In 2019, I watched some Greta Van Fleet clips with my dear friend Yasmin Stelling (a classical soprano singer and vocal coach) to see what she had to say, and it was a lot of fascination and fun. What a huge musical heart made of so much love and knowledge, and I feel compelled to celebrate it by finishing this video. We miss you, darling.

Usually, when I watch the “reacts” videos, I notice a couple things 1) the professionals usually like the same parts that I do, and 2) they always tell me why I like them. In a way, it is kind of like an approval to enjoy a certain song and/or genre. It sucks that she is gone, and I’m glad that you didn’t edit her down. This should serve as an unfading memory to you!

Thank you for this, Tess. Quite the gift for GVF fans! Yaz articulated her reactions so well. I've watched just about every "pro" vocalist/coach reaction video out there on GVF and she's the only one I feel really nailed it. She's the only one I've seen who noticed Josh's little yodels. Since he grew up in "Little Bavaria" and their grandfather is in the polka hall of fame, I suspect he knows how to do a proper Bavarian yodel and it comes through in his vocal stylings. Yaz was beautiful, talented, open and articulate. What a loss. I'm so sad for you and anyone who knew her. P.S. I'm surprised you chose two live TV performances, notoriously not Josh's best because they make him really nervous and you can hear it in his voice. He admits to having done 4 shots of tequila just to be able to get out on The Tonight Show stage.

Just came across this video. I was so sad to hear that your lovely friend featured here had passed away. I learned a lot from her about the technicalities of Josh's singing. I wondered about half way through if Josh actually thinks about emphasizing certain vowels more, or the gravely affects of certain lines or if he just sings like that. I know some singers are very particular and analyze every line. At any rate, thank you for posting this video. I'm sure it wasn't easy to watch, but Yaz is still teaching people like me a year and a half later! It seems like she would've liked that.

Having 3 sons myself, I'm gonna venture to say that Josh got his range from yelling as boys do, especially when there's 3 around the same age! So, he has had his lifetime, so far as it can be in his early 20's, and I think he's just going to get better, if possible, as he keeps being front man for the great Greta Van Fleet! Rock on 👍🏼🤗

First I want to say I’m sorry for your loss. Very sad to hear..❣️ I’m new to GVF’s music (and you too Tess) and I had some trouble getting into Josh’s voice. Love all the brothers (and the drummer too) they are extremely talented especially for their age. I believe they’ll stay together because they’re brothers and if they can stay away from too much partying and not kill each other, they will have a really long career. I listened to them after someone mentioned them and I really like them (again just not the singer) but I’m into them now. I played Highway Tune about 50 times with air pods yesterday and I sound terrible. I’m always waiting for the firemen to kick in my door, thinking there’s someone hurt! In the end I’m just telling my neighbors their welcome ;) Great to have a real hard rock band that’s just bare bones kick ass rock. Like a garage band with just the guys jamming. Real rock n’ roll, that will never be die. Thank God 🎤 ♥️ 🎸 🎧🎵 🔥 🎶

@@TessConnellan You'd be surprised how many of a band's early hits were actually written between 12-15. I'm sure they're in a much rougher state at that point then polished up later. If you listen to very early GVF (2014-2016) you'll know what I mean. But kids at that age are more free and less likely to follow a template. For example, the boys didn't even realize Highway Tune has no bridge between the verses/chorus until they recorded it professionally and it was pointed out to them. But it's perfect that way!

I almost fast forwarded to the time you mentioned at the beginning but something didn't feel right about that and I'm so glad I did not. I have experienced a tremendous amount of loss in my life and my heart is just breaking for you Tess. I watched the whole video through tears and I'm still crying as I type this. It is so obvious in the video how much you treasured this Yaz and it is also very obvious how incredibly special she was. I mean you both were finishing each others thoughts and sentences. Why do the really good ones always have to leave way too soon. Yaz had the best understanding of Josh's vocal performances out of any I have ever heard. It was really amazing to hear her explain his techniques and she noticed everything. I hope you're doing well and wanted to let you know that you seem so fun that I wanted to see some of your other videos so watched 'Friend Of Mine" and it was so beautiful but it hurt so deeply. Most of the time, new artists that are similar to classic artists are being compared and conclude that they are imitators which I believe is unfair. Unless we know their backstories then we can assume such an idea. Sometimes it is just a coincidence that the new artists' styles are in the same musical categories or sounds or voices or genres as the classic musicians being compared to.

Hey, a contemporary vocal student here! I've been working on my rattle for a while now (the vocal effect Josh does a lot). I know you guys called it growl here, but we mean the same thing, there are just different definitions for the effects. Anyway, my point is that I feel like things like rattle are easier to apply on higher notes? Because you were surprised he could do it on the high notes. For me, anyway, it's way easier to do it on high notes. :)

I got to see them a year or so before they started becoming more famous.. They played at this little music festival at the Tittabawassee township park in Freeland Michigan...

Jon Anderson of YES is one of the highest voices in prog rock, that came to mind when you were discussing the issue. So sad to learn of Yazmin's passing, my deepest condolences, I am sure she is angel singing in heavenly paradise. OM TAT SAT

There were other bands that had dynamic vocalists like Rush. You can hear Lee, Plant, and these kids are influenced by bands like J Geils, REO Speedwagon, Kansas, etc... etc... etc... Everyone says Zeppelin but I've only heard them tip their hat to Zeppelin on two songs.
