Great video, Claudia and Heather! Very informative. You both bring up such good points. I'm in the U.S. and feel like we're in a similar situation over here as in the U.K. For me, so much trust has been lost with so many politicians over here, not really supporting a ceasefire or freedom for the Palestinian people. It's sad that that is happening so much. I really hope things will change soon, for the sake of the Palestinian people and everyone of us who is supporting them. But there's no way of knowing what those in power will actually do. And that's scary. Thank you to both of you for this wonderful discussion. I will probably come back to it again, because I found it very interesting. So thank you, Claudia and Heather. You both are lovely, admirable people. At least, in my opinion. So thank you

@@HeatherMendickLeft Exactly! It makes me wonder, for sure. Like this isn't what I (and I'm sure many others. Over here the majority of people support a ceasefire, etc. ) voted for. And if they're taking a position that they know a majority of people don't support, are they really representing us? It's depressing, definitely.

American Jew here. I've been called the equivalent of "race traitor" countless times by members of my own people for saying that genocide isn't okay just because we happen to share the ethnicity of the people committing it. Not all Jewish people (obviously) or even all Zionists do this kind of thing, but there is a disturbingly large contingent who do. I have a lot of friends (typically somewhat older) who post very one-sided things about the occupation on Facebook, and when I criticize or correct them in the comments, some friend of theirs I've never met will call me a "self-hating Jew". It's fucking infuriating.

Over Thanksgiving and winter break in particular, I watched my family have to deal with the nightmare of personal attacks and social ostracization at our shul as they tried to fight against the culture of excusing or supporting genocide. As it turns out, a lot of people agree with us, but are too afraid to say so publicly for fear of experiencing similar backlash. So you have people trying to get our synagogue to issue a condemnation of the city's resolution that genocide is bad, calling it violently anti-Semitic (?????), while lots of people in the synagogue agree with the resolution but can't speak up without risking their place within the community. It's sickening--so sickening, in fact, that I eventually had to step back from it due to my frustration at not being able to get personally involved in the conversation.

I think both of you are extremely brave to discuss this so openly and I am learning a lot from it. From having done a degree and a postgrad in history I am very aware at how violent movements tend to devour their own children. I was fortunate enough to go to the Prado in Madrid and see the original picture of Saturn devouring his own children by Goya. A brilliant and deeply disturbing work of art. In 1640's Britain when our witch craze was at its height the multitude turned against some of the chief witch hunters. In the Stalinist Purges two managers of those Purges - Yezhov and Berio met grizzly deaths. The French terror after the revolution only started to subside when Robspierre himself met his death. Not all these events were carbon copies of each other but they have certain broad similarities. As Mark Twain has said history does not repeat itself but sometimes it rhymes. It makes me wonder how this violent Anti-semitic smear campaign will conclude. And it is violent. Bullying is violent even if the aggressor never lays a finger on the victim. I am aware from being bullied at bording school how the bullies there sylized themselves as self righteous crusaders isolating me as a despicable figure beneath content. They managed I think to convince themselves that in being physically and psychologically and sexually violent to me they were somehow setting the world to rights. Tellingly those not involved did not help me much but ignored as best they could what was going on. My chief concern in a way is that events such as this anti semitism smear campaign will deter the really morally mature from going into politics and we really really need them there. Aristotle said that many people who wanted to be politicans were grossly unsuited for the job. Those who should be doing it would not want to do it but they should be made to!

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I've seen that Goya painting but had not connected it to how movements self destruct. I saw bullying dynamics like those you describe at places I worked. People were silent because they were fearful, even people who were being bullied I saw distance themselves from those of us who complained.

Well then really (as I believe Norman Finkelstein says) then anyone discriminated against because of their Middle Eastern race (ie, Arabs) should be counted as victims of anti-semitism! 😏 The word comes from the descendants of Shem, son of Noah in the OT. Covers lots of peoples.

AntiSemitism is hostilty to or fear of Jews for no reason other than they are Jews. That is the only definition we need. Even yours is too elaborate, while allowing the IHRA to control the discussion has handed Zionist smear campaigners ludicrous and unnecessary power.
