I have those growth mindset posters up in my classroom and we love them! I use them with my high school biology and chemistry students and I do the growth mindset scenarios station activity first week of school and hope the students reflect on these as they venture through those challenging senior science years. I try to refer to them when I hear those statements through the tough lessons.

You should think about making the 30th spot a cool down spot. It can include stress relieving tools and an area for the student to just relax. I have 2 spots like this in my classroom with a fun little sign and the students really benefit from being able to seclude them self. I put a wiggle chair in those spots too. If your students are responsible enough the spot and student using the spot shouldn’t be looked down on. In my classroom it is enough of a routine by now that they know that they can go to one of the spots whenever they need and sometimes I escort them to it. Just a thought :-)

Thank you for your fun videos! I was fifth-grade departmentalized for the first time last year and I was also worried about a few students’ backs to the front of the room. I was also used to one class all day. But as the year went on, I realized that there is more student talk then teacher talk in the higher grades especially in blocks. For me, I found it more necessary to have them in groups for teamwork and discussion rather then they face the front. I didn’t always teach from the front. I walked around, I taught from different locations in the room. Sometimes I invited those to join me on the floor up front with clipboards if I was giving whole group instruction. And quite honestly 70% of the class time was spent in group collaborations. If it was me, I’d group them together to save space and facilitate student discourse. I hope you find your ideal setup!

Love your videos! I have had the dreaded triangle desks for 5 years. I might have a solution for you! I have used every combo possible and I find groups of 4 are the only things that prevent the "desk slide." You'll learn what I'm talking about after school starts. Try moving your desks so the middle line faces your main instructional area. So some desks are more of an X than a cross. I hope that makes sense. It also helps to keep student chairs from touching.

I use the crate system for turning in as well and love it! One tip is to have students turn in their work vertical instead of horizontal so that all you have to do is push the files together and pick up the papers. That way they are in alphabetical order too! It worked really well for me as a fifth grade teacher and it was easy to see who didn’t turn something in. Hope this helps!

With my 6th graders I have a turn in tray for every class that’s just stacked and one of the first people in the room just switch to the next tray. Papers they turn in go straight from that tray to another one for their class on my floor at the front of the room. Any time they are doing individual or group work I just grab the tray and start passing stuff out. It means I actually move around the room more and they can just ask a question as I come by. I don’t put grades on papers, I just check whatever is right and keep track of grades online where they can see immediate feedback. Sometimes I might have the early finishers for something silently go pass stuff back. This frees up my time sorting papers into crates and frees up space since I can just kick the trays under my desk if we are sitting in the floor to work( it’s a reward they get for working hard and staying at appropriate volume). My students all have supplies in one area and just go by row or group to get their stuff. I call for cleanup and by a couple of weeks I. They know that the floor should be spotless and materials looking great. They also know that desks must be straight and everyone seated. This is usually right before dismissal so these things must be done before I let them leave. I usually get a couple of more responsible students who lead the cleanup and sweep the floor and they get rewards. I make it very clear that going above and beyond in cleanup gets little candy treats or tickets for things like slime. They are responsible for keeping up with the neatness. I don’t hold back. One speck can keep them waiting for dismissal.

Your classroom is so cute, and I love the Cricut letters! In my room, I try not to worry if there are several open wall spaces because I’ll usually utilize those to display student work once the school year starts.
