Good thing you went with The Institute Route first, since the route was VERY unrewarding for most players (like me during my first playthrough). I deleted my save and decided to NEVER give The Institute a chance other than giving the refugees a new home on the surface after I went Nuclear on them. Sure wished they could've restored the cut content where you encountered the synth version of the SS's spouse and have the story go from there and deal with the SS's spouse's horror dealing with the reality of the fact that the synth realized that the synth's life and memories were fake, basically a repeat of Nick Valentine's story when he escaped The Institute with DiMA. Personally, I think it's CRUEL to have the Synth Shaun live FOREVER as a boy that NEVER GROWS UP.

See... I had a couple problems with siding with the Institute... One of them was "Father" releasing his parent into the wilderness without info, supplies or expectations of survival.. Then expected us to welcome him with open arms... then he gets mad when we don't agree with him... Also when we got "kicked out" and told to not interfere with the Institute plans the first thing Father does is attacks us without trying a couple times to persuade us to join. Then gets offended that we tear it down around his ears.

I agree. As soon as Sean called us an “experiment of sorts” I never sided with the institute at all but once just to see what would happen, and even then I never really enjoyed siding with them.

@@cashtechy Funny part is that father tells us to stay out of their way and the first thing they do is attack.. My first play through I was more then happy to avoid them and see what faction forced me to engage... After all the Institute up until then was only mild annoyance in the commonwealth. When they got aggressive is when they opened themselves up to destruction.

I'm a little disappointed in how this story ends. I wish that, as director, the Sole Survivor was able to actively choose how the Institute proceeds, whether they want to continue and contribute to the experimenting, and retention of synths, as they have done, or if they want to give synths more free-will, or to contribute to actual meaningful help and preservation of above-ground life. The institute is at a very unique place, where they can be the saviors or the destroyers of those above ground, and I just feel like with how it ends, and really the lack of further story development, it seems to lean more towards how The Institute has been running the whole time; the destroyers of those above ground for their own preservation.
@senhowler

You would never have a choice. The only reason why the Institute seemed to take commands from Father is because they agreed with his overall direction. They would never follow someone who tried to radically change them and take away the future they see for themselves and only themselves.

You forgot Hancock as a companion that hates the Institute and should not continue as a companion. I get that they didn't want to deny players their companions, but I think from a lore perspective, Nick, Piper, Hancock, and Preston should stop following you.
@alpacalover0
@alpacalover0 Жыл бұрын
Piper thinks it over after her initial outburst and once you have max affinity she writes an article saying that you're leading the Institute in a better direction so the Institute might be part of the Commonwealth's future now. Preston doesn't really desire the total destruction of the Institute, just an end to their aggression against the Commonwealth. As head of both the Institute and the Minutemen, that's one of the few things you could probably enact without question, and Preston feels like destroying the Brotherhood with the Institute has saved the Commonwealth from a big threat either way. Nick is pretty shocked and disappointed, but he comes to grips with it probably after a talk with Piper about things (and hey, he says he wishes they could answer a few questions for him even after completing Far Harbor, so maybe it's not too terrible a situation for him). And Hancock...well, you did just wipe the Brotherhood off the Commonwealth's map for good. Like with Preston, I'm sure he can tolerate it because he trusts you to change things over time and at least stop all the infiltration and kidnappings the SRB does. Rest of the companions are either just glad you achieved your goals (Cait, MacCready, X6-88, Porter Gage), are dead (RIP Deacon and Danse), or are apathetic about who governs the Commonwealth Wasteland (Strong, Ada, Curie, Dogmeat, Longfellow).

As I watched him die I felt no sympathy, not even pity. My mourning was for myself alone. My own loss. A loss that had occurred long before he breathed his last. This aged, cynical husk of a man was not my son, and he never could have been. This person was the poorest, the cruelest of substitutes, a sickening joke of fate, and ultimately, nothing more than another passing reminder of all that was taken from me. Perhaps worse, all that could be taken from me. How could I hope to truly care for a single source of happiness in this life ever again? Rage, terror, and despair were my future. My destiny. I pressed the muzzle of that brutal .44 to my temple. It was comfortingly cold. I’d seen what a weapon of this caliber could do to a body. My lovely little head would be splattered across the room within a few moments. But the mess would be someone else’s to deal with. And I would be free of mine. My index finger brushed that fragile hair trigger. A single, shuddering sob could be all it would take to end this. Yet, none came. I gradually became aware of a presence. Cait stood nonchalantly in the doorway. How long had she been there? We locked eyes and she slowly nodded and sat down on the bed, pushing aside my son’s lifeless legs. “No respect for the dead?” I asked her, verging on hysterical laughter. Her uncharacteristically gentle expression told me she understood much. “No more than they deserve.” I had lost perspective. Who the hell was I to let her down? Slowly I lowered my weapon and nodded back at her with an ashamed twinkle in my eye. We needed each other, and we would see this journey through to the end.

@EmperorRyu1
@EmperorRyu1 Жыл бұрын
1. Synth consciousness is never confirmed. You can argue; if it looks, smells and sounds like a Human - we should give it the benefit of the doubt. And I am inclined to agree - Synths should be treated kindly. The Institute doesn't exactly tyrannize their Synths though, they make them work and perform jobs such as construction, janitorial work and other tasks. But considering they are living in the most pristine place in the Commonwealth, they are lucky. Despite this, a lot of Synths, even Coursers; go rogue. They claim they want freedom but when you approach them and ask why they want freedom - most of them say they do not know. This is due to them being simulacrums of Humans, they were designed to mimic our behavior, of course they have the potential to mimic that desire. 2. The Wasteland isn't ready for them Regardless, the Railroad have no qualms with taking these Synths and convincing them that life in the Wasteland is better. They give them dangerous or shitty jobs. Or some become Raiders. Even with the moral and ethical issues in play, there is also the fact that Synths do not age and they cannot sexually reproduce - eventually sooner or later, they will figure out they are Synths and have existential crisis or nervous breakdowns or others will find out they are Synths and try to destroy or exile them. They are simply not enough people around who are accepting of them. But the Railroad thinks it is ok to set them free. 3. Their Freedom is a lie Institute Synths usually fall into one of two categories. Those who have their memories untouched and remember the Institute fully and those who have been given engrams with detailed but fake lives. Synths that go rogue tend to find they cannot cope with either of those memories - but the Railroad is more than happy to commit the same crime the Institute does - by giving them new fake memories at the Memory Den in Goodneighbour. To make matters worse, this process sometimes kills the Synth. 4. The Railroad will destroy the Synths Future With the destruction of the Institute, the Railroad will destroy the Synths only known means of reproduction. Without the Institute's facility, the Synths will never be able to even at least mimic the growth of a culture or to create pre-fabricated family members. With no more Synths being made, the freedom of their very future will be taken away from them. 5. Synths are means to an end The whole purpose of the Gen 3 Synth is to act as a test bed in the direction of transferring Human consciousness into the Synth. The Institute's slogan is "Mankind - Redefined" and they mean this literally. They have concluded that the Human genepool is too small and too corrupt to be successfully propagated for a meaningful length of time. The only way for us to survive is to become Human 2.0. This line of thinking, is completely beyond both the Railroad and BoS's own visions.

“All those lives lost. For what? So a group of mad scientists can keep plundering the commonwealth to their hearts content?” Every single line from Nick is fantastic. He’s the best companion in the game. Also yeah even though you do see some immediate consequences(like the factions patrolling the wasteland & their presence in diamond city), I really wish there was more reaction to your decisions in the game. It’s really bizarre. NV & F4 have the same issue. Example: You took down Caesar & all you get is “unknown assailants” on the news. Anyway Bethesda should’ve put some ending slides in F4 to show the long-term consequences.

With the institute still functioning, is it possible that Synth Shaun will be altered over time to appear older? All the Synths that we see built in robotics appear to start out looking the same, and are altered to look different in the inaccessible "Processing" area, which is a bit silly, given that the institute essentially builds their Synths twice.

The story of losing your spouse and child then finding your child (synth) and then having them taken away (synth not real) then finding your child again (Father) only for them to be taken by away by time… what a tug on the heart for a real parent. @@MrMack49 Well creating more does not benefit humanity. Synths cannot produce children that’s a fact & The institute has terrorized the Commonwealth for a long time. Also it does cause paranoia(which is what we see in the game). So why add more to the difficult situation here? However The railroad want to show mercy to the Synths that are similar to humans(with emotions, memories, etc). The institute gives these machines human emotions and then make them slaves(which is what happens in blade runner)? That’s pretty messed up. So it’s cool that the railroad wants to give these people freedom. Obviously these machines aren’t human but we shouldn’t be cruel to them. Would you be cruel to Codsworth & Nick? Definitely not

I don’t even think Father reprogrammed Shaun for the Sole Survivor. I think he did it for himself. It’s like that one clip said: Synth Shaun is the closest thing to the son Nate and Nora would’ve had had the bombs not dropped. Even if the Sole Survivor was determined to have a relationship with Father, I don’t think Father really loved them as much as he wished he could have. He probably saw how desperate his parents were to save him and wishes he could feel that kind of love for them, too. Synth Shaun is his way of ensuring that some part of him gets to have the life he always wanted.

Interesting to see this. I only did the Institute ending once, in multiple playthroughs, simply couldn't stand it so never revisted it and I had forgotten some of the nuance - although I still couldn't do it. My very first playthrough when I had no clue what was going on I got into the Institute and promptly shot father as soon as I could, and irrespective of now knowing the story I still think that was a genuine reaction. Finding the fev lab and the pens where it looked like children (and cats?) were penned up, Swans story, the guy in good neighbor that the neighborhood watch deal with, Roger Warwick, and who knows how many other unecessary and cruel behaviours (both in the game and extrapolated) in subsequent gaming. It all simply confirmed my belief that Shaun is a sociapath (using his parent in an experiment that could have easily got him killed just cos he could?). Him and his institute are in no future of the commonwealth I would want to be a part of irrespective of the 3 minutes I had to bond with him as a baby. If thats the best hope for humanity we're doomed. I wonder if its because the institute are all descended from people with a penchant for science and tech. No humanities, no history or art. Never see what the kids in the Institute are taught in school - never actually see a schoolroom - but somehow I doubt ethics was a required course.

the one thing that gets me about every ending is the way, in his holotape, Shaun admits that Synth-Shaun is sentient and just about human. it's really sad. and every ending makes me cry. i haven't cried at the endings of a video game for a long time, but all four of fallout 4's endings make me cry because of both the death of the player character's son, as well as the way he felt about Synth-Shaun. personally, i think an ending where Shaun died before the final choice had to be made (whether to destroy the Institute or to destroy the Brotherhood/Railroad/Minutemen) and the player character's decisions decided the direction the Institute would go (including if the Institute would be allowed to continue existing at all) could have been interesting, especially if one of those options was to force the Institute to be opened up to the surface, and let synths choose if they wanted to stay in the Institute or not. with the way the game is, i choose to side with the Railroad and the Minutemen, but explore the Institute and the Brotherhood up until the breaking point. for me, the breaking point with the Brotherhood is when you have to choose whether or not to execute Danse, and, of course, the breaking point with the Institute is the Nuclear Option. there was a lot that the player character could have done to change the Institute by taking on the role of Director before Shaun died and/or Shaun's death occurs before the final decision on what the fate of the Institute will be. there is so much that could have been done to further complicate the decisions of loyalty in the endings to fallout 4, and adding in mixed ones alongside the four pretty clear ones is probably my favourite to explore/consider as both a player and a fanfiction writer.

Legendary effects are the perks those Legendary weapons or armor come with. Like giving you a plus to Intelligence or Perception or adding a percentage of more damage to a certain type of enemy like to super mutants or even just giving certain additional elemental damage like incendiary catching enemies on fire upon shooting or hitting them with it (if ranged or melee). Hope that helps.

Loved the video. You should do a video like the one I did where you wipe out everyone in the Institute and then leave the way you first came in. Then number of Institute synths you have to fight depends on how many you leave alive in the Institute. Get rid of everyone and you won't believe what's down in the bowels of the building!!! :) (I hope this didn't come up twice. The first one seems to have disappeared as I was editing it (or did they block me from commenting again because I mentioned one of my videos?))

I believe the experiment that was being conducted was one in the development of family bonds and ties... It was Shawn's last experiment. Although he will never see this result, it is his last major contribution to the Institute in the form of a possible change of philosophy. Mankind Redefined must mean the development and growth of the perspective and I believe this was the purpose for this.

There is two reasons to do an experiment. One, to find out if your hypothesis is correct or incorrect. Two, because you already know the outcome you just like seeing the result. Father's final experiment with synth Shaun is the second option. He already knows the outcome.

idk why everyone is like "you really sold out here bro" when you're literally the dictator of the institute who can just stop all of their dumb bullshit at anytime lmao. It'd actually be a pretty cool post game quest to deal with anyone trying to usurp you due to stuff you do when you take control of a faction post game, or allow the option for the player to just take over said faction in their ending. Turn the brotherhood into power armored raider sky pirates? Make the institute actually improve the surface? The railroad basically becoming the institute through running society in the background via subterfuge? Minutemen into NCR? so many possibilities here . Could probably just like mod it in actually, make it so that each controlled settlement gains a sort of special effect with the crossing of ending choice + karma direction

I'm genuinely surprised you did not include Mama Murphy's epilogue dialogue. She has something to say with her Sight on every faction's ending. She paints a fairly optimistic outcome for Institute's future. Not to mention that how Institute was up until now can be changed by your, new Director's, overrule. At worst you can dedicate Minutemen to Commonwealth's security without expending Institute's resources. They're all for it either way.

What a lot of people seem to miss due to it only being allowed by an installed Mod is the "Post-Game" play. The following post-game "ending" requires you siding with the Brotherhood to destroy the Institute: 1) If you've already completed the Nuka World DLC and wiped out all the Raider factions infesting it and occupied the Red Rocket there as a settlement, you can then send the child Shawn Synth there, with the intention that he now has a safe amusement park all to himself to play in to his heart's content for as long as he pleases, always creating new weapons Mods for you with the junk you bring him upon request. 2) Elder Maxon does a complete 180 with regards to the welfare of Commonwealth civilians, and dedicates the Brotherhood to cleaning out all remaining Synths, Raiders, and Super Mutants in the Commonwealth, making it a safe place to live again. Of interesting note is Maxon's attitude after he makes you his 2nd in command Sentinel, and you half-jokingly warn him that you're only a heartbeat away from being Elder now, and that he should watch his step from now on, to which he basically replies, "Oh, I will.". And, he does. These change the entire post-game dynamic, making the Brotherhood the best possible faction to join, with the only NPC pissed off at you being Dr. Li for destroying all of the Institute's irreplacable Science.

I still think the thing that makes most sense for the Institute's future plans revolves around the Player being an Institute experiment. Why the focus on FEV and tinkering with supermutants? Why not start it back up after Virgil leaves? Maybe they just finished the project. Because Shaun's gift to us is an FEV without the excesses, one that gives us all the cool advantages as we level up, but doesn't turn us into supermutants. This makes more sense as the better humanity (eugenics) than any plan to make synths be the new humanity. They're just robots, ie. tools. They are not the point of it all.
