I'm a Celtic fan and Atletico are the dirtiest team I've ever seen at Celtic Park Jimmy Johnstone was kicked up and down the park that night and almost 50 years on the tackles from Atletico's hatchet men were nothing short of wanton brutality

Atletico was half South American, many of their players and the coach were from Argentina; they used to play "differently" there.

Its funny how things change. In the 70s and 80s, Spanish football was known for its violence - they couldn't play without hacking each other to death! Nowadays, they are the master purveyors of the beautiful game.

Spain always had very technical players, but yes, violent football had a dominant presence since 1970 to 1984. But don’t underestimate things just because of this horrible match: that Atlético was a very good team in the 70’s, with some legendary players in the pitch such as Luis Aragonés, Adelardo, Luis Pereira, Dirceu or Garate

Atletico had many players from South America, especially from Argentina: Ayala, Bezerra, Panadero Díaz, etc. The coach was also from Argentina. They were known then in Spain for not being keen on fair-play. Atletico was not a typical Spanish team.
