In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 10,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 100 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com

I said it in the post game interview, but I'll say it one more time: CTWC was the best three days of my life so far. The joy of meeting so many people and having so much fun with everyone playing a 30-year-old block game that we all love for some reason can't be stated in words. Thank you everyone ❤❤❤ Love you all

also since I didn't get a chance to shill myself in the post game interviews: I stream at twitch.tv/ericicx, and I'll be trying to stream at least once a week at 7:30 PM eastern time, either on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday, depending on my college workload. Might not be able to use a mic depending on the circumstances, but it'll still be fun either way. Hope to see you there! ❤

Dude! Congratulations for 2nd place!! After that first game I knew one thing: I would kinda feel sorry for whoever gets silver here because both of you totally deserve the title! After one more game I actually wanted *you* to win because of the superior stacking you were consistently showing. Also the way you got out of bad situations in "kill"screen was just mind blowing and super entertaining to watch. Must have been exhausting! Congrats again and thanks for the show :)

@@xenotypos I think it still matters because having a higher score at Lv. 29 gives a cushion of sorts for when you top out that your opponent has to chase down. i hate to say it but tetris is probably done. i‘ve watched every single ctwc and i enjoyed every single one of it and it was so amazing to see the game and the players evolve. we had this jonas and harry rivalry with jonas always one step ahead and being the only player to pull of great plays at high speed under pressure, the laughs „boom, tetris for jeff“ gave us. these were times when maxing out was still something special. then the maxouts happened more frequently, the hypertappers entered the stage and we saw some amazing matches between jonas and joseph or joseph and greentea. those are the first that come to my mind. i think when people went for high scores but still were barely able to survive at the killscreen was peak tetris, a growing community, high scoring, great plays, mistakes here and there, comebacks and a lot of drama. it was the next logical step that people master the killscreen and i want to stress how impressive it is that there are people that have mastered the game to a point where they can play at the killscreen relatively relaxed considering where people were just a couple of years ago but it‘s the exact same thing that ruins it for me. now all the scoring doesn‘t matter anymore because we are all just waiting for the killscreen to see who can go longer for singles and doubles? no thanks. tetris has reached its limit but it was a great journey.

When the second position is a jaw dropping performance, 10 out of 10 out of space... Man, what a final match up is was ! I'm following the CTWC since the Boom Tetris for Jeff! era. Never thought the evolution of that esport would be that spectacular!

I think next year CTWC might as well make 2 or 3 divisions for Rollers, Hypertappers and DAS in order to preserve the "Classic" Tetris. So that players who enjoys playing it without having to practice a specific technique but being a good construction worker. And also, If there is no change in the game, every championships will become endurance battle. That is just pure headache for players.

Its rarein sports to see two competitors so evenly matched. Amazing spectacle to behold. Jonas would be so proud of the magnitude of progression in such a short time. Good job boys.

Agreed. It’s still impressive but only for hardcore fan. Nobody really wants to watch level 29 singles for 20 minutes. Ctwc was great when it was 80s90s kids trying to relive childhood and play in a tournament in their mid 30s. Now it’s just autistic zoomers holding stuffed animals breaking the game

Guys, I definitely want you to know that you're much bigger than you think! Every year since Jonas vs Joseph we watch your championship in Russian translation (it's a bit funny commenting but we are serious as hell knowing all about hypertapping, rolling and maxing out!!) but with millions of views! It's so great to see how Tetris championship grows bigger with every year. Eric and Fractal, great job! Big thanks to everyone who contributed organizing it!

If only I could afford to be there, i definitely would. as a player (unlikely) or audience, i would be stoked for it. Won't happen anytime soon though. This is so amazing, been watching comp. Tetris since Jonas vs. Harry, and i'm lost for words how much it has progressed, but also how awesome the atmo and vibe is right there.

This is amazing to watch. The top 2 keep pushing the bar higher and higher each year. KZbin's algorithm first recommended a CTWC video to me in 2016, I watched it and was hooked. Who can forget the Boom Tetris for Jeff era, Jonas racking up championship after championship, and then Joseph coming on scene with two titles of his own and ushering in a wave of new talent. This tournament is awesome to watch every year and I hope to attend and meet some of the competitors in person in 2023.

This is just incredible! This must be the biggest leap ever between CTWC Tournaments. The perseverance after kill screen becoming more and more decisive might encourage players to change their strategies over the years concentrating more and more in the endgame. What a time to be alive!

You should change the name of the tournament from "Classic Tetris World Championship" to "Line It Out Post 29 world championship" (LIO29WC) Amazing match, but 37:20 to 47:49 was painful to watch. It will become even worse in the years to come when post 29 play becomes more prevalent.
