Your comments on Aston ownership can be applied to pretty much all high end exotic cars that are +20 years old. If you want the pleasures that they bring you must also endure the eccentricities. Personally I love getting the spanners out and working on my DB9. It's always rewarding and I love having a deeper understanding of how it all fits together and works. AM parts prices are ridiculously expensive but as you say spend time researching and you can often discover the original component manufacturer and replace at a fraction of the cost.

I'm impressed you can work on a DB9. That's from an age where electronics became a much bigger thing. I think DB9 is also a big step up in lots of ways. Remember the top gear race and it was a fantastic grand tourer

I honestly think in the right colour and with the right wheels this is one of the most beautiful cars on the road today, I'd love to be a millionaire and be able to afford to buy one and custom engineer the bugs out of it.

The definition of an optimist, is a man who thinks he can 'just' afford to run an Aston Martin! They really ought to be called, 'Aston Moneypit.'

I owned one for over 7 years and everytime I climbed into it I'd grin like a kid. I drove it daily in and out of London, and every afternoon when I stopped at the lights by Buckingham Palace out came the cameras as the tourists clicked away. Yes, it had an enduring problem with the internal cabin light coming on randomly which Aston couldn't fix, so I ended up just taking the fuse out. But for long journeys it was a joy. I only sold it when the rear axle started to make the sort of noises you don't want a car like this making. Brilliant head-turner of a car. And yes, I had the James Bond soundtrack CD permanently in slot 5 of the stereo...

As a DB7 (1997) owner, I can truly say that ownership has been rewarding. Yes, there are quirks that you need to either live with or repair (at a costly price), however if you take good care of this car, it will reward you with years of enjoyment.

It's certainly a costly ownership experience...

Much as I love the Aston Martin DB7, I'm not sure that I actually want one, though I can't really explain why. I think I prefer it as a unicorn. Something to admire from afar, but not a dream I particularly want to chase.

As a DB7V owner I couldn’t disagree more tbh, I find it comes down to use. I’ve done nearly 12,000 miles in mine since Christmas and never suffer a light or major issue all I’ve had to deal with is what you’d expect from a daily driven 22 year old car… when they sit and only do small drives, they break!

I think aston are stunning but I have owned both aston and Jag XK and the Jag XK is the better car and a third of the cost to repair I have one of the last XKs made and its a keeper

fair comments; i have both an XJS and a DB7 GT; every time I consider taking one out, almost daily, its the XJS wins; much easier to drive, and gets way more attention (if thats what you want i suppose) and to be honest the Jaguar V12 is a nicer revvier engine that really howls (mines a manual conversion); the clutch is way easier also. However something about turning up in an Aston...

Pay the extra and buy a DB9. That's a proper AM and not a reheated XJS with Ford bits on display.

Great looking car, but it sounds as though a nice Jag XK8/XKR is a far better, and cheaper prospect, the XK8 handles and holds the road well too.

PS- I recently bought an immaculate early 4.0 XK8, which has a more opulent interior than the DB7, a superior engine and driving experience to the 6 cylinder DB7, and costs a fraction of the purchase price of a DB7. ;)

Both DB7 and Jaguar XK8 were based on the XJS platform. As much As I love Astons, the sister XK8 is a better car as far a quality is concerned

The only thing Aston Martin is the badge. It’s engineered and built by TWR in an old XJ220 factory in Oxfordshire. Made up of Jaguar, Mazda and Ford parts. Say what you like about Aston Martin but they wouldn’t let a real Aston out of Newport Pagnel factory with an interior that bad.

True words, worst car I have ever had, once did 500 miles without a warning light. Abismal build quality, tight and cramped, bugger all boot space, no room for feet.Uncomfortable seats Overpriced parts, and pretentious owners and specialists. Prefer my Defender, which is way more reliable, and that says a lot.
