clear (even for a non expert in the area) and your accent is delightful (even - and especially - for a latinamerican). Besides, I loved the brief glimpse of your fingers in action on the keyboard during the last part of your explanation - it was "magnifique", thanks! :)

PTX are masters at tight harmonies! I think this is one of my favorites because of the basic question: Mary, did you know? Another great tune by PTX is Hallelujah. These two songs just pierce my soul with their arrangements!

if you like this version of Mary Did You Know, you should definitely check out the one by Voctave. They are who the members of Pentatonix go to when they want a fuller sound :) They sang it with Mark Lowrey, who wrote the song...

Love it when you exhibit the music and dissect the parts and who is singing what. That helps to understand the complexity of the music and how it is constructed. Also of interest would be what is everyday structure versus anything innovative. Thank you.

Here's a new PTX O Holy Night pitch: there's a version they did during the Avi era, 9 years ago. There is no video, only the yule log. It's totally different from the current version. I like the Avi version a lot; very interesting chords and it goes to some surprising places. The new Matt Era will blow your socks off as someone said, but I'd like to hear your opinion and analysis of the old one. Plus, when you do get to the Matt Era it will be interesting to contrast the two.

Thanks for letting me know! I'll need to try to remember this for when I get round to their new version once I'm in the Matt era. A comparison, perhaps, could be useful indeed...

Thank you for your reactions. I love how you explain things in such detail. I hope you can get to Amazing Grace, Hallelujah, Bohemian Rhapsody and Sound of Silence......they are my favorites, and I believe you will enjoy them too 🙂

The writer of this song, Mark Lowry, started writing this song with the idea of “what if the real life Mary was sitting across the table and they were having coffee and a conversation together. What questions would he want to ask…” I think the ending is unresolved because we haven’t heard Mary’s answers to his questions.

You explain things so well. I don't have anything specific for you to analyze next, but I'd say keep watching a lot of their old arrangements first, then after all of that, continue on to their stuff in post-Avi era.

Thanks, this is my plan! I'm getting many requests for performances with Matt in and it's getting harder and harder to stick to it😅
@hernameispekka_Rebecca11 ай бұрын
@@SirHairless I honestly would generally not watch a reactor who only watches the old stuff. You somehow has manged to grab my attention enough for me to stick it out. (People can be very annoying about being Avi purists so reactors who only listen to that are usually not very good at listening and appreciering music for what it is and gets stuck on comparing things, which is a pet peeve of mine. You have proved that you're not gonna be one of those so I'm ok with you choosing to view them from a growth and change perspective.)
@SirHairless11 ай бұрын
Thank you, I appreciate it @@hernameispekka_Rebecca. And I don't intend to watch every single performance with Avi before moving onto the Matt era - the initial plan was just to become well-acquainted with PTX's work and, as you said, try to roughly get an idea of their growth. I imagine the Matt era will come fairly soon to me with the requests coming in!

Wonderful reaction, Sir! I must say, you give the most detailed analysis of their vocals of any reactor I've seen, yet you make it so easy to understand. I would love to see you react to their newly released video of O Holy Night.

Thank you, glad to hear it! I'm not in the Matt era yet and my Christmas schedule is booked up for this year :( The will power to not listen to their new O Holy Night!! But I'm sure it'll come in the future 🎶 Thanks for watching!
