I’ve seen the film of course, many years ago, but I’ve never heard this song before. Was it from the film ? Gordon McRae was one of my mum’s favourites when I was a child, so I’m very surprised I haven’t heard it before.

Gordon MacRae had such a wonderful voice . Maureen O'Hara looked so beautiful in that film especially in the above scene in the church .

How absolutely splendid! Gordon is perhaps my favorite singer, and the great film is, with The Grapes of Wrath, Ford's masterpiece. This song suits MacRae to a "t".

Gordon MacRae at his peak was unmatched by any other popular singer for me. He's not as well remembered in the UK any more unless Oklahoma or Carousel are shown on TV or perhaps the five movies he made with Doris Day. His voice was badly affected after 1964 by bouts of laryngitis, smoking and alcohol which in music terms is tragic. This recording of How Green Was My Valley is beyond beautiful. I can listen to this man all day, I just never tire of it and have about a thousand recordings by him, many from The Railroad Hour radio show.

One does not have to be Irish to feel the longing in this interpretation of this song by Gordon MacRae. The movie clip was a perfect match !! I loved the video,

@bubbbb0 Isn't it magnificent? From the moment I heard it I couldn't help but love it. The emotion he puts into it each word always amazes me. I won't deny that I've gotten a little teary-eyed while listening to it. Anyway, I'm so glad I posted it as I don't think it's anywhere else on here.

Not often without words, but this one threw me for a loop! This is probably my favorite film, but never knew I'd be lucky enough to hear Mr. MacRae sing this! I never knew there were any lyrics to the melody! Anyway, they fit like a glove, and your having combined the video clip with Gordon's lovely voice is like a gift! I'm grateful, and in your debt for posting! Thanks again. varadero

Thank you for the info. I never saw the movie - I saw Maureen O'Hara in The Quiet Man and I assumed this movie was about Ireland too. Sorry about that. Actually, I had a thorough education on the subject. My wife and I joined a Norwegian cruise last year which embarked in Southhampton, 99.9% of the cruisers were from the UK. All the countries (ex. Isle of Man) were represented on our dinner table. Our table was always the liveliest! - Romy

Wendy Arrington Ha! I will copy and paste what I just wrote to somebody somewhere above here: "How Green Was My Valley is one of my all-time favorite films. Do you find it strange that, with a title like that, it was filmed in black and white? I did when I first thought about it, then I realized the color IS there in all the images, people, places; it's everywhere. It is even overloaded with color, but only in the best of ways, while at the same time depicting the harsh and bleak conditions they lived under, which is where the black and white fit in. They all lived colorful lives, though, didn't they, in their green valley?"

did you ever see maureen o'hara in a movie called LISBON? as far as i know, it was the ONLY movie ever directed by the welsh actor, RAY MILLAND. maureen o'hara is in it with him. you might be able to get it on video. it is an okay movie. whilst it isnot exactly GONE WITH THE WIND, it has its good moments. give it a spin. BY THE WAY, IS ROMY A MAN'S NAMEOR A LADY'S NAME? the most famous romy i can think of is the late and lamented ROMY SCHNEIDER. she was a BEAUTIFUL austrian actress.
@romympanlilio12 жыл бұрын
Yes, I remember Romy Schneider and her many period love stories movies. Actually mine is short for Roman. Many friends spell it like Romi, I go by either name. I never knew Ray Milland was Welsh and that he goes that far back. I never heard of the movie Lisbon - Dial M for Murder with Grace Kelly is the only movie I can think of.

GOOD GOD!!! were there any welsh actors around at t he time to star in this lovely film? at least the t.v. series had shaan phillips and stanley baker, both welsh, in it. try to see the latter, if you can. it is even better, in some ways, than the john ford version. but see it anyway, then see the ford version. you will love BOTH versions. promise!!

What i can find in sheet music online is by Davis and Silver, as sung by Vera Lynn. It is different from this version. Anyone know where I could get this setting, or even who composed it?

This is a traditional Irish melody that Alfred Newman arranged for the opening of 'How Green was My Valley' without lyrics. You can find the music for sale online under 'An Irish Elegy' or 'The Sixpence.' It is indeed very beautiful!

romy, the movie is about wales, not ireland. for your info. wales is the oldest country, or state, in great britain. england is the YOUNGEST. and cornwall and scotland fall in between the 2 somewhere!! ireland and the isle of man are both first cousins of wales. read up on all this lovely culture on ANY celtic nationalism webpages, or try wikipedia first as an excellent introduction. next time you visit wales, the whole place will come alive with the sound of music. THOSE WELSH SING!!!

but they are both celts!!! well, pre-celt, to be correct. in fact, the first people to set foot in ireland may have been welsh!!! just check this out on the celtic nationalism pages of wikipedia and elsewhere. if they weren't welsh, they were scottish picts. check that bit out, too.
