Yeah, I've always heard that this piece was inspired by gamelan, and now I finally really get it

I got to play in a gamelan in University of Hawai'i way back in the early 1970s. We were not allowed to refer to written sheet music, as per their tradition. While the leader/teacher led us, he watched his 5year old son perfectly well. Debussy is my all-time fave composer in the Western classic tradition. After having lived almost 10 years in Asia, I can say I have been exposed to some remarkable sounds, spiritual paths and great Gurus.

This is my favorite Debussy piece, and to hear it on the closest western instrument to the gamelan adds a new layer of authenticity. Captures the far eastern vibe he was seeking.

Amazing, it uses the same tone scale as Gamelan, the traditional Indonesian music (especially tribes Java'nese, Bali'nese and Sunda'nese)

to think that debussy is inspired to making this score after watch bizarre traditional music from east & southeast asia, especially gamelan at exposition universelle 1889. thus make me realize if globalization can made such extravagant impact to lavish the quality of music and culture as well. at the hand of genius as debussy, we already see those proof it now.

Excellent ! Je suis sûr que Debussy aurait adoré cette interprétation qui donne à cette magnifique pièce un parfum encore plus exotique. Les coups de gong sont particulièrement bienvenus.

First time listening. Enchanted. Would love to know what's the name of the instruments, respectively. I read that this piece was inspired by gamelan, but the instruments look more like kulintang or balera (?). Also I wonder which gamelan (from which part of Indonesia) Debussy saw more than 130 years ago. I'm guessing it's the Javanese one but even the Javanese gamelan has its sub-category, so ...?
