I think this is one of their more fun songs to dive into as a musician, they really mess with the scales and time signatures on it. I like all the "uh.. what? no it makes sense now thats cool" moments, lol, good to know its not just me

To me Opeth is like Pink Floyd, they are their own genre inspired by multitudes of other styles. No one sounds like Opeth.

I know this isn't related to this video really, but you've asked in earlier videos where the "medieval" influences come from, and I think I might have an answer. I know Mikael is a big fan of Comus and they have the same kind of medieval feel to them so that's a very likely source of inspiration.

11:44 Death metal to my ears, but I only have listening ears, not analyzer ears. Orchid and Morningrise have more of a black metal feel to them, in particular the bonus tracks from those albums, Into the Frost of Winter and Eternal Soul Torture. A lot of the calm and atmospheric things, are very much a black metal thing to do, too.

also I'm 100% sure on the genre deal you were talking about, my ears&brain apparently just like good music when they hear it 😋 I've listened to cradle of filth a handful of times and didn't really get that vibe, maybe because he's got them distinct vocals I don't see it , but meh, enjoy the next one!

The first few Opeth releases were pretty rooted in death metal with some "black metal nonsense" as Mikael once said. The middle albums blend multiple metal genres, so they became "progressive metal," and the more recent works have abandoned "metal" to become "prog rock." At least that's how I hear it.
@PJAlphaMusic

They are telling me watershed was basically the last album with death metal resembles, is that true?
@bryanmack5410

@@PJAlphaMusic Yes. Dramatically. "Heritage" came out a few years later, and began the war of "Oldpeth vs Newpeth." There are zero "growls" and only a few songs that use any "metal styles." It was not well-received at all, ESPECIALLY by the fans. The next albums would be stronger, with their most recent being the "masterpiece" of the new prog-rock style. But they, of course, still play all the old classics live to this day.

@@PJAlphaMusic I don't know if it's true, but the story is circulating that at the time he wrote the music for this album, his girlfriend did actually commit suicide.
@joaquingonzalez3359
@joaquingonzalez3359 Жыл бұрын
@@PJAlphaMusic what i found from an official interview is that mikael had a girlfriend in the 90s that lasted only a few months and they broke up, then he married his current wife in 2003, he comments that his ex-girlfriend had a son and that he wished he could overcome his depression, if it weren't for her, he would do it for his son, but during the recording of Watershed he found out that he committed suicide and he was very inspired by that situation to write hessian peel and hex omega (when the song say "will the children cry when their mother dies" for example), but it's not that his wife committed suicide, and mikael suffered from depression because of it, all of that is false

This is a typical example of progressive death metal. No black metal included. The build up is really unsurpassed. You really should listen to it again and again (endlessly as far as I'm concerned😊) but listen particularly to the bass. It's extremely important in the build up of this song.

The heavy middle part after the little piano break is VERY black metal, as are many of other parts of this album (lotus eater for example). Their black metal influence is undeniable, and that's partly why I don't like to label Opeth. They're definitely their own thing, but with a lot of progressive, folk, black metal and death metal influence.

@@josueignaciommI think the middle heavy part in heir apparent also has a black metal feel (the part with the minor 2nd tremolo riff)
