Dr. Powis, did Villa Lobos originally compose this piece for Cello? The beginning bass line sounds as though it should be.

Great observation! The piece is written for guitar, but Villa Lobos was also a cellist, and we can hear in his guitar pieces some melodies that were surely inspired by the cello.
