I had the pleasure of meeting Gordon twice in my life..once as a young girl..my parents took me to see him in NYC at the Strand Theater. The next time I saw him was in Toronto and I showed him the pictures of both of us together..he made a few remarks about them and kissed me on the cheek..needless to say, I was in my glory lol.I always considered Gordon MacRae my "first love" :)

My sentiments exactly! His is/was a voice for the ages! There was nothing vocally that he could not do! I think I 1st heard him on a 33 1/3 LP record about a century ago. It was a recording of "The Desert Song," and I think the lady lead was Lucille Norman. I may be wrong. Thanks so much for writing! varadero

This is the first time I have heard Mr. MacRae, because I was brought up on Mr. Lanza, Mr. Keel and Mr. Pinza. I was born too late to meet any of them, but my mother remembers a memorable occasion in the 50s, when grandpa was in London, and decided to take the family to see a musical, which was of course a treat for them. The musical was Kismet. The singer was Mr. Keel. Mother was 12. Suddenly, she decided that her idol was not a fairy like Jean Simmons, which every schoolgirl wanted to be, but Mr. Keel making everyone feel shimmery and shivery inside! How wonderful it must have been, to spend 2 1/2 hours, hearing that beautiful voice in a top-quality production. After that, she began to save up her pocket money, instead of spending it on movie magazines and comics, so that she could come once more to see him sing. But the show closed down, before that could happen, and this is just another beautiful memory passed on to her kids and grandkids…

I sang in a community choir, (way back in the day) and we sang two Romberg songs. While the choir was singing "Desert Song", my future wife walked into the hall. She had come to meet me for a date after the rehearsal. She looked so lovely, and I was so in love with her. As she walked toward the choir, we were singing the most romantic lines. I didn't even feel like a fool as I sang just for her. My uncle, singing next to me, looked back and forth between her and me. He had probably never witnessed such a genuinely corny moment. But, he never teased me about it. She reminded me of that evening tonight; the forty-fourth anniversary of our engagement. It brought back a flood of memories to hear this song. Thanks.

Arnette Johnson I don't know when I've ever been more moved by a comment! This is so beautiful! To have even begun to inspire such a wonderful response is good enough for me! Hope I'm still under the wire to wish you both the happiest of anniversaries! You wrote "Thanks." Please, let me say or write that back to you! You're lovely message made my day! I went to see this in London when John Hanson was in it in the 60s. On the way to the theatre I was with my mum and dad and three older sisters, all squeezed together on a traffic island trying to figure out which way to go when a gentleman asked my dad I'd we were lost and could he help, he proceeded to direct us to the theatre.. As he walked away, I heard my sister whisper "that's Alex Guniness." What a gent and what a great show. Thanks for reminding me of a wonderful night with my family.

Having been gifted with such an extraordinarily beautiful voice, which - in my view - was utterly peerless in any genre of music ever heard anywhere, it's a puzzle to me that Gordon MacRae wasn't an even bigger star than he was. Obviously, it's pointless comparing two such different performers, but I have no doubt at all that Frank Sinatra would have loved to be able to cope with the more challenging songs that Gordon seemed to handle so effortlessly. And even if Sinatra could somehow manage to reach the notes convincingly, no-one could ever match that incredible richness of tone that separated Mr. MacRae from every other performer. How lucky are we fans of GM to have KZbin to remind us what made him so very special? Thank you for posting this gem.

I adored both of their voices, what a team Kathryn Grayson Gordon MacRae, I heard a story a long time ago, (Not sure if it is true or not) but Gordon got his big break singing in films, when Frank Sinatra walked off of a particular set, as mentioned heard it back in the forties. Apparently, (the story went, ) that Gordon filled Frank Sinatra's spot, and never looked back. I think Mr Macrae was little known at that time, to repeat back in the early forties, sadly that makes me 80 There will never be the likes of these stars ever again, sadly.

Clive Mainwaring: Gordon MacRae got his big break in films after being seen by a Warner Brothers talent scout in 1948. His first film was a boxing drama called The Big Punch. Gordon was first a big band singer from 1941 with the Horace Heidt Orchestera for two years. He got a radio gig soon after this filling in for Frank Sinatra on a radio show but joined the Air Force after Pearl Harbour and had to quit, so I understand. You may be confusing this story with the time in 1956 when Frank Sinatra walked out on the first day of filming Carousel and in a panic, the producer contacted Gordon MacRae who had just had a huge hit with Oklahoma!. I have heard two stories, that Shirley Jones phoned Gordon to ask him, and that Oscar Hammerstein also phoned him.

@WrestleNiceGuy121 I agree with you! The "studio" days were best for young, talented singers, dancers, etc! I feel they'd all had training before their immersion into the studio system. Said system probably provided them with finer teachers, managed to refine their voices, and a "Gordon MacRae" was what we saw! Must agree with your mention of weird vibratos, etc. The problem is that many performers of today give us nothing but their vocal manipulations; nothing to do with the real melody!

I don't think there are voices like this any more. Also the music these days is not as good as this.

@1915fas Thanks for your mention, and good luck with your Gordon imitations! I've always thought he was one of the finest singers of the '50s. Please keep in touch, and very good to hear from you!

I agree. This part should be sung by a rich, mellow baritone like Gordon´s. His timbre is a shade darker than Nelson Eddy´s which is a plus! To my ears, that is!

The operettas of the early 20th century were gems culled from the musical palette of infinite wealth. So much melodic beauty; harmony that seems to warm, then treat as well as entrant. It was an age of duets, choruses, and solos. The entertainment of moral responsibility and of love eternal.

@havilland18 I remember having an LP of this when I was very young. The lady in question is/was Lucille Norman. The album was great, but nothing compared to what these 2 performed here. Thanks so much; happy to hear from you!

I’m not a fan of Sigmund Romberg but what a fantastic singer Gordon MacRae was. I think his best film was ‘ Carousel’. ‘ My Boy Bill’ is so incredibly difficult to sing. He was absolutely pitch perfect.

My desert is waiting; Dear, come there with me. I'm longing to teach you Love's sweet melody. I'll sing a dream-song to you, Painting a picture for two: Blue heaven and you and I, And sand kissing a moonlit sky. A desert breeze whisp'ring a lullaby, Only stars above you To see I love you. Oh, give me that night divine And let my arms in yours entwine. The desert song calling, Its voice enthralling Will make you mine. Blue heaven and you and I, And sand kissing a moonlit sky. A desert breeze whisp'ring a lullaby, Only stars above you To see I love you. Oh, give me that night divine And let my arms in yours entwine. The desert song calling, Its voice enthralling Will make you mine.

Good one! Emmy is so lovely and definitely has the pipes! Another issue; last time I saw Josh, he looked a little overweight. Hollywood's famous for diets! Methinks I've got to get back to my New York roots! Great idea, and thank you.
