I ordered it with the big wraparound tail spoiler which wasn’t a Vauxhall part so it had to have the tailgate reinforced and the spoiler had to be painted to match the car. I loved my MG turbo when it worked but whenever I went to an away game following Forest I as often as not came back with the AA but with the Calibra I had the same performance but also the reliability and disc brakes rather than the bonkers rear drum brakes of the MG 😂

I had the privilage to be a mechanic on the European press launch of the Ford Probe. We were based at the Carlton hotel in Cannes, France. We had 10 16v red ones (like the one you tested) and 20 24v (V6) mettalic blue cars. Journalists came from all over Europe during our 5 weeks there, including Jeremy Clarkson and the Top Gear team. One positive memory was how smooth the V6 engine was. You started it up, even from cold, and it just purred. There was a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow in the hotel garage. The V6 Probe made the Rolls sound like a traction engine. A negative memory was that the sun roof was OK for posing around Cannes. But above 50 mph it was horrible. So noisy you had to close it. However, it was a great experience to see how Ford did a major launch. I suspect the lack of sales was caused by over-pricing it. The cost of the cars in the States was about half what it was marketed for in the UK.

I owned a Calibra 2.0 16V back in 1997 - 2004 when I was in my mid/late 20's. Bought it just after my first deployment to Bosnia with SFOR as at the time I had enlisted with the Royal Dutch Army and was stationed in Germany just between Hamburg and Bremen. Used to drive up and down from the west of The Netherlands every weekend. (Petrol for NATO military personal was very cheap). I loved the Calibra as it was incredibly fast. I did have had some work done on it though such a full front to end (Remus) sports exhaust, chip-tuned, K&N sports air filter assembly and finally also a replacement pipe for the catalytic converter. It was like a rocket ship and had it maxed at 270km/h on the German Autobahn. All my colleagues in their BMW's even the 325i and other sports card only saw my taillights. Still miss the car till this day and if I can ever get my hands on one again and my wife lets me, I'll be back in my mid 20's, sure bold, fat and grumpy but will feel like a 24y.o again.

Unfortunately, most were erased from history in 2009 during the scrapping scheme. It's a sad thought. Mine was stolen and never seen again, but I would have kept it. Unique car. I nearly chopped my fingers off on the pop up lights and the immobiliser would cut out at any time (although easy solder fix) but the thing would drive forever without any issues once the immo was fixed.
@DjNikGnashers Жыл бұрын
You have obviously not driven many cars in your lifetime if you think a damn Probe has 'phenomenal' handling , LOL .... Even older designed cars of that time, such as the Alfasud, were MUCH better handling. Something like a 1992 BMW E36 M3 was literally miles ahead than the very best Probe, much more power, better chassis, better suspension, better quality, rear wheel drive like a proper performance car. The Probe was a wimpy thing, for people who 'think it's a sports car' but don't really understand what real sports cars are. Same as the Hyundai coupe, people sticking loud exhausts on them, yet they were absolute crap.

I like the Probe, but for me, it's the Calibra every single time. Such neat lines. Still such a lovely looking car. Much nicer range of engines and drivetrains. Just a shame about those 4D plates on this particular example! NB The X20XEV is not a red top, that'll be the earlier C20XE with the L shaped spark plug cover. 2.0 Turbo was only 4x4 although you could get the NA engine also with a 4x4 (8v). A 2.5 V6 was also available. It's based on the Cavalier GSi. Unlike the regular Cavaliers, the Cavalier GSi had IRS whereas the standard Cavalier had trailing rear arms. The Calibra had that IRS system irrespective of engine designated. It was only the 8v 2wd Calibra which garnered 'the most aerodynamic production car', the 16v models had a slightly higher drag coefficient - something to do with the engine trays I believe.
@martinp8427 Жыл бұрын
I've read somewhere over the internet that the 2l 8v engine Calibra had a smaller radiator opening on the front bumper and other "aerodynamic trim" compared to the rest of the Calibra models. That was the reason why only the 8v had 0.26 Cd and the rest of the lineup had 0.28 Cd. You could also get a C20XE 4x4.

The V6 Calibra certainly was not "stonking". Rather a wallowy, understeery pudding of a car. More a GT type cruiser which it was OK at. Dynamically they were never lauded when new, but then the Cavalier platform was already old and far from state of the art. I would argue that dynamically the MX-6 platform of the Probe was more sophisticated and the Mazda V6 was a much nicer, sweeter engine than the Vauxhall unit. Calibra was a handsome thing in it's original iteration though, far better than the Probe.

The Ford Probe was part of the then joint venture and ownership of Ford of part of Mazda. Ford built a new plant in the late 80's in Flat Rock, Michigan (just off I-75 south of Detroit, a former forgings plant site) to build the Mazda 626 Sedan, the MX-6 Coupe and the Ford Probe. The Ford Probe while originally intended to replace the Mustang caused such a stir that the Mustang was revised and kept. I had a 2nd Gen Probe a 24 valve (4 Cyl) with the 4 speed Automatic from new in Sept. 1992 to Jan. 2000. In many ways it was a good car to me with decent fuel mileage, handled well, looked good (until the clear coat paint went bad), reliable with its part Japan DNA. The price of mine was about $20,000 USD (about $30K today). When the Probe was discontinued in 1998, part of the production at that same plant was replaced with the Mercury/Ford Cougar Coupe (I also had one with the 2.5 L Ford V-6, automatic, in silver) that had a base from the Ford Contour/Mercury Mystique/Ford Europe Mondao 2nd Gen) and the Mazda 6 Sedan and (in small numbers wagons/estates). I also had Mazda 6 (2006-3.0 V-6, 6 Sp. Automatic). In the mid-2000-teens, the plant shifted to making the Mustang, some hybrid Fusions (Mondao to you) and eventually some Ford/Lincoln crossover models today.

Wikipedia says there‘s only around 5000 Calibras still on german roads, so my hopes of finally seeing one aren‘t very big, but I will keep my eyes open every time I leave the house. 👀 Sometimes I even think about whether I should buy one once I have a driver’s license, but every time I come to the conclusion that it wouldn‘t be a good idea. The rust, the spare part situation, the tuner cars, not having a usable garage, the car probably not having enough space to put a bicycle in it - I don’t think it would be a good idea… but the imagination of cruising around in it and listening to the engine sound is still great. 😌

@_B.M_ Жыл бұрын
Red top engine is enough to give it to the Calibra. One of the best engines ever! At the time, nobody could get anywhere near 150bhp from a 2.0 engine. Many couldn't even get that with a Turbo added.

I agree. The one in this video doesn’t have the red top frustratingly 😩

Yes, this is a later Ecotec version. My Dad had a 4x4 16v with the red top in the 90’s and I used to love the sound of the engine! 😎

The Calibra is undoubtedly the better car BUT, a late Probe with a 2.5 V6, full leather and that amazing metallic purple paint colour they did - I'd have that all day!

I've got a Probe 24V so bit biased on this one ! I think the probe is more unusual looking which is the main reason i prefer it and it has pop up headlights !

I loved the styling with my 24V back then, too. But the Probe had FWD and with 163 hp it was underpowered so i sold it after 2 years. I still love pop ups, thats why i bought a corvette.
@londonpirates Жыл бұрын
Many years ago I had money to buy a decent Calibra and didn’t even consider the Probe as it just didn’t have the styling of the Calibra. I did however closely consider the Corrado but the Calibra offered a bit more for the same money. Calibra still looks great today wish I still had it.

I like both cars, I never knew the Probe was based on the Mazda MX6 platform, I like the Probes exterior and those pop up lights. An old mate of mine in the 2000’s owned a lovely metallic blue Calibra with white leather interior and it had an 8 valve 2 litre engine coupled with an autobox, I borrowed it for a few days and loved it, it was nice to drive, comfortable and the interior is nicer than the one in the probe, because of this it’s the Calibra for me.

Watching this video, I prefer the Probe with that early mazda look with the pop-ups - I mean, who doesn't love pop-ups?! But, back in 90s (when I was in my 20s) I remember lusting over the Calibre - and although I remember the Probe, I certainly don't remember wanting one. My all-time lust was a MK4 Cortina, 2 door, in Gold with Starsky & Hutch style wheels and a black vinyl roof. Sadly, I never got to own any of these cars lol

IV never been a vauxhall fan, but it's the calibra all day long, a school friends mum had a Red H reg from new, not sure the exact model but I loved going in it on the odd school run and to the skating rink at Altrincham. Maybe one day il buy one as a project car.

I worked at a Ford dealership as a mechanic in the 90's and was sent to Daventry on the Ford Probe Introduction training course. I remember how ugly the alloys were on the 4 cyl version and how cool the V6 looked. Oh and by the way, The V6 Probe gets my vote as i don't like the Calibra bumper and headlamps

The Probe should have been RWD. Even more so that they were first sold in the U.S. They were marketed as a 'sporty' GT but failed to deliver on both fronts, as it wasnt sporty nor a grand tourer. Mazda and Mitsubishi at the time were having quite a bit of success with their sporty coupés and GT's, so Ford wanted to jump on that bandwagon. But drive a mid 90's Mitsubishi 3000GT/GTO and you will instantly feel the improvement in build quality, ride, handling, performance and reliability. When it comes to FWD coupés from the 90's, the two that I liked was the Pininfarina designed 406 coupé. Back when Peugeot made desirable cars. The others were the mk4 and mk5 Honda Preludes.

Wild how the european probe 4 banger looks Almost excatly like the american 6 cyl gt...At first I though u were reviewing the gt... 93-94 gts were very stiffly sprung, had Aggressive exhausts , less emissions..they handled Taught... the variant you were driving, although it Looks like a usa gt, was likely fitted with the soft 4 banger's springs and struts....would have been cool to see you do a review of these both with their 6 cyl versions...the gt probe is a totally different beast.

Slightly weird comparison really. I am old enough to remember the original debate. The Probe was not well received. It was regarded as opportunistic and a somewhat wasted opportunity. The Calibra was seen much more positively but lovely as it was, it was regarded as dynamically compromised. It was the VW Corrado which received the attention… but it was expensive and did not come of age until the VR6 appeared later. The Honda Prelude was admired too… but then came the thieves who nicked them all. Then, as now, a £20 yellow (or red) steering wheel lock could have saved the day.
@davekennedy6315Ай бұрын
Those steering wheel locks were a joke, a car thief would have that busted in mere seconds! Absolutely ZERO deterrent value, that's why insurance companies never even mentioned them!

I had a probe (snigger), but by then it was old and I'd been looking for a runner, and like something a bit different. It was a nice enough drive, after all 300,000 and odd sales is more than 200,000 odd, however they're achieved. Bit expensive new by the sounds of it though.

I've owned an Opel Manta, 8V Astra GTE's, a Cavalier CDi. Then a Cavalier SRi with a red top (what an engine!). Always wanted a Calibra, such a great looking car. And with the Red top or Turbo (or the V6) had decent performance too. Could I swap my OG Saab 93 SE for one though?! 🤔
