I still keep up with Classic Game Room and I'm so grateful because I love that I can find an old CGR review for a game I just discovered in 2016 to determine if I want to buy it or not. All hail Lord Karnage!

The game is very good, has a decent story and charming characters, but the fatal flaw is the *_astronomic_* encounter rate that can really get on your nerves later on. It's also quite easy and very few boss battles will pose a threat if you're decently equipped. Still, it's worth a shot if you're a fan of RPG games.

Not only that, but every video I've seen so far on this game the reviewer didn't apparently know how to pronounce the word "sigil". After hearing it pronounced "seagull" for about the 18th time I have to admit even I'm a little bit annoyed.

***** That's the reason why I hate not being rich & have to buy consoles much much later after the release. Most of the good games are very old & you can only get them used, which can be a very difficult to find. Especially here in Finland, that doesn't have even close as huge gaming market as in USA or Japan for example.

That may be so... I agree with you that this game would seem more at home on the Super Nintendo than the NES but the 16-bit RPGs still followed the same archetype as was established on 8-bit systems. There was no fundamental shift between the 8-bit and 16-bit eras. I think it's perfectly valid to call this sort of game an 8-bit style RPG because all of the basic elements from games like Dragon Quest remain.

I'd say it is closer to a 16 bit RPG. 8 bit JRPG's had more trivial menus and much less intricate story.

This is a good video. I played this game for more than 50 hours. It is very glitchy and you encounter way too many mobs when trying to travel, a very old school feel. That being said this game is definitely worth giving a try and by that I mean play it for at least a few hours, just remember to save often. The main reason I loved this game was the Story and the music. Combat system is good, easily comparable to chrono trigger. which i love but i would not compare the game entirely just based on the combat system.

just as an easy reference for anybody the original versions of Space Invaders, Pac Man, Tetris, Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros etc were in the 8 bit era, the magnavox odyssey and atari 2600 are 8 bit era consoles, the change from 8 bit to 16 bit was quite a leap foward...

This Final Fantasy you're talking is VI, III in the ocidental release for the SNES. Maybe you would like the Lunar series. It's pretty similar to Black Sigil. Also Phantasy Star 3 and 4!

... what are you on about? Comix Zone is ahead of it's time in graphical style with a unique comic book aesthetic that I would be reluctant to call 'retro' or 'old-school' let alone anything like this games art style. I'm not even going to TOUCH the mix up/confusion between Final Fantasy II and VI.

Those were inspirations stated by Graffiti when they were developing this game... its a shame this didn't see a lot of love, 'cuz it really is a great game. It draws a lot upon the RPGs, on the SNES in particular, of the early to mid-90s. Truly the golden era of RPGs including games like Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana/Evermore, Seiken Densetsu 3, Final Fantasy III and Dragon Quest, among many others. But yeah, I really enjoyed this game. Shame it was overlooked.

@konataGAMERZ It actually makes sense. Everyone in that world can use magic and the first person to be born without magic powers managed to cause massive destruction to their world, according to legend. Since the main character is the second to be born without magic, fear of the first resides. Basically, for them to meet someone who can't use magic would be like for any of us to wake up in bed and see Cthulhu laying there. Quite alien and pretty scary due to legends.
@laughingfurry
@laughingfurry 13 жыл бұрын
@konataGAMERZ I don't know. There's other ways for a villain to be powerful. Comic books prove this a lot with villains like Lex Luther and The Joker. There's also various anime where the enemy isn't something that can use magic, but someone with incredible strength, Ki, and/or Psy. The magicless characters of Black Sigil obviously have great power not tied to magic. The ability to fight without relying on magic is what's intimidating.

@VayuPurana No, I'm not attacking you nor was Chrono Trigger a "Mainstream or overrated" when I first played it. I loved it then and I love it now. It's fine that you don't think the story or characters are kick ass. I don't expect everyone to like everything that I do but your trying to make an argument out of nothing. Chrono Trigger was and is still a great game, just because something better has come out since doesn't nullify that.

The many sidequests of that game give much background detail on each character not to mention they all literally have their own ending. Of course it's not actually an 8-bit game, it's on the DS, what he was saying was that the game follows the style of the old 8-bit RPGs, which it does, 2d graphics, top-down viewpoint, random battle encounters, turn based gameplay, EXP/HP/MP system, sure the graphics are updated (a little) but other than that how is it NOT like an 8-bit style RPG?

I tried to play this game but the battles killed it. At least early on. The difficulty for the game was high but only because your characters on the screen can't move through each other and sometimes the "arenas" are small so the characters in the back just can't move. You're left with one person who can attack in the battle and it happens often. Not to mention, there's so little mana and health pool. I wanted to like this game. I'll look into it again...
