I had a guy that I worked with his method to the part up that I still use was to put it in a propane barbecue usually about 4 hours before starting weld then leave it in then slowly over the next 5 or 6 hours start turning the heat down till its off then leave it till cool to touch since I started doing it that way I haven't had any problems

I know a lot of older guys stick to oxy-fuel welding for cast, but stick welding it is substantially faster in my opinion, especially for crack repairs. You follow to same preheat and post cool steps and use NiRod-52 as a filler. Never had any problems, the only pain with stick welding it is having to hit it with the wire wheel real quick between passes to knock the slag off.

Anyone can learn any sort of welding by choosing to PRACTICE. Cast iron isn't hard to find so give it a go and have fun learning. (Never practice on anything you care about.) Oxy-acetylene gear is affordable as are used cylinders (know what you can exchange near your location). OA is the most versatile process and can do more than most mechanics know. Torch welding teaches puddle control so it's all win even if you mostly use other processes, and a torch doesn't require shore power.

welding engineer adding that a spark test with a grinder can tell us a lot about the nature of the casting, and that nickle alloy SMAW wires can be used to arc weld iron. bronze alloy SMAW wire designed for brazing brass fire hydrants to steel water pipe can be used to braze build up iron castings, and has a similar mechanical strength and machinability. lime is typically used in a "lime box" to delay the cooling process and reduce cooling cracks.

With any type of welding process cast iron needs to be preheated, or it will crack along the weld

Don that before. I used a good size pile of hardwood coals to keep the work hot . Bare cast iron square rods Oxweld flux and a cupple pairs of welding glove. Because it gets hot.
