In this wide-ranging dialogue Professor Stephen Houlgate and Johannes Niederhauser discuss what it means to lead a Hegelian life - a practice which Houlgate has been enacting for the past forty years of his life. Houlgate was initially drawn more towards Nietzsche but found that with Nietzsche’s philosophy there are severe shortcomings when it comes to precise and clear vision of what institutions and the state are supposed to look like.
With Hegel we find such a clear vision spelled out. Even and especially Hegel’s magnum opus the Science of Logic forms part of this vision insofar as here the modern demand of freedom is exercised on the highest level in thought and being. The inherent dialectic in “pure Being” as it unfolds and self-complexifies and depurifies, since it cannot hold on to itself, itself reveals precisely the dialectic of reason.
We consider throughout this dialogue what it means to lead a Hegelian ethical life, what proper institutions based on mutual recognition should look like, and how we have not yet truly arrived at Hegel’s philosophy and presuppositionless thought.
It is the achievement of Stephen Houlgate of having not only translated the letter but also and especially the spirit of Hegel’s thought into English and the English spirit. Houlgate has furthermore also as one of the first and few about taken seriously and shown why we must take seriously Hegel’s claim to presuppositionless thought after Kant.

Professor Houlgate would have an interesting conversation Daniel Tutt. I've just finished his new book and he (like Losurdo) doesn't shy away from criticizing Nietzsche's less than progressive views and asks to what extent can he be reclaimed for the Left.

The categories that structure the world are: being, nothing, becoming, the idea? And this is the logical structure of the world?

At least they are concepts which are immanent to everything else.

Nice interview! Deleuze should kinda be dismissed. At least in a polemical manner, as to point out how Deleuze was stubbornly dismissive of Hegel's work throughout his whole live, getting to the point of explicitly asking people to not read Hegel.

Neitzche - opposites. Aesthetic life (self creation). But not social and political life. Sees Christianity negativelym Hegel - immanent, thing becoming it's opposite. Development. (Being comes into becoming) Not about being Vs becoming. Sees Christianity positively, about forgiveness, seeing them more than their bad acts. Live in relation with others (community important)

Not I think therefore I am But thinking therefore (interderminate) being. Doesn't being is any suppositions. Suspends that. See what thought as being turns to

You can be right in the wrong way (force the other) You can be free which then leads to in freedom. One category becoming it's own negativity and reconciling itself with the negativity Pride source of its own fall. Glory will result in disaster

Geist will aim towards rational freedom immanently but that's not guaranteed. There are contingent events that don't allow Germany to become a state, for example. Other planets may get stuck. Can also be immanent inversion. Example is medieval church - religious freedom of jesus, then church created, but then medieval church is barbaric because focussed too much on the world. Painful steps along the way

Being as sheer immediacy. The isness stripped away without implications. Not even being there (because spatial). Indeterminate (not further determined). Nothing - what that being vanishes into. Without being. Pure nothing has immediacy too as pure nothing. Implication - purity of both impurities itself through its own purity. Being into nothing, and the vanishing of these into one another is becoming

To be in finite, And then being infinite in some ways (5 ways) Series of numbers Continuity of being Bad infinite - beyond the finite/other than finite. Concept we operate with. Light as nature but different from nature (unhappy consciousness/religious consciousness) Progress to infinite (endlessly deferred, just over the horizon) True infinite - finite things relate to them in the other. Love mutual recognition citizens. Own identity including other and vice versa. Qualitiative infinity. Only by being finite. Only if die be infinite. No transcendence in Hegel. Some people disagree though.

How does Hegel understand freedom? Is this a simple voluntarism or anything more profound than that?
@marklee2588

it takes a more basic ontological form, without necessary reference to individuals, although individuals are free in his view. for hegel freedom is self-determination. providing the grounds for your own being and realising your being or concept. the freedom of individuals is tied up in a social existence, as to be a person must involve relation to another person, which leads on to his view that freedom is achieved through existing in a rational state, and ultimately through knowing God.
